Does anyone suffer from dry eyes? I do. I have to put Systane gel lube in my eyes at night. That stuff is like $8 for a tiny tube!

That's supposed to be the best eyedrop/gel out there without a prescription, Shoobs. It's what I use for mother. There is a prescription product available. I think the name of it is Restasis. I don't know much about it, but if the Systane isn't doing the job, you might want to talk to your doctor about it. You might find it's covered by your insurance.

Shooby do you wear contacts? I ask b/c I used to have a lot of trouble with dry eyes and wearing my contacts. Someone suggested I change the contact lense cleaning solution to Clear Care. It gets the build up off the contacts and they are much more comfortable to wear.
My Dad has dry eyes. I know he uses something too. I think it is OTC.

I haven't had any experience with it, so I'm curious. As to the fish oil, it's improved, I understand. The capsules are not unpleasant to take, but they're pretty good sized (think horse capsule). I sure hope this helps. That's gotta feel pretty miserable.

Yeah, the are HUGE. Couldn't they make them half the size and just take 2? As for the restasis i think it takes some time for it to work.

LOL! I've often wondered why it's necessary to make a capsule the size of New Jersey, myself, shoobs! Potassium tablets for those who take Lasix come to mind! Heck, most of those patients are elderly and swallowing all the pills some have to take is hard enough. Why not take two small tablets/capsules? Boggles the mind, it does!

Maybe the companies that produce vitamins and other supplements are beginning to learn! Now, we can hope they pass on their knowledge to big pharma. I've gotten mother the chewable vitamins, as well. The ones she had been taken were just too darned big. I was worried about choking and aspiration. The chewables are far safer, I feel. I break her potassium in half, but the darned things are still too big. She's due for a new prescription the end of this month. I'm going to insist on two 20mg capsules, which are much smaller. Yeah, it adds yet another pill, but I think it will be safer.

Take the fish oil capsules with a meal. I take 4 a day. Hope it helps my dry eyes. It is the prescription for glaucoma that can make your eyelashes grow.

DH had dry eyes. He uses Refresh PM. otc.
The symptoms get worse when the air is dry. Do you have an a/c that dehumdifies? We try to keep winter humidity to 30 on our gauge.
He switched from fish oil to flax seed oil because of the finding that heart attacks increased with fish oil supplementation during some testing time period.
I now have a huge bottle of fish oil to finish up when I take only every other day.

Why can't they make a tube the size of a tube of ky jelly or something? I burn one of these tiny 10 tubes every 3 days.

Yikes. That is a lot. Maybe you could check on a website like CVS to see if they have a larger size. Or ask to pharmacist if there is a larger size or reasonably priced substitute. I think Refresh PM is in the $15 neighborhood but it takes just a dab to coat the eye. This link might help. www.earthclinic.com/CURES/dry-eyes-how-to-cure.html

DH said that using a clean, warm wash cloth to warm up the tear ducts and then massage them might help get them lubricating better.
He was flabbergasted this weekend because he usually has dry eyes but they were running like crying.

My eye Dr. told me to try using Refresh every hour for a couple of days in a row. He said many times that is enough to correct or at least help with the dry eyes. I did try it, and it helped some. I was also told that Restasis can take up to 3 months to work. I haven't bothered to pursue it.
Shooby, I'm interested in that tube stuff however. Do most pharmacies carry it?
OK, I looked it up online. I see there are drops and then a gel, along with one for nighttime. If I wake up at night, my eyes are so dry I can hardly get them open, let alone see. Daytime, it's not too bad, but still the discomfort is at times unbearable. I can't use fish oil as it causes heart palpitations and I already have an electrical problem in my heart that causes 2 different types of arrhythmia so I don't need help by adding fish oil.
So Shooby, what do you use during the day?

I found something very helpful that might work for the rest of you. It is call "Lacrisert". And it is a tiny, tiny sponge like thing that you put under your lower lid and you leave it in and it has time release methylcellulose. I put it in at bedtime and take it out in the morning. It seems to work very well. But, it is a prescription and you have to ask for it.
