Why are people so afraid of death when much better things await them afterwards?
Well depending on how you look at things that is. Let's face it the world is getting more grumpy and less tolerant. I'd rather be dead than live in this hell we call earth.
If you are well I'm not sure if it is muslim or whatever religion believes (not even sure on the amount) that at least 20 virgins await them in heaven.
If you're christian, you believe that there is a heaven and it's lovely everything you wanted.
If you are a true athiest you become part of the ground to feed and nourish plants.
(I'm not sure on agnostic or any other belief or non belief for that matter) I have agnostic friends, some believe in heaven and some believe like some of my athiest friends do that you just become part of the earth.
This isn't meant to offend. It's a simple question . . . why fear death? and partially a second question .. . what awaits you after death.
(for the mods, please feel free to move this where you want)

...yeah, this will likely end up a religious discussion... and fwiw, I don't fear death but I do fear (per se) not living... eta ...rats... I looked for a youtube about this Kevin Costner quote from Open Range... didn't find one... “There are things that gnaw at a man worse than dying,”

LOL I don't fear not living. If you ask me death is perferable. Although I am sure there will be a few people that will miss me, there will be many more who will throw a party over it. My death would make their life complete. I'm ok with that. I'd rather be dead than alive with the world turning the way it has turned.
Sadly death is not in the cards for me. So people will just have to put up with me making them miserable. Rather than trying to understand a person, people just want to hate lately.

Big fucking deal. Plants can kiss my ass. I don't want to be worm food just so some tree can have really healthy leaves one season.

It's not so much the passing over that causes concern. People fear the pain.
I talked with a man who was terminal with cancer and fearful. For him the pain was well controlled. He'd been struck by lightning and died on the operating table twice in his life. I just told him he'd done it before and was sent back to finish his appointments. Then he was concerned about the permanence.
All I could say was I had a strong faith in the after life.

Well, no matter how much faith you have, it is that, faith. And, isn't there a kernel of doubt in us all? What if what we believe is wrong? Or what if there is nothing. What if there is pain? I think we are all fearful deep down. We can mask it until it is truly staring us in the face.

Can we move THIS ONE to the religious area? Or merge it with the evil thread?

I was bleeding out, and everything was shutting down. Very painful, despite the morphine.

Yes I felt my liver and kidneys dying, to this day nothing I've had was like that. What happened? Why were you so sick? Lone I have a genetic Blood Disorder. My treatment is transfusions. If you have enough transfusions you become iron overloaded in your major organs. They didn't know, Lone we are the first going forward, everyone else died before us by their late teens. Basically it's hit and miss treatment. I got too iron overloaded and my system started shutting down. It happened twice in the last year in College and I was flattened for weeks, this was around Christmas 1989. In June 1990 I transferred to another hospital and that saved my life. Actually what saved me was one of my Mom's friends was a doctor and told me to transfer to another hospital. My skin was metal grey looking, my brother yelled at me for not washing.

If I die today the only thing I 'fear' is who will take care of my children now that my husband is gone?
Other than that, who cares? I will be dead.

That is a good point as well. I would fear for my kids. To be without a mom. I think that is really my underlying fear.

Hon it's my life and even with the crap it's still worth living. The greatest gift I received was life and for that I will always be thankful. Besides I do the treatments and the drugs it ain't too bad yanno. Meditation makes it all livable.

And, sometimes i think those things happen so other people can look at your life and see you dealing with those things and realize that maybe they need to rethink their own lives and maybe they are sweating the small stuff. But, did your brother feel bad afterwards when he found out?

Yes, good points. But why is it selfish to want long for and want to be with the ones you love? My mom is now under hospice care. And we have been down a long road the past year. I have talked to and called my mom DAILY almost my entire life. She is my best friend. And, now she cannot and that pains me that i have am slowly losing the one person in the world who is interested in how many tackles my son had or what songs dd is playing on her clarinet.

But, did your brother feel bad afterwards when he found out? He felt like complete shit and promptly went out and done a course on compassion. He was the one that got me into meditation not two years later after that. Best idea anyone put into my head.

I was badgering my son when he was little to eat better as he was a picky eater. And, i "made" him sit at the table or choose to eat something one day. And, it was a battle. It later turned out that he had celiac's disease and hadn't been feeling good and i felt terrible. And, when DH wasn't feeling good i was telling him he needed to get up off the couch, blah, blah and then we found out he had mono or some other kind of viral thing.
