How do you think she's paying for her cigarettes? I'm buying the food stamps off of her.

Umm, sure. I can do that too. I didn't realize you had a problem in that area. <<POM runs before MM throws her used diaper at her>> Oops. Forget the

Nope. Fifty cents on the dollar is the going price, has been for many years.

Please stop. Get a debit card. They're so much easier, and safe. I don't care if you're 90 and think that the Eisenhower administration is after your mattress gold. They're not. Kthx. Alot of the "older" generation think debit cards are a means of keeping you in debit! And don't understand the concept of "debit" cards! Get over it!

That's a pretty broad paintbrush you're painting Seniors with, Crop. My late mother (in her mid-80's when she passed) had a debit card and she was not alone in her generation. Many of her friends also used them regularly when I took them on shopping trips, and that's just one teeny-tiny little speck of the "older generation". (BTW, she was also pretty savvy when it came to online shopping, banking, paying bills, as well as other computer use).

I will pay for my merchandise in whatever manner I choose. If I want to pay by bills, check, credit card, debit or a jar of pennies I will do so. So that was YOU in front of me yesterday!

Mind your own business or go get into another line. If paying by check, please balance your checkbook after you leave the checkout line-you have your store receipt. Also-don't take a call on your cell phone while still in line after you have written out your check and after you balanced your check book. Move along please. Others are waiting.

Also, don't have your adorable screaming running child take line time to swipe your debit card or your credit card. If there's a line behind you, save it for when there isn't one. Contrary to your belief, we don't think it's cute and neither does the cashier.

Equally unamusing are the folks who want their toddler to put items on the conveyor belt and "pay the cashier, like a good boy/girl." A toddler has no concept of paying anyone, let alone what money means, or why they should give up that box of animal crackers they've been chowing on for the last 30 minutes. As far as they are concerned, you are trying to take away a possession, and they will use that dreaded four-letter word at the top of their lungs when you do: "MINE! MINE! MINE!"
Oh, and no thanks to the poster who assumed those of us in the "older generation" don't understand English well enough to differentiate between "debt" and "debit." Not all of us are morons, out of touch or financially inept.

I'd rather be behind a check writer than a coupon queen. I'm a pretty unapologetic coupon user, and I make sure they are in plain sight to anyone that might get in line behind me.

I'd rather be behind a check writer than a scratch off ticket buyer who thinks it's ok to scratch off at the counter.

Why do I now have this incredible urge to write checks as slowly as possible every single time I buy groceries?

. Do you have to use all of them NOW?!
Why, yes, yes I do and thank you for asking.
BTW, loose change is very much what most cashiers need for their till, so don't be so hard on the change providers, please.

My DMIL does not have a debit card and will not get one. She still writes checks at the store. The last time I took her with me, the check would not scan and feed back through so the appropriate info would print on the back. The cashier tried to run it 5 times. She then called the front end manager who tried to run it another 3 times. DMIL was getting embarrassed. DFIL passed away only a month before and although she knew there was enough money there to cover the check, I cold see she was getting worried that something had happened to the account. Front end manager finally took her to the customer service desk for the shift manager to see if they could get the check to scan. By that time, I had asked DMIL if she minded if I stepped in. I pointed out to the shift manager that the check had torn slightly on one corner and maybe that was why it wouldn't feed back through. I asked DMIL if the bit of check was still in her checkbook. Sure enough if was. I asked the shift manager if she would please tape the corner (we are talking less than 3/8" of a corner and no printed info was missing) back to the check. She did and was amazed when the check ran through correctly. I agree that check writing can be a hassle but I don't agree that anyone should be made to use a payment method that makes them uneasy. Use the time to take a deep breathe and chill.

My 87 year old father pays everything he buys like groceries in cash, not by check. When my parents went to buy a television at Walmart, it rejected even though they knew they have enough money in the account. My parents don't have any credit cards, so my sister put it on hers and they wrote her a check.
When he pays his bills (they live in a small town), he drives around town and delivers them in person as much as possible.

A cash only basis would be a hassle in my opinion. At least around here, some places don't even like to take $50 bills and I'd be pulling a lot of cash out of the ATMs. That said, I'm not ready for the purchasing using my cell phone until it's been tested quite a bit more and security issues have been addressed in my opinion.

And Taxpro, I'm not saying it is or isn't for your father. More that your post got me thinking what it would be like to pay my bills in cash. A major pain in the butt to put it mildly.

You can pay all your utility bills at customer service at the grocery store now. Since there's usually a huge backup at CS, I'd hate to be waiting around to pay the bill.

If I couldn't pay bills online I'd still be using USPS.
