I like shoes. I have what I call my 8 hour shoes that I pay a respectable dollar for. But for fashion statements that I don't wear for long, or don't do much walking in, often Wal Mart will have some very nice looking styles cheap. I get complimented on my footware often and never mention if the current pair are from Wal Mart.

I "stockpile" - to some extent - nonperishable food that we eat often.

Lately i have been trying to salvage clothes so I don't need to go buy anything new. (i'm also trying to loose weight so I don't want to shop for a bunch of sizes if i'm successful... so i've been altering clothes I have on hand.
My fiance ruined a pair of jeans over the holidays so i took them, added some scrap material I had on hand and made a cute skirt for me to wear from the parts that weren't all worn through.
I also had a dress that was stained on top, so i turned it into a skirt with an elastic band i happened to already have in my sewing kit.
So far I haven't bought any clothing items all year. I just keep going through my closet and trying to find ways to fix what I already have that I don't wear so i'll make it new and wear-able again.

Last fall I got a top at Dollar General. It looks nice and I got a ton of compliments on it. No one would ever know I got it there because no one I know buys clothes there. I have bought a few pieces of clothing at Walmart that I loved and that held up. I'm not the clothing snob I used to be. If it looks nice, fits well and washes up nicely and is budget friendly, I don't care where it comes from.

Hide from who? I live in a pretty nice neighborhood and I think most of my neighbors would be absolutely if they knew that I was a mega couponer/stockpiler.

I'm in Southern California... but my advice, since the clothes are already unusable in their current state, experiment. If anything you are only out some thread and time... but practice makes perfect. Even if you only get one or two wears out of a "creative item" because it disinigrated in the dryer... you learn from your mistakes. and You Tube and the internet are your crafting friends. lol

When I started at the Chicago Tribune, someone once complimented me on my shoes. "Those are nice! Where'd you get them?" Without thinking, I replied, "Kmart." Shocked silence. I don't know if that person ever attempted a conversation with me again. Snob.

OK, here's another one. I was at the Dollar Tree buying kosher salt and I saw a bin of hardback books. Yep, I admit it: I bought two of my 2010 Christmas gifts from the dollar store.

How about "don't bother advertising"? As for being a snob, have you seen the people of Walmart site? Being thought of as one of them is not going to help my professional image

Hide? Nothing. I am proud that I am frugal. If whom ever I am talking to has a problem with it, it's their own and not mine.

My DF's sister's in-laws are the cheapest people alive. Her MIL dyes her black pants black again when they start to fade, which makes us LOL!

Confession: I buy shoes from Payless Shoe Source.... mainly because I wear a women's size 12 (notoriously hard to find, trust me) and because I really like casual tennies and Keds and flats and they usually have a nice selection. I've also been known to buy casual clothes at Walmart ~ especially this last year since I was outgrowing clothes pretty quickly. (I lost about 115 pounds in 2010 and went through about 6 sizes.)

I thought it sounded like a pretty good idea I did that same thing once and got another 1+ years wear out of them and compliments too! I will also do a quick run thru the clothing and shoe departments at Wal-Mart and if I see something that suits my needs I buy it. I bought 2 casual lightweight jackets on their website for about $15 cheaper than I could find anywhere else and I love them. I could care less what the clothing snobs think...

Ambellamy, you don't by chance live near buffalo, NY where I could travel to you and learn how to do this sewing stuff, do you, lol? I went to UB before I transfered to UofR. Lots of family in Buffalo. Are you mature enough to remember Kobecker's department store? I worked there while in school.

Oh I wasn't suggesting you shouldn't dye your pants! If they were $100 Express pants I might too! It's just that it's the MIL that made us lol about it mostly. If you knew them you would too

It wasn't exactly hidden as much as just not advertised. When I was younger one of my favorite outfits came from the Dollar General Store. I had been looking at the expensive stuff in Speigel's catalog and there was a simple khaki and white striped shirt with a straight khaki skirt (I was thin back then) Anyhow I saw and bought an outfit at the dollar store that looked much like the Spiegel outfit for tons less money. I was a happy girl. ;D

I got a couple of pairs of slacks at family dollar last summer. The laundered very well and I plan on wearing them a long time.

Haven’t bought clothes at Walmart in a long time, BUT stopped in after work last night for one item and swung thru the clothing dept. $3 turtlenecks and $5 sweaters on the clearance rack. I stocked up and spent about $20. Wearing one of the turtlenecks at work today and I expect they'll last a couple of winters. When they're not suitable for public viewing, they become nightwear. Haven't bought PJ's in years.

Being thought of as one of them is not going to help my professional image Sometimes when I am in the grocery dept I have seen the guy mark the bread to be priced on mark down. Sure I will buy it, but I don't let my kids friends see the bag with 25 cents marked on it. Intellectually I understand that if I had bought it 1 hr before it would have been the exact same loaf of bread, but just cost 8 times a much. I just don't want my kids ridiculed about it by their friends. I also live in a pretty snooty neighborhood.

I don't really hide this one as I have been doing it soooooo long. I have been doing my banking for so long at one particular bank and teller we often would chat about things. One day I mentioned I needed to go to the office supply and buy paper clips, rubber bands ... she reached in her drawer and gave me a big hand full. The teller had told me they get so many from deposits that are paper clipped she had an abundant supply of them. I also use reuse envelopes from junk mail for my grocery/to do lists .. then if I have any coupons I just put them inside the envelopes so its all together now.

My mother always used old envelopes that way. I do it, too which is a little wierd as I've been given those magnetic shopping list thingies. What else are you going to use that return envelope for?

I buy a lot of my clothing from thrift stores. My favorite jacket is one I paid $7 for. I had to alter it a bit. Moved the sleeves up on the shoulders, added some darts, and changed the buttons. But I get compliments on it whenever I wear it.

It would never be a secret, but 98% of my clothes are from Wal-Mart, ShopKo(sale or clearanced), Fashion Bug (heavily discounted), Old Navy, or second hand. I laugh at the articles in magazines that show fashion on a budget....not my budget. I can often get a whole outfit for the cost of one budget top.

I found a fabulous resale shop. Most items are $1 or less, so guess where I've been getting my casual clothes from?! When you're doing your "Taxi Mom" gig, you're usually in jeans & casual tops anyway, so why not? They also get kid stuff, so it's been a great way to save on play clothes. I've been using the money I've saved to pay down debt. The cool part is, a lot of it is name brand stuff, so the snooty neighbors will never know.

I never mention where I get my clothes/shoes unless asked, but I wouldn't feel any embarrassment to say they were from Walmart. I remember my brother used to get a kick out of saying that when people asked about his awesome pair of boots.
I don't hide anything, most people don't bother asking. I never eat out for lunch at work, I never order soft drinks when eating out, I don't buy paper napkins for use at home (just don't use them). Those are things that are the hidden things that I do I guess.

I buy most of my clothes from Wal Mart or a store we have called Cato. They have very stylish clothes and everything I've bought has held up. I never pay alot for them, and they have clearance stuff all the time. I do have to pay money for my shoes because I have a bad foot. Clark's work best for me, but I can wear them for years, so I do get my money's worth out of them. Some one just asked me earlier today where I bought something (don't remember what it was now!) but before I blurted out where I got it, I remembered to say, you know, I just don't remember

I don't hide my 'tricks' I just don't share them with ppl who wouldn't be interested. It took me a very long time to learn that my business is not anyone else's business and when ppl ask rude questions I don't have to answer them. I have worked out a set of stock answers to questions I don't feel inclined to answer: 'Why do you ask?' 'I don't remember' or 'I wish I could remember' (LOL). One of the best laughs I ever had was when a coworker asked if my bag was a Coach when it came from Wal-Mart.
