My mom is filling my brother's up this year with razor blades for his Mach 3. DH is getting some bacon novetly items, they compete at work to see who can find the weirdest stuff. Then I am putting a few naughty things in his stocking too. He'll also get some jolly ranchers and smarties. Don't know about Gwen's. I am debating filling it to the brim with Dum Dum suckers and candy necklaces. If I can ever find the darn things I am going to put some Little People in her stocking for her Disney Princess Singing Castle.

"They just want the big money item and that' s it." I think it was the way you said it. Had you said "the big ticket item is the one they get most excited over" people wouldn't have jumped to the conclusion that they seem entitled. Well, sorry. But, i would be much more excited and happy to get a Smartphone than a pack of socks or chapstick! Who wouldn't!! and what if all you could afford was a pack of socks?

Do none of you remember being a teenager? Did you get all excited about the socks when there was a video game sitting under the tree? Heaven forbid we are honest here.

Maybe we don't view the Holidays the same way. My kids know Santa is us. And, we are pretty low key. I just find it much easier to just find out what they want and buy it and be done with it. The gifts are great but not really the focus of the holidays. Doesn't mean they aren't "grateful". They are good, kind, loving kids. We just have a different way of celebrating that's all.

They do, but they really don't care about that stuff on Christmas. They just want the big money item and that' s it. I don't see the issue in this. Next year, I've already told the kids that we'll buy the new Wii System that just came out and they can each pick out a game. That's IT for christmas, with the exception of our kids each getting an ornament. Whatever santa brings will be VERY small. My oldest (8) is SUPER excited. He's also happy giving up 4-$30 gifts and one $150 dollar gift in order to get a Wii. We've never had a gaming system in the house. DS got a 3DS for Christmas last year. My kids aren't entitled, spoiled brats. They know Jesus is the reason for the season. And we donate plenty throughout the year. I imagine we'll do the same when it comes time for the kids to have their own computer, and when we have to get a cell phone plan. (I don't want to send my oldest to college with a prepaid cell). I also don't buy my kids clothes for Christmas. There were Christmases growing up at home where I only got the clothes I needed because that's all my folks could afford. Call me petty, but it sucked. Sure, I knew to be grateful as a tween that we had food on the table and our health, and that I was getting *something* to unwrap for Christmas. I want my kids to grow up knowing that it's not a special treat that we fulfill their basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter. And, while we are a polite household using our please and thank yous, I would NEVER expect my kids to say "Thanks mom, for doing what you are SUPPOSED to do, by providing for my basic needs. You are AWESOME," and continue to go on about it for about 10 minutes. all of my kids' gifts always came from Santa....and my kids don't get basic clothes for xmas - if they get clothes it's something above and beyond what I normally get them. my kids provide a list (and now that they're teens it's emailed to me and contains links to the gift) in order of importance....so they may get their top gift or they may get several of their further down gifts....but they've never complained.

This year we put a piece of posterboard on the wall, and hung a pen from a string next to it. If my kids think of anything they want for Christmas, they write it down. That has been so very, very helpful! My Mom called last night. My sister pulled out her phone and took a picture of the list. My MIL asked me to email her some suggestions. This will be a tradition for a while. And I know they will be happy!

I would go without so that my kids could have a few of their wants ONCE a year. Or I'd haul my butt to a charity to make sure my kid could get a toy or two. But, I have to say, even the poor folks I work with, even the most unstellar of parents manage to scrape up $10 to buy their kid a barbie for Christmas.

I try to follow this when getting gifts:
Something they want Something they need Something they wear and Something to read
Usually the "wear" is a new set of pajamas that they get Christmas Eve. Then the stocking is separate above and beyond.

Try amazon or target for the little peopleYeah, Target is on my list I've just been procrastinating. It's insane during the holidays. TRU has been sold out for the past month of the Disney Princess little people. That store has it's head up it's butt this year. I suppose I could give her Batman and the Joker I doubt she'd notice.

Ugh. Chet and I would go out on the 23rd to get all the stupid little junk for their stockings.
I guess I will have to just suck it up this year.
I want to just take down the tree and stay in til next year. 2012 is a horrible year.
Not sure when I will shop this year. Still haven't done it. That's what we were planning on doing on the 8th.
Funny how things happen. And it totally fucks you up. But then you still have to just do it.
Folks, just do what it is you do for your family. Get stupid shit they don't care about. Get only things they will care about. It doesn't really matter. In the end it doesn't even matter. Because in the end, you or they are gone. Just gone. And then all you will have left are the memories of finding that stupid shit. And how they looked at it. Everything ends as a memory. And so does everyone. Do what you want, how you want, and fuck what everyone else thinks. Because there will never be another 2012 Christmas. This is it. There is only one. Next year won't be 2012. So it's going to be different.
Just take pictures and video if you can. They will make the best memories.

I don't know where you live, but you could see if you live near a mattel store too. Actually, I thought about getting Wonder Woman and the invisible plane for my LO. I thought that was pretty cool.

As a young boy, my father wanted a pony. No way was my grandfather going to allow that to happen but he didn't say anything. As family lore goes, my father woke up on Christmas Day to find his stocking full of horse manure. My grandfather told him the pony must have run away after Santa delivered him.

We had a Mattel store years ago in the mall, long since closed. Pity because it was a pretty cool toy store. I've thought about Wonder Woman, technically she is an Amazonian Princess. *bleep* *bleep* You have GOT to be kidding me! All the Disney Princess Little People are sold out on the web site too!

The secret to a successful christmas on a tight budget is a good mix of those things you had to get them anyway (toothpaste, socks, underwear) mixed up with treats to eat and things they wanted - both in the stocking and under the tree. When getting the socks/underweat/toothpaste - I always tried to take it up a notch. special flavors of toothpaste, more expensive socks/underwear than I would usually buy. mixed in with the on big item, or a few moderate items - it gives that feeling of abundance that christmas is meant to be. yup....DD is getting an iPhone - that would look really pathetic under the tree so it's getting put in a big box and she's getting some smaller, inexpensive gifts to fill in. honestly, when I talk to people I know about what they're spending on their kids for xmas (and looking at the thread someone started) I'm on the way low end. Most people spend double or triple what I spend (and I don't think I'm cheap) and it floors me. Especially if they have little kids, which I think are a breeze to shop for - it's the teens that are a nightmare.

That's it. Batman and Wonder Woman are going to live in the Disney Castle. The magazines weren't kidding when they listed the castle as the hot toy of the year for Christmas. It does come with two little people, but I thought it'd be nice to have a few more. I started looking at the beginning of November for crying out loud.

Well, they got the Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone. So, if the tree looks "pathetic" oh well.

Stockings were always an important part of our Christmas morning tradition - though not the big ticket gift.
We always get an orange to round out the "toe" of the stocking and usually a handful of chocolates. When we were little, the "leg" was always a rolled up coloring book and a new pack of crayons.

I think anybody can come and visit the Disney Castle, doesn't have to be princessesWatch. Wonder Woman will be gone too. Stupid Little People, why did I think this was a good idea? Guess that is what happens as your kid gets old enough for the popular items. Good thing I grabbed the remote controlled Umi Car when I did.

The "orange" . Yeah, i gave up on that. Times have changed. I'm actually allergic to oranges and chocolates. My stocking is basically a time bomb waiting to give me hives. (but I like it)
