My boys have the tractor like in the OP. But holy crap, I didn't know it cost that much. I'm not sure I'd pay that. My stalker neighbor bought it for my older son when he was 2. Older son is going to be 11 and younger son is going to be 3. They both liked/like it, and it's held up very well, but it's not the easiest thing to peddle around. They tend to make a couple laps around the driveway pad (the rest of our drive is gravel) and then find something else to do that's less work! I agree with the Craigslist comment. We got younger son a motorized 4-wheeler for $40 and he uses that a lot more.

I don't have a problem with the price in theory, but I don't care for the powered cars.
For that kind of money, I think you could get something that is a little more sturdy, that will take longer to outgrow, that could be passed on to the next kid or your kid's kids, and/or that would promote active and imaginative play.
And then use the leftover cash to take your kids go-karting (although I think you have to be 4 for that). It is fun as heck to get to drive something when you are little, but it doesn't need to be a daily event.

I love the go cart idea, but unfortunately around here, the kids need to be much, much taller before they're big enough to go cart. Like 10 or 12. Bummer.

At 3 I got my son a motorized golf cart. It sat 1, had a rechargable battery and could drive on the concrete driveway or the lawn. Hours and hours and hours of fun for the boy. I paid $99 for it at Tuesday Morning and when he outgrew it I sold it for $45.

I bought DS one of those John Deere tractors at a garage sale for $25. He loves it. I see them occasionally on craigslist too.
We have a stable of the expensive Bruder trucks too - I buy them at home goods for half price.

Anne, yes, Bruder was the truck I paid $65 for. You know, they have two grades - one they sell in Home Goods - we got a firetruck there and a higher grade, the one that I got for $65 on Amazon - it was a HUGE garbage truck

We got my niece the Barbie Jeep for her 3rd birthday. It was her favorite thing ever. She loves that thing. She rides around in it all the time. That was 18 months ago and the battery's holding up fine.
My brother had a monster truck one and I had a four wheeler one. When we lived with my grandparents, my brother used to drive me down the driveway in it to meet my bus. He wasn't in school the first year and the second year his Head Start bus came later.

I will look on amazon. DS is obsessed with those trucks! The only problem is they take up so much space.

It says something about being a child exterminator... It's a Dalek... from Doctor Who. Since it's red, it's one of the newer Daleks. I like the old fashion kind that are bronze and black

With three boys, I'd go for it. Fighting will probably be somewhat of an issue, but hey, if they don't fight about that, they'd just fight about something else LOL.
The other issue is, if you spend that much on one boy's birthday, you will probably feel the need to spend a similar amount on the other boys' birthdays, as the baby gets older. Just sayin'.
My ex in-laws spent about that much over 20 years ago when the Lil Tykes car first became available here, for DS2's second birthday. My kids (and their friends, and in recent years, my younger friends' younger kids) got HOURS AND HOURS of fun out of that car. At some point DH replaced the plastic axles with metal ones.
Last spring we decided it was done, we wanted it OUT of the garden (we don't have a garage), so we put it out on the sidewalk. DS2 came home and pulled it back inside, saying, "I KNOW you left this outside by accident." He was 23, and finishing grad school! LOL.
Some toys are just "winners".
ETA: DH and I plan to try to get rid of it again this spring. We'll probably take a picture of it first though, to give to DS2. LOL.

Debt, your post made me think that I am going to go with the pedal one - I think it will last longer.....
We got a $100 turtle for my oldest when he turned 3 - that's what he wanted. We'll see what happens next yr when "baby' turns 3....

Lena I agree that the pedal one will probably last longer.
Maybe you could give an electric one to DS3 when the time comes?!

Yes. And no.
Yes because they are fun to play with. And I know my kids would play with it til it died.
No because we have no place for them to ride it. Front yard is too close to a busy road and back yard is a steep hill that ends in a creek. AND the biggest reason for no....is they would pile in it and try to drive to Nana's house.
If I had the money to get a fence for the yard...any part of the yard, we would have one or 3 in a heartbeat.

I was thinking about this last night again. I remember the little motorized cars when my kids were little (never got one), but would have definitely got a tractor thing if we saw one. It's just too late for my kids. My youngest is 6'4" and would probably break it. Guess we have to wait for grandkids.

The good news is that he won't outgrow this toy like you might think. He'll be able to enjoy it a second time around once he's a teenager and discovers booze and youtube.
