I leave my kids alone, but I won't let them babysit the 4 year old next door. And I only leave them alone for an hour or two when there is nothing to be done - no homework, or meal or bedtime. But, they can watch TV or play video games while I go to the grocery store.

When G-DD came to visit us at age 14, on her return flight I was allowed to accompany her to the gate and stay with her until she boarded the plane. That is done for kids 16 and under so they don't have to navigate an airport alone.
Kids like to investiage things and will wander off unless supervised. They also have very selective hearing on important announcements, like flight information.
