He escaped unscathed! A lot of worry for nothing, but at least he has a "pound sand" speech prepared We talked about the job situation before he left. He has more of an exit plan than I realized. Also apparently the texts he sends me while at work are just blowing off steam and I shouldn't take him so literally. I hope he has fun! He always comes back with good stories (his dad and all the other guys who are coming are from Hazard, KY). Gonna miss him, though. You rebel! Our office has frosted glass doors (3' and higher) for the same reason, though. The desks are arranged so that you can see everyone's legs at all times.

Good, I'm glad it's working out for him.
Just curious, what is the exit plan?

I'm pretty sure (like in the "collections" thread) that buried deep down somewhere in the pages and pages of tiny fine print, my employer as a whole has the right to rescind my vacation, and need only a vague enough reason like "mission critical" (as determined by them) to do so. I like my job and need the money.
As far as the individuals involved, I do work with very reasonable and kind people who would exhaust EVERY other possibility before rescinding vacation.
There isn't enough information to assume that MidJD's DH's boss is some cruel slavedriver with muttonchops and a top hat asking Bob Crachitt to work through Christmas or something. It does stink to be punished for being responsible and doing things like showing up for work on time and stuff!

Maybe she deleted the post, or edited it, but I swear, Mid had originally commented that the boss subjected her DH and his co-workers to verbal abuse on a regular basis, and that because of that environment, her DH was already considering leaving the position. I can't find that comment anymore (maybe it was on a different thread), but I think that's what we were all responding to when we were saying the boss sounded like a jerk- not because of the possibility he might ask her DH to skip vacation, but because he already acts like a jerk, even without that request.

I did edit that post - put a little too much out there. Sorry for the confusion. (His boss really is a jerk - but he wasn't yesterday! ) Captain, he has been putting out feelers with two of the local dealerships... he has a good working relationship since they ship a lot of parts/vehicles back and forth. He's going to go in and talk to the owners about openings when he gets back next week. He also told me that they are buying out another dealership (closer to our house) and that if the other leads don't pan out, he should be able to transfer so that he is no longer directly under his boss' supervision.

Mid: I'm glad your DH has an exit plan worked out that isn't just walking out one day, even if you could afford that.

I don't know, I guess it depends on the job and your relationship to your boss.
I'm of the opinion you should go the extra mile at your job and be a trooper when you need to be. That's your job, it's your duty.
However, I realize some employers do take advantage of good employees and you don't want to leave yourself open to be abused. In situations like this, use your best judgement based on the job and your DH's relationship with his boss.

Cool. As far as cancelling vacations, we get a lot of PTO at my employer. I get 17.33 hours per month ( I have no idea why the .33 is on there, but I'm glad we have it. That adds up to 5 weeks of vacation per year, plus seven holidays per year. That's 6 weeks off per year ! I have cancelled vacation days before to help out with the workload, but as far as deep-sixing a vacation that we've spent money on for airline tickets and hotels ( some want everything paid in advance, such as Disney World ), I would not do that. There are a ton of coders where I work, and either the work can be assigned to them in overtime, or it will wait for the week while I am happily vacationing elsewhere. I always let my managers know 3 or 4 months in advance when we have a big vacation planned. If I was going to be required to work instead of going on a trip we've paid $2k to $4k for, I'm at retirement age, and I would just have to retire. I still put in way more overtime than I really want just to try to keep things more current in the accounts receivable. They know I'm there for the department almost anytime.
