7/31/13 $10,605 (1/1/13 $0 / Goal = $20,800)
I will have to save about $930 each paycheck to reach my goal. I don't think I am going to make it this year.

Update:
antevasin: 8/1/13 $1,785.41 (1/1/13 = $0; Goal = $25,000.00)
Total amount remaining to goal: $23,216.72
Total percentage saved: 7.13% Total percentage remaining: 92.87%
Decided to change the way I was allocating funds into my various savings channels and plugging most of my money into the higher yield interest account and decided to increase my savings goal overall.

Serious this time 8/4/13, $5,439 (6/15/13 $1,711, Goal $13,745) Still plodding along. My current thought is to get the car paid off with the weekly savings at year end. It'll be great to have the car paid off and will free up the biggest monthly amount I can free up, that I can then throw toward debt repayment.

Serious this time 8/17/13, $6,383 (6/15/13 $1,711, Goal $13,745) I think for 2014 I will add in my retirement and HSA goals for the year. It will seem like I'm making more progress... My dog has Addison's disease. She's had it for four years. It's expensive to treat but the treatment keeps her healthy (requires shots every 25 days). Earlier this year she went in for her dental and the vet found she was anemic. They x-rayed to see if they could find anything and found what seemed to be a large tumor, probably fast-growing, probably malignant and spreading. I didn't want anything more done, surgery is so hard on older dogs as I found when my other Lab had surgery to remove a small malignant tumor that was just in the skin. This surgery would be more invasive and probably just make her miserable at the end of her life. The vet and I talked about quality of life issues, and I sadly brought her home. When I brought her back for her next shot 25 days later, they were amazed to see she was still around. The vet thought it wouldn't be wise to update all her shots but we got the rabies done to keep her legal. Then with subsequent testing we found the anemia was stable (just below the low point of normal) so we did the rest of the shots (bordatella, etc.). At another blood test her anemia was still stable and the vet felt comfortable going through with the dental. She had a hard time afterward but with some pain meds and time she's just fine. I feel lucky to have gotten through all this without having to dip into the credit cards. Saving $120 every two weeks to keep my pup healthy is totally worth it. The total shown in the chart is what I've saved but the actual account balance right now is about $5. Talk about sinking funds... Two of my kids have birthdays in September. The gift account will take a hit. In October I can get back to the regular savings amounts for taxes, insurance, and gifts. Taxes are due Sept. 1, insurance due September 30, and I am sort of shuffling money around among the various accounts to be able to pay those bills when they come due. So in October, November, and December, I'll be saving more into gifts and less into insurance and taxes. Should have an adequate amount saved for Christmas. I don't have a vacation savings account set up, but I may have to set that up next year too.

CVCHS Music Boosters is helping out with covering all the music students Hawaii trip so the cost went down. Chart reflects discounted rate. LOVE the Boosters!!
There won't be much added this month as my car needs [1] tune up, [2] smogged, [3] DMV. That could be a grand so I've really restricted myself. Kids hating it but I really don't want to touch savings. Not with how everyone is eyeing the pension fund as a savings account. I have enough in savings to completely cover 1 year of expenses and at my age it would be hard to replace the loss in pension. If worse comes to worst, I still want to hold off on taking SSA until I am full retirement age. My eldest sis had to take it early [UIB ran out], and she will forever get 30% less. Not a situation I want to be in

Pension funds are not savings accounts, but 401(k)s are. That's what I was talking about tracking next year. I've got some pension coverage, will have SS, and now have a moderate 401(k) balance (hope it will increase significantly over the next 4 years) as well as some puny Roths. Hoping not to have to dip into any of it until I'm 66.
I just used my HSA savings to pay off some medical bills, still have a decent balance in the account. My insurance goes by calendar year and I have a deductible and for some reason it just happens that my medical appointments all happen in the first half of the year. So, I paid all those off, and am hoping I can skate through for the rest of the year.

Serious this time 8/30/13, $7,329 (6/15/13 $1,711, Goal $13,745)Savings goals are going a lot better than my debt race. Pretty sure I'm going to be using my 2013 weekly savings to finish paying off my car by year end. In October I will stop shifting money around in my various savings accounts to meet expenses as they are due (have been scrimping on gifts and other savings categories to boost insurance and taxes as they become due -- September is an expensive month!) and will get back to putting in a set amount into each account with every paycheck (except weekly savings, of course).

Serious, I didn't mean anyone here was viewing the pension account as a savings account, my concern is with what Detroit does & whether other government entities follow suit. So I'm going to be prepared to live off savings & brokerage account until I can draw full SSA
Sorry about the Addisons Disease. My sis has that
welcome back, twinmama!

So I'm going to be prepared to live off savings & brokerage account until I can draw full SSA Sorry about the Addisons Disease. My sis has that welcome back, twinmama! Gotcha. It seems that employers consider pensions a promise only if they want it to be when the time comes to pay it. More and more, employers seem to treat pensions as optional, and they treat money set aside in a defined benefit plan to be an ATM for the employer. Actually, my dog has been pretty stable with her Addison's treatment. It's just really expensive. I'm grateful I can afford it, and it's good for her that I'm devoted to her (as she is to me). I imagine some pet owners would euthanize rather than treat the pet, either because they can't afford it or don't want to spend the money. I can't tell you how many of my friends think I'm nuts. I do draw the line on some treatments, as I did when they told me about surgery to remove her tumor, but with injections and pills, it's a pretty easy (though expensive) call.

There is no way I am going to meet my goal this year with or without medical bills. I don't know where I went wrong but I will have to look it over.
