What is he noted for?
After over 300 people had been condemned to death he is said to have personally checked off 38 of them to be executed, one of whom it turned out was on the list in error.
Does anyone know what it was all about?
How would such an act stack up today?

Krickett, you do in fact get a cookie. The other side. Is there another side? As a matter of fact there seems to be. Many a western novel and movie has played to the theme, which is about crooked Indian Agents and hungry Indians. Sadly, there is more Truth in the stories than there is fiction. For years before the Sioux uprising in Minnesota the Indian Trust Fund in Washington had been ransacked and misused. By law the Trust Fund monies were supposed to have been delivered to the Indians, but they were deemed too uneducated in the handling of money so, without the law ever having been changed, the Trust Fund money, (what there was left of it), was turned over to Indian Agents, who were supposed to spend it on the needs of the Indians. In that process even more money disappeared and the Indians were going hungry. It is also charged that in March when Lincoln took office the Congress was already out of session for the year and he had no way to raise money to go to war, so he further ransacked ever nook and cranny in Washington to get some. The Indian Trust Fund was just one source. Too, the Sioux had been promised over a million dollars to move off their long established native lands and onto reservations. That money was also never delivered to them. Finally the Sioux decided that there wasn't enough nutrition in the buffalo grass to sustain them and they set out to do what most people would do to feed their wives and children under the circumstances. They took it from their closest neighbors, the settlers. By peaceful means where possible, and by force where necessary. You are right about not learning that in the history classes of today. But it is common knowledge among the Sioux peoples. Another thing I bet you didn't know about (that is not in the history books) was that Lincoln issued an arrest warrant for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Seems what you talk about is the same "side" as the link that krickitt had on her message. So the "other side" would have to be one that painted the Indians as truly the bad guys. Not sure there are many willing to do that these days (it could be really tough to do so honestly anyway).

See: www.lewrockwell.com/orig2/adams3.htmlBelieve it didn't stop there, continued into modern times now on gas and oil leases, pasturing of cattle nothing paid and mining on their lands and other abuses....there finally was a final settling of a bill that while not giving doller for doller, not enough in the kitty for that but a $ 4 bullion deal workerd out by the government and tribes, ordered by the courts I believe to show it's a fact really happened the thefts, yet not passed by congress..surprised when the dems had control but really never going to happen now, yet there is a court decision on it so don't know ehere it stands now. Where is Lakhota when he's really needed.

I understand how the power of the presidency can be like alcohol and warp the senses. It seems Lincoln was addicted by it. I had read before that he was prone to make statements that would make people walk on eggshells to avoid his wrath. With that as background, is it any wonder that he is recorded to have made this comment regarding his authority under the Constitution?
......."As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, in time of war, I suppose I have a right to take any measure which may best subdue the enemy."........

desi, I believe what you are referring to may be found here. Just information on the "Settlement". The history of how just over a million dollars turned into several billion will require digging deeper: www.indiantrust.com/

I thought there was a hold up and figured with what is happening now, it would never get through for years..glad to see it was passed and done. I understand 1/2 or a good propoprtion, not sure of % will be put into trust for the benefit for the whole..over the years. I like that idea..hoping they , tribes get good advice , certain pople keep their hands out of the cookie jar, not what happens in Florida with the Indian Casino's I am afraid, and they have strong oversite and auditing procedures. It's a temptation. Any one caught possible Indian/Tribal law should prevail..thinking walking gauntlet and such..
