I think I discovered why my oatmeal tasted so gross...I accidentally grabbed the low sugar kind. I added some sugar to it this morning, and it was much better!

Creme cheese. Anything other then Philly taste strange and whenever I tried to bake with generic it never came out right. The store brand where I shop regularly has excellent cream cheese! I love it, and I can tell no difference between it and Philly brand.

Seems like most are combination of store/name brand. It always seems that no one who is asked ever buys store brand mayo or ketchup. Just wondering who buys them.
I was just recalling a few things I have found that we prefer store brand:
Pizza Pockets - I bought Walmart brand one time and my boys actually preferred them. I think they were less bready. Then they stopped selling them. Note that this preference was from teenage boys, and I can vouch that they are not the most discriminating eaters.
Dirty Rice Mix - I bought Winn Dixie brand trying to save money. DS loves it. Bought a name brand with a coupon and we really didn't like it, so now back to store brand. On this one I ate it and prefferred store brand.

We have to have: Skippy Peanut Butter (DH's favorite) Name Brand Salsa (but then we get the generic tortilla chips--if the salsa is good, you hardly taste the chips anyway)

Store brand frozen peas, spicy brown mustard, quick oats, tissues, washer fluid, diced tomatoes, canned corn, aluminum foil, cleanser, soap pads, sponges (am trying to remember what else store brand I can tolerate) are okay. Howerver the level below store brand, ya know ex. Home Basics... is something I can't deal with.

At one time I had put together a whole list of items that I wanted only certain brands...mayo, pace picante, chips and corn chips, skippy brand natural peanut butter, tuna, ketchup (hunts or Heinz) and ice cream. I do look for my preferred items on sale. Pretty much I don't care about store brand for most other items. Mustard really seems to be the same if it is generic or name brand and I've noticed little difference except price when it comes to frozen veggies. I try to be open to trying generic items and work out what works for me.

HEB's Hill Country Fare brand is my go-to brand for almost everything except cream cheese and tea bags---used to buy their tea bags, but they must've changed manufacturers because the tea tastes burnt now...so I went back to Lipton. HEB ketchup & mayo taste fine to me, and I'm a fairly picky eater. I highly recommend their store brands---the majority are quite good!

I can't think of anything I'm particularly brand loyal to. We don't buy much processed stuff, and when we do, it tends to be store brand from Whole Foods, Trader Joe's. Yes, some have not been to our taste, but when we find a store brand staple we like, we stick with it. Honestly the immediate store brand failure I can recall is quick cook oatmeal, the kind that comes in a tall canister. I love oatmeal but this was absolutely HORRIBLE. It turned to glue, could not salvage it at all, and tossed it out. Another store brand failure was canned whole tomatoes from a mainstream grocery store. Pretty bad, but it didn't bother me too badly, and it was a rare purchase to begin with.

There are a lot of Trader Joe creations that I love and will go out of my way for--but TJ brand pasta is just nasty! Barilla is my standby; De Cecco if I catch a good sale (or MIL is visiting). Totally agree on the need for name-brand cereal, ketchup, and cheese.

Anything that's going into a recipe (read: not being eaten by itself) is fine to be generic, including ketchup, although I agree that Heinz is better. The flavor of other things will cover it up if individual ingredients are off.
I eat Honey Nut Cheerios every morning, but I find "Mom's Best" brand to be the cheapest around, even cheaper than Malt-o-Meal and it tastes just fine. However, I'm flexible and look for deals often. A few weeks ago Fareway had a great deal on the huge boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios. I won't need to buy any more for a long time.
I also eat a lot of Triscuits. That has to be Nabisco. Mayonaise: has to be Hellmans.

I have no idea if this is true, but my grandma told me that for baking to always buy Domino sugar, because it was pure cane sugar. The generics and other brands don't specifically say "pure cane" and she said they were mostly beet sugar, which doesn't do as well for baking. So at any rate, if I'm baking I always buy Domino but keep a bag of cheaper generic for tea and such. The texture does seem distinctly different; Domino is more like small crystals where the generic is almost powdery. Does anyone have and input on this? Is this true? Or have I been buying the brand name for no reason for years?

My mom and grandmother always told me the same thing but it was in reference to jelly making - that the cane sugar set up better than the beet sugar. I do know that my local grocery's house brand sugar is labeled as cane sugar and I have successfully made jelly/jam with it before. I'm not sure why it would make a difference in baking. Interesting the information that gets handed down.

I've never really thought about the difference between cane sugar and beet sugar. My jellies never seemed to notice the difference but my memory could be faulty; it's been too long! Maybe this year I will get back to it. But the freight grocery store I go to always seems to have "baker's sugar". It's much finer than regular. I bought a bunch of it which we used for holiday baking at Christmas. I must say I was very pleased with the velvety texture of our cupcakes and cheesecakes. It just blends in so smoothly. I hope they always have some because I've certainly gotten spoiled with it. And, oh, the shortbread! I better close my mouth now!

In reply to the sugar question... Yes, most sugar that say just "sugar" on the package is made from sugar beets...which btw, is now a GMO (genetically modified) product. "Pure cane sugar" is still made from only sugar cane which has not, to this point, had it's genetics messed with!
I prefer to use "pure cane sugar" since I really don't want to put "modified" things in my system....not enough research as to how they will affect us long term...as well as not wanting to support Monsanto!
