Oh hell no! I am majorly allergic to guinea pigs (talking asthma trigger here). If she needs to rely on a rodent for emotional support she's got bigger issues than the school should have to deal with. ETA - tried to read the story but the link didn't work for me

What annoys me, is that GVSU relented and told her she could have the guinea pig in her room. She didn't want to keep it there. She wanted to be able to take it to the dining hall and the common areas. GVSU settled in order to not have to fight it anymore. But now what happens when another student sues because they are allergic to guinea pigs?
The guinea pig "emotional support animal" has since died....I wonder if she got another one?

I wouldn't want to take it into the cafe. The staff there might be tempted to make a few cheap hamburgers out of it.

Link worked. Thanks.
What I find interestering is that she was told it was ok to keep in her dorm but she demanded the right to take the rodent everywhere. If she is that frail emotionally then she should not be in a live away college environment. If she can't cope now how the hell is she going to survive in the working world?
Just a selfish me, me, me money grab.

Anyone else have The Green Mile and "Mr. Jingles" pop into their heads while reading this?
Our school didn't allow pets AT ALL. Do you really need to push it even farther by expecting it to be allowed in the cafeteria?
Talk about a food safety violation.

Do you really need to push it even farther by expecting it to be allowed in the cafeteria? Talk about a food safety violation. From the second link it is defined as a service animal. As far as I know all service animals are allowed in restaurants and food safety rules don't apply. My son has a Dr who has a service dog to help her walk. The office occaisionally gets complaints from patients parents that their kids have athsma. This is a Dr's office that treats children and their response is that shehas to have her service dog with her.

It's probably crap like this that makes people not take mental illnesses seriously. If you can't eat a meal without your guinea pig you have way bigger problems that need your attention than how to be able to eat your meal with a guinea pig. Hell, I take mental illnesses seriously and my first thought reading that was "damn, you mean I coulda had a pet at college if I said I was depressed?". Does the guinea pig have to wear one of those vests that says service animals and walk on a leash?

Animals have been shown to have a very positive effect on the clinically depressed and mentally ill.

Aren't there rather strict definitions as to what exactly constitutes a service animal?
Otherwise I could take my lab with me everywhere and claim I have to because I am "depressed".
How on earth did she get that guinea pig a service animal label?

Beach, the guinea pig is not a recognized therapy animal.
Drama, she didn't get it labeld as an actual therapy animal. It is just what her and her therapist are calling it because it makes her feel better.

Well then she can't take it everywhere. I believe you have to have the animal licensed as a service animal in order ot take it anywhere you please. You can't just say your therapist said so neener neener.
Not a huge shocker though that it isn't licensed. I can imagine the look on the certifier's face as this chick walks in the door with her guinea pig.

It seems a there is no law about what type of animal it can be. From the ADA webite it seems the person with the disability doesn't even have to have the animal certified or have any paperwork to prove it is a service animal and not a pet. www.ada.gov/qasrvc.htm

Sweet, I am bringing my lab to work tomorrow and saying I can't live without her because I am depressed. That should go over well with my boss. Okay reading that description does Panda actually ride IN the car, like in the front seat/backseat? How do you fit a horse in your car?

www.ada.gov/qasrvc.htmThe laws on this aren't what most people would expect. The Fed doesn't allow for individual states to have laws that service animal must be "certified" type of thing. It really does read like the therapist really can say she needs this and if the animal is individually trained to help her it qualifies.

I really wouldn't want to be the person's room mate who shows up on the first day of school with a horse or monkey that is required to be allowed to share the room with us.

You would think so Thyme, but according to her and her lawyer, she has a right to campus housing.

::The laws on this aren't what most people would expect.::
I dunno, I think the laws are what a lot of people woudl expect these days. You have a disability if you say you have one, with no proof needed. And people are expected to make accomodations to your either actual or concocted disability without question, and without questioning whether the accomodations are actually disability related or just something you want to use your stated disability to help you get.
::It really does read like the therapist really can say she needs this and if the animal is individually trained to help her it qualifies.::
To me it sounds like she doesn't even need that, she just needs to make a claim that she is disabled and that it's a service animal and no one can require any kind of documentation of either.

They are about the size of a fairly large dog.

And yet another classic example of ADA out of control and being used for plain stupid reasons.
