They are like big iPods. Games, music, apps ;D Depending on the type of tablet, some are used just like a netbook and have Office software and such. To me they are a big toy . . . but I just saw the Surface (microsoft's tablet) and I think that will be the one for me. I love Apple, but I need Excel and Word, so I have not gotten myself an iPad.

I have a tablet and PC. I rarely use the PC. I am posting to you on a tablet.
PCs and lap top computers, in my opinion, are best used for work purposes (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) while tablets are best for lighter fare.
With tablets and Wi-Fi, you can use it anywhere. You no longer have to sit in front of a desk or other table to use it.

I now have two "tablets," I guess. One is the school-issued Ipad; the other is the Kindle Fire I bought last Christmas.
While you don't "have" to sit in front of a desk or other table, it's a lot more comfortable if you do. I took the Kindle Fire to the hospital with me and had to use my purse to keep it propped up for extended periods of time. It makes your hand ache to try to hold it.
I don't like either one of them in particular for PC purposes. I am not a texter, but a typist so hunt-and-peck is annoying for me. I only use my Ipad to check to see that assignments can be viewed through the Ipad (they all have one) since it doesn't have flash. I have watched movies and read books on both it and the Fire, but that's about it.
I really like my Fire better because I am using it for such limited purposes.

I have learned how to 'hunt and peck' pretty quickly over the past 18 months. I use the tablet for fun and the PC for 'work' type tasks. Plus I can sit outdoors in the sunshine to my heart's content pecking away.

DS likes to play some educational, and some not so educational, games on the ipad. I use logmein with my ipad so I can work on my desktop when we're at a park or something. I have a keyboard I bring with me. It's great for travel because it has games, movies, easy internet access. It's a lot more convenient than a laptop because you flip it open and everything is up and running.
I want the surface though - that thing looks awesome! It was pretty in my hands.

I have to admit that I'm something of a Luddite on these matters. I'm about as technologically savvy as an Amish cabinet-maker. I don't have wireless. I don't have an iphone and I don't have a phone plan. How would I stick internet in a tablet, and how would I pay for it? Would I have to buy a plan, like with a cell phone? Can I use the "pay as you go option?"

Can I use the "pay as you go option?" If you want to use the tablet at home, you can get a wireless router at someplace like Staples. I got one for about $50 that can be password protected so my neighbors can't piggyback on my internet. You connect your internet to it, and depending on the router and the size of your house, you should be able to access it wirelessly anywhere in the house. I'm only minimally technically competent, but I was able to set it all up by myself with no difficulty. If you want to use a tablet away from home, I think you need to have a separate internet plan for it. I don't have a smart phone, so I don't know what kind of data plans are available. Maybe there are some plans that also include mobile internet service for tablets. I have mobile broadband with a USB modem, which does not work with most tablets. There are a couple of tablets, though, that have USB ports and are also able to accommodate the drivers/software for the mobile broadband. I have a Dell Duo, which is actually a little netbook that is also a tablet when you flip the screen over and close the cover. It's bulkier and heavier than an iPad, but it accommodates the mobile broadband USB modem that I'm already paying for, so it was a reasonable compromise for me. I think there are some iPad plans that let you purchase mobile internet access only when you need it, but I don't really know anything about them other than hearing that they exist. You can also access public WiFi at places like Starbucks and some McDonald's (and, interestingly, hospitals), but they are not secure. Someone who actually knows what they're talking about will probably provide a better answer, but I wanted to offer my two cents' worth from the perspective of a relative technical moron since it is actually possible to use the cool gadgets without actually having to know what you're doing.

Depends upon the hospital and doctor's office as to whether or not they are secure. My orthopedic surgeon is, my rehab unit was. Hospital and ID doc was not.
In reality, free WiFi at the hospital kept me sane in the 5 hospitalizations that I had this past year, so it is really not strange that they provide access to patients.
Weltz......data plans can be as cheap as $15/mo, depending on the amount of data you want. I think it maxed out at $50/mo. I've actually considered getting the cheapest data plan, for the few times where I have not had Internet access and needed it (like when we were looking for a hotel late one night) while traveling.
Otherwise, I just use the routers at home, or public hotspots, like Starbucks.

I can see how it would be a real benefit for patients and for visitors as well.

We have an iPad, it's great for apps and photo/video viewing. As others have said, you can pick up free wi-fi almost anywhere - so no separate plan needed, especially if you also have wi-fi at home. I don't like typing on tablets, though - I type about 100wpm on a computer but can only type 30-40wpm on the iPad. We got the external keyboard and it helps a little, but by the time you set them both up on a table you may as well be using a laptop

Sounds like just another gadget to carry around. And, since I can type "for real", it I'm thinking I might as well stick with my laptop....

I've got the classic "Mom" purse. It's loaded with anything someone in my family might need. Scissors, 3 different types of pain killers, kleenix, a little candy...... I don't think I could make room for anything else.

Depends on the sect of the Amish. The Amish around me are of the Schwartzentruber sect and they are extremely conservative. They don't even have rubber on their buggy wheels.

If you have an android you can set it up as a wifi for your tablet so you only have to pay for one data plan.

Our iPad is an $800 video game player. We do get internet on it - so I use it for facebook and basic email, but I can't do any work on it.

Tablets are much more geared towards consuming content, rather than creating it. I have an android tablet which I use for videos, light internet browsing, and some e-mail/posting. I have a wireless keyboard I can use if I ever need to compose longer writings, but then if I'm going to carry that, I might as well just use the laptop.
Tablets (whether Android, iPad, or Windows) typically come as either Wi-Fi only, or with service. Depending on your provider you either add the device to your current plan, or you pay for a separate plan. My tablet is Wi-Fi only, and I am not able to tether since for some stupid reason, the ROM I flashed doesn't support ad-hoc networks.
They are getting more powerful and prices are coming down, so I expect to see some spectacular offerings in 2013. I want to get a touch enabled ultrabook at some point, but we'll see.

I'm glad you all brought this up. I've been toying with the idea of having a really splurgy Christmas and buying low-end tablets (nexus 7) for my parents and my sister's family.
Assuming the Droid version of FaceTime is easy enough for them to use, I think they would like it.

The Amish here do not have rubber on their buggy wheels either, but they do have all the iPhones and gadgets the English kids have. Eta: it really irks me that people have this idealized opinion of the Amish and their beliefs and are oblivious to the realities of their actual culture. Really swamp, how many Amish people do you have close contact with on a regular basis?

Every single day I pass their buggies on the road. Some are my clients for real estate purchase. I see them in the grocery store. I buy vegetables and fruit from them. I drive by several farms on my way to work and on my way to the in laws. An amish family wants to buy my in laws farm. When my grandmother died, we gave her stock of home canned meats and veggies to them.
Is that enough contact with them?

Wow, really? Ever consider that the Amish who live near you may not be identical to the Amish who live near Swamp? And what makes you think you know how much contact she has with them? The Amish around here also don't have rubber on their buggy wheels, and don't use electronics, although most will accept rides to town. They also drink and swear and gamble and sell delicious baked goods to the English. So it appears that different sects have different practices... who would've imagined?

You don't actually go to barn raisings, their homes, schools, auctions, their stores and your ancestors were not Amish? That's what I thought. Sure that makes you an expert. Fyi- Unless you have a close relationship with them, they won't share their gadgets, family photos, or their flight details of going to visit their shunned children.

okay folks, can we get back to talking about tablets please? I don't think the OP cares about which flavors of Amish culture can be found in different areas of the country.

Um, I said they're my clients. Ive been to their houses since its easier for me to go there. They're my in laws neighbors. We've chatted.
When I was a prosecutor, I worked with a young mom who was raped by her "English" neighbor. That's what they call us non Amish. I also worked with an Amish kid that was beat by her father.
The Schwartzentruber sect doesn't have gadgets. They're so strict they don't even put orange slow moving vehicle markers on their buggies.
I don't pretend to know what all Amish people live like. I know what the local Ones do.
