Horatio, how small were the trees when you planted them? Little sticks that will be called trees by your grandkids? A pecan tree is one of the few I can identify by sight.

I figured it had to be a pretty small tree to not be able to tell what was what. I'm glad your grandpa got some pecans out of his trees. Hopefully you'll get some out of yours.

I ordered 25 pecan trees.
Damn Horatio you must have a lot of land & LOVE pecans. We planted a pecan tree 3 or 4 years ago & it's just about the same height now as when we planted it. We have 3 mature pecan trees in our yard (1 is BIG) & I figured out by the 3rd year that they are more trouble than they are worth (to me anyway). There's always a mess from them plus we get way more pecans than we can use (like 50 lbs shelled). Pecan trees grow well here & the whole town is full of them. My guess is that I could charge to remove pecans from people's yards (they are everywhere). During pecan season you can't drive around town without running over them & I've seen them 2 inches thick on driveways. They are a pain (to me).

I want a flowering crabapple tree, but it's a little early to be thinking about trees here. Check back with me in at least 6 weeks...

I'll be cutting trees down soon, not planting for a while. It's ok though, my property is completely covered with trees, I need room for the house! I'm really going to miss my plum tree when I move. Mine can produce boxes and boxes full of huge plums on a good year. I don't think they'll grow on the mountain though

We planted a flowering crab and a cherry tree last year. Can't wait to see the crab blooming. It was all finished when we planted. I had 3 little cherries on the cherry tree last summer. Maybe I will get 5 this year?

I have a flowering crab and an ornamental pear tree (non-fruit producing) in the front of my house. Lovely little trees until we get those hideous Japanese beetles in the summer. I am guessing just a few more years of those infestations and the pear will have to go as they are slowly killing it anyway, aarrgggh!

I hate those damn beetles. I throw them in a can of paint thinner. It gives me a little satisfaction.

Since we've moved to our first home, we've planted a green apple, red apple, nectarine, red oak, tulip poplar, dogwood and washington hawthorn (1 of each). We have a pretty large yard and there were NO trees when we got here.
We made a donation to the arbor day foundation and they sent 9 little baby trees that we're not sure what to do with. I'd hate to just throw them away (planted the dogwood and washington hawthorn from that batch) but we just don't have room for 7 more trees!
Our nectarine tree was infested with Japanese beetles last year. I think we're going to try to put a net over it this year or something... It's really disgusting!
I want to do some evergreen screen behind our back fence, but I'm not sure what would get tall without too much girth... any suggestions?

TD2K truthfully during pecan season I hate the thought of even looking at them. We shell pecans for about 2 whole months. Even now I have 2 gallon bags of shelled pecans & we gave a LOT of them away (I gave my cousin (who bakes) 6 gallon bags of them. Of course we could have them all the time & the first year I would walk by them & just grab a handful to eat. Now the new has worn off & they are just a pain. Like I said pecans grow well here & they are everywhere. We have parks all along our rivers (3 of them meet here) & all of the parks are planted with pecan trees. Then we live in one of the older neighborhood & it's full of mature pecan trees. During pecan season I could walk around our neighborhood & pick up at least 20 or 30 lbs per day just out of the street. The best thing about pecan trees is watching the squirrels that live in them. Oh & something I don't understand. The local stores sell them for 7 to 9 dollars a bag here (& that's pecan pieces). I don't see how they can do that when they are everywhere for free.

Be very careful of fast growing trees. The wood of these trees are often soft and weak and easily break during thunderstorms and other severe weather. You pay a price for fast growing trees.

Tex - could your ship me some pecans?? I HATE paying the prices the stores charge because I know it's such a huge mark-up, and I bake with them a lot! # # And about the trees, we've got to really check into them. The wind's GREAT in the summer, but makes it hard to enjoy the backyard if it gets just slightly chilly. Thanks for the suggestions!

My understanding is they primarily come up from the ground after they "hatch", AND fly in from other areas. I may try this method this year, sounds kind of sci-fi but may be worth a shot: www.associatedcontent.com/article/27281/what_is_a_beneficial_nematode.html

Tex - could your ship me some pecans?? I HATE paying the prices the stores charge because I know it's such a huge mark-up, and I bake with them a lot! # # Rosegarden I got into shipping them the first harvest. I quickly found out that shipping pecans is something you don't want to do because of the weight. Shipping to my wife's family (who all wanted them) ended up costing me $90 not counting shipping some in shell pecans for my BIL who just wanted to see how hard they were to get out of the shell. (I loved his comment that it wasn't worth it without commenting on the fact that we had shelled all of the prior ones to him). All in all I think our pecan tree's cost me about $120 just that first year (on shipping). Now I give to family passing thru the area or that live close, etc. Oh & another by product of me shipping them was some people felt shorted while others gave to friends (which also caused problems). BTW pecans don't come every year. Last year (or you could say now because a few months back was when they drop) was a non pecan year. (they produce every other year). Our next crop comes in late September & October. Horatio, just thought of another thing about pecans. If you have trees over your house (like we do) when the wind blows it sound like hail on your roof when they fall. They can be loud!!!

Trees! This year, I've planted a Fuji apple, a weeping Santa Rosa plum, a pomegranate (technically a bush) and a satsuma mandarin (have a Kishu mandarin waiting to go in as well, but I have to pull out a shrub to make space for it and the green waste bin is already full). Oh, and a Comice pear, but I'm a little worried that we don't get enough chill here for it to be happy...guess we'll see. We don't have japanese beetles, but the birds are ridiculous here. I typically have to put ziploc baggies on the pears (have another pear that came with the house) if we want to eat any of them. They also terrorize the plum and apricot trees, and they devoured *all* of the peaches on our little dwarf peach tree last year It makes me so mad; they'll take 1-2 bites out of each fruit so they spoil the whole harvest and waste 90% of it. We'll be stocking up on netting this spring. Also had a codling moth infestation on the apple tree; I eventually gave up and sprayed it with Sevin.

LOL - I have the same issue with acorns from my mighty oak. It sounds like gunfire when they hit the garage roof. I still haven't found a good use for them short of getting a pig or two to graze on them. I hear they then render amazing meat. Pretty sure the city would take issue with that tho!

<<a weeping Santa Rosa plum>>
You may regret that, they are prolific and can make a real mess.
