I think some people handle living apart better than others. I worked away from home for awhile and was only home on weekends. That was doable, but only because I knew it was short term. For years my father worked the same way, but my mom said on Sunday nights we kids would cry and she would cry and then he would cry - so he did what he had to do to provide for his family by taking what work was available but eventually found a job that was closer and paid less but he thought it was worth it. My husband and I discussed how much we would be able to tolerate and as we have been together longer we can tolerate longer periods apart . Not that we don't like being together, but I guess in the grand scheme of a lifetime, a few years or months doesn't make a giant difference. We did decide however, that any job that required frequent travel would be limited to 2 weeks per month. You just have to decide together what is doable for you. And be ready to adjust if you have a plan and decide it isn't working.

I have a friend whose parents had this kind of deal. I don't know why the lived where they did, but the Dad's work was about 3 hours away. He was home on weekends.
I was not privy to what, if any, strain it put on relationships. He was high up in the company, so money wasn't an issue, which helps a lot.
I'd imagine you have to have some ground rules and some real boundaries that you both need to respect. For example: if he's just traveled to see you, don't greet him with a honey-do list. What happens if while he is "home", he wants to see one of his friends? You'll certainly have a lot of freedom maintaining separate residences. You'll get used to things being a certain way, and so will he. At the end, it may be like moving in together all over again. You probably need to be very open about your expectations/hopes as well.
It does sound like a good opportunity though.
