This thread explains so much. I'm beginning to have insight into the mindset of some, and understanding of how and why they possess that mindset. Another "wow" moment.

$163,000 wow...some side line and she would have gotten a pension on top of that too. Took six years to catch her..great auditing system they have there...almost $30,000 per year,,,unbelievable..wonder what she got ...probation? "She could face up to 15 years in state prison if convicted." Possible a bit more then that , considering the financial problems the city faces...

Anyone remember bookmobiles? We have one! Comes to our area on Wed. My dog ate part of a library book. Now I've got to go and explain and pay for it. ( red face)

fairly,
and they are the small minority of the population that doesn't have one or access to one. computers are one reason why libraries are going the way of the buggy whip. that and no funding. books are losing popularity as a medium as well.

I can only say, if you haven't been to a library for a while , go, and observe...to me , if businesses were getting that kind of traffic, they country would be in much better shape then it is now. Spread among all segments..poor, middle class, wealthy, all colors and nationalities, books and so much media...they are booming. That you don't use them, haven't been in years butt o comment on how little importance they are not the way to go...go experience this week, then come back and post. If slow , then talk to a librarian..might be surprised how wrong you are as far as popularity they are. If use of , popularity, isn't important for keeping them and public support of then I don't know what would be a reason for a service to be provided by the public sector.

( red face) The sad part of this pic.....I remember bookmobiles. ETA: Researching my county library system, it says they still operate a bookmobile...but I've never seen it in the 10+ years I've lived here. They did away with the bookmobile many years ago in my old home town. I guess I figured they went the way of the dinosaurs everywhere else as well.

I looked up the public library (only 1) in my old hometown....they take no fed funding what-so-ever. Local Government Revenue: $32,767 Rhode Island Government Revenue: $88,255 Federal Government Revenue: $0 Total Income: $533,354 Salaries: $314,611 Total Staff Expenditure: $392,798 The libraries in my current county (1 central, 25 branches) does receive fed funding...a whole 1.11% of operating expenses. Local Government Revenue: $32,767 Florida Government Revenue: $1,973,685 Federal Government Revenue: $164,695 Total Income: $32,201,635 Salaries: $12,002,630 Total Staff Expenditure: $14,824,840

I don't know that the Library of Alexandria was a public place where anyone could walk in off the street and walk out with the latest teen vampire romp in paper-back. I would guess that access to the library came with a fee that, at least, kept the business out of the red. I would, also guess, that access was only granted to a few. I am not saying that libraries are bad policy, just US public libraries. In today's information age, I would support a publicly funded preserve of information, that had one or two copies of every book, anywhere. I would even support digitizing all books that have past a certain time frame (like a patent period), so that access could had by internet on all written information possible. What I don't like is the general public walking in off the street, and walking out with the latest paperback or reading magazines or newspapers, on the tax-payer's dime. There is no reason, in the digital age we live in, that a building, and staff needs to be in every berg in the US. If you want the latest romance/mystery/teeny book buy it at the bookstore, on-line or through your digital reader. If you want it free, then trade with others. If you want to read the paper get on-line.

What the hell kind of books am I buying? Obviously not the type of trash that gets discarded on the curb, and rightly so. There are many types of libraries. For example, New York City's premier research library has copies of ancient manuscripts and original materials worth thousands. Scholars have access to them only within their walls and the people have to be vetted beforehand as vandalism, inconsiderate treatment of the material, etc. can destroy priceless manuscripts. So far as $100.00 texts, I can assure you this is the ballpark, so if you have a child in college, he or she may use a RESERVE library on campus to make sure that texts that will only be used once or twice a semester do not have to be purchased. Libraries are an invaluable resource for mankind, and the library of Alexandria which was burned in ancient times was a tragic loss that has never been recovered from. If your idea of a library is that it is a place to avoid paying 50 cents to read a newspaper, by all means stick to the internet or frequent the used books bin at books-a-million, but for many, that just won't cut it. Kid has had college texts cost close to $200.00 for ONE book.

I saw a local news report that told of a local school that uses kindles with all the needed books already loaded at a much reduced cost. ( To the chagrin of mass printers everywhere )

Kid has had college texts cost close to $200.00 for ONE book. The real slap in the face comes if/when they sell them back at the end of the semester....if the authors don't add enough words to warrant a new edition release making their 4 month old text worthless.

I think some folks are rather clueless as to the services a library provides. They are far more than portals, only, for borrowing books.

We have plenty of libraries here. One is right next door to work so I can go on by break. I miss the days when you were expected to be quiet so others could read and study. Now homeless camp out there from open to close and make the restrooms disgusting. Computers take up a lot of space and more people are using them and few are actually looking for books. People on cell phones sit and gab while at the computer so if you are really trying to read most times you can just forget about it.

Not ours..they put a little sitting area outside in the lobby, a couple of nice looking arm chairs , a table, sign designating area for and not in library, cell, for those who want to use cell phones... Also, in Fla so step out side , a couple of benches..no bums....also a security person, man or woman, think there was a little trouble, if so, not anymore.
