Actually I've found my kids are no more or less nasty than adults (once they're potty trained and whatnot anyway). So, if you really think about it, the company that's standing there judging the cleanliness of my house are disgusting and I should ask their germy asses to get out. Of course, I'm far too polite to ever do so.

My house isn't messy...it's free-range.

I didn't know you visited my aunt!! Seriously, you're describing her, her kids' age and her house to a T. I hate to take my kids there for gatherings because it's so dirty. I have to pack an extra set of clothes and change at my parents' house after we leave. I would say my house is average. It's usually clean but not necessarily tidy, if that makes sense. There isn't dirt, dust and pet hair everywhere. The dishes never pile up for more than a day. The floors get cleaned several times a week. But there are usually some toys strewn about and some mail piled up on the counter. There might be a laundry basket of clean clothes that needed folded and put away. Stuff like that.

I am totally embarrassed at our house. It's a disaster! My excuse is that I have a 16-month-old that I'm about to start calling Rogue because of how well he drains energy from even the most vibrant person. Anyone want to be my maid? I'm cheap but I'll feed you!

MidJD is right, everyone wants to be normal so we set our own idea of what's normal in our minds.

I'm pretty sure my house keeping skills are below average. Most people's houses that I go into are cleaner than mine. I mean, I don't have trash piled everywhere, but you can almost always find some crumbs on my kitchen counters, jelly or peanut butter blobs on the table, soap scum on the shower, dust on the TV, etc. That's pretty much how my apartment is. I'm not the best housekeeper but in my defense. 1. I work full time AND do graduate school. I don't want to spend what free time I have doing a bunch of chores. 2. It's only me that lives there, so I don't have to meet anyone else's standards. But I've seen far worse. I regularly take out the trash, do the dishes about once a week, clean the bathrooms every week or two, do laundry every Sunday ect. I'll pick up every few days too. But there are usually globs of stuff stuck on the counters, dust on the shelves, and coke cans lying around until I get around to picking them up ect. It works for me for now. If I wasn't in grad school or if I lived with someone else I'd be a bit more dilligent.

This time of year my biggest challenge with my house is that next to our house we have a pecan tree. The leaves fall down and are covered in sticky sap. And they stick to the bottom of everyone's shoes, and then you come inside, and they fall off the shoes, but are still sticky, so then they stick to your feet. It totally sucks, and it looks terrible to have leaves all over the house.
I know I should adopt the Canadian practice of removing your shoes when you come in the house - but I think that ship has sailed. We don't have a mud-room, or even any space by our door. It just isn't how we do things in this part of the country.

Shoes come off in the entryway. Our carpet would be disgusting if we didn't.

We live in the city. With the exception of the pecan leaves - we barely get some much as a piece of grass in our house. Our carpet is disgusting because our cats barf on it.

My priorities are getting the dishes done every other day (although I pile them in the sink until I get around to loading the dishwasher) and keeping up with the laundry. I'm also more picky about clutter type stuff (toys out in the living room, or piles of paper on the kitchen table) than I am about actual dirt (soap scum in the sink, crumbs on the floor). I do clean before I have visitors over though.

My house was cleaner when the kids were little and I worked full time. No one was in the house to make a mess. Now that I'm home with the kids after school - crap they make a mess!

All of you sound positively OCD to me compared to what I see at least three out of five days a week. When I retire, I'm going to write a book. Feel free to submit case histories for inclusion.
Lucky for my clients they can afford a cleaning lady.

Mm. We're very below average in neatness in this household- fortunately, we have similar low standards for a "clean" house. We're above average in laziness, but just a little bit extra laziness, not a lot. We're above average in intelligence, I'm below average in social skills, he's a bit above.
Well above average in libido, but we're newlyweds. Below average in lawn care. Above average in willingness to DIY. Above average in savings rate. Above average in net worth. Below average in modesty.
WAAAY above average in time spent on a computer. Well below average in time spent watching TV.
We'll have to make sure the floor is cleaner once we have a mobile offspring, and free of unpleasant or dangerous things to be put in the mouth of an undiscriminating child.

My house was cleaner when the kids were little and I worked full time. No one was in the house to make a mess. Now that I'm home with the kids after school - crap they make a mess! Yep. My SIL who is a SAHM with 5 kids (3 school age), is always marveling at how clean I keep my house. Well...we all pack up and are out by 6:30am and aren't back home until 5 at night. Unless the cat puked, the place looks exactly the same when we got back as when we left it. The two year old is tearing up the daycare ladies house all day and the older one is in school. We don't even mess the house up for breakfast. Everyone eats at work/school/daycare. I do a quick vacuum and a load of laundry every evening and turn on the dishwasher every night. If I have time I unload it in the morning. That's about the extent of our weekly housework.

Bathrooms and kitchen cooking surfaces should be clean. Period! I can have an inch of dust in the living room (and probably do right now ) but the toilets and sinks are clean and so is the kitchen. The shower stall is another story, but I am the only one who uses it so the only person who's going to be grossed out about the soap scum is me.

It just isn't how we do things in this part of the country. We have a six story fir tree in our front yard. The needles get EVERYWHERE. We remove shoes probably 75% of time and I sweep/vacuum 2-3x/week and they still get in the house. I try to use the leaf blower to clean the walkway/driveway every couple of weeks in the fall to stop the problem at the source.

Bathrooms and kitchen cooking surfaces should be clean. Period! I agree, but my house doesn't meet those standards at the moment.
