I want my kids to see me acting in a moral way (and to emulate it), but I don't care if the rest of the world notices my "pureness of heart" or not. I follow the tenet "do unto others as you would have done to you" and it pretty much covers any kind of moral dilemma I would run into.

I think that morality starts with having wholesome thoughts towards others. In believing that we are all one with the source, no higher, no lower, no better, no worse, I realize that having negative thoughts toward another is like condemning your foot because it's ugly. However, even believing this, as I do, I am having a really hard time in this life learning the lesson of being tolerant and non-judgmental. Sometimes my foot just piss me off. Good morning lone. My foot bothers me lately too.

Nobody is ever always tolerant or non-judgmental, Lonewolf. It's something I struggle with on a daily basis. Not so much the non-judgmental part, but the tolerance part. There are just some people I can't (or maybe it's won't) tolerate and I'm not sure we should. For example, people who intentionally hurt others - especially children. I don't think we are meant to tolerate those people. As for judging them? Not my job. Don't be so hard on yourself.
And if your foot is pissing you off, go get a pedicure. It always makes me a lot happier with my feet!

I agree with Beer, as I was raised with the "do unto others" belief. Treating others with respect goes a long way, even if it's someone who works at a "lesser" job than you. I can't even count the number of times where I've been "paid back" by being nice to the company janitor, or cleaning lady, whether it is kindness returned, or sometimes they know something that you don't.

Morality is some code that a group of people get together and decide they can use to judge others. I have yet to find anyone whose moral code isn't full of contradictions, including myself.

Morality to me means if nobody sees you doing it - it never happened! I used to be part of the "Do unto others..." but then I saw what people are willing to have done to them and decided I'd go by my own interpretation of what that means. Don't steal Don't hurt with intention (but I still manage to hurt because of interpretations of others which I can't be responsible for how they look at life) Don't lie, steal or cheat, etc. And keep your clothes on unless you are hot! My eyes can only handle so much and I wouldn't do that to you!

I do word studies when questions come up so here goes with TMI:
Definitions of what we are discussing:
morality = moral quality, virtue
moral quality 1. of or dealing with right and wrong; 2. good virtuous; 3. giving sympathy but no active help.
virtue 1. moral excellence; 2. good quality especially a moral one; 3. chastity. ------------- So far, the definitions are unclear. The Authority steps up. (baseball analogy). -------------- Phl 4:8 Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just , whatsoever things [are] pure , whatsoever things [are] lovely , whatsoever things [are] of good report ; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise , think on these things. --------------- Virtues: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, bear with each other, forgive and love binds these.
From another source of study, these virtues can be used to counter sin when you are literally walking through or face to face with hell.
Sins - envy, sloth, gluttony, wrath, pride, lust, greed.

I find it interesting that as a society we seem condemn certain sins more than others. We go ape over sexual sins but we don't over gluttony or something like that. Why is that?

I find the list of sins interesting because pride is not listed first but envy is. Pride is what caused the fall. I won't type the name here.
My best guess is sexual sin includes more than one where I cannot limit this by saying person.
Gluttony is condemned with the worst being Bernie Madoff but that includes the worst sin which is theft. Theft deprives the other person of what is rightfully theirs and covers a lot of areas.
Just as the virtues are not just one definition, trait or action, the same holds for sin. The 10 Commandments which are really 12 Commandments are multi-level, also.
Morality is huge, broad subject that is difficult to define and carry out in a person's life. Society and cultural norms also come into play.
Phi 4:8 seems to be the best guide for me.
