I am going to have to disagree about the dirt of NYC. The bags of stuff on the sidewalk was because it was trash day. They don't stay there every day. I also found people to be friendly and the cabs were clean. You just don't want to be out during rush hour. Wait to go out when everone is already at work. Also maybe eat lunch a little early or late, same with dinner.

And as far as the crime in NYC... I can only speak to my own experience, but in the 3 years I lived there I was not victimized once. I tend to feel safer in large groups... the only times I've had the creepy hair-on-end feeling have been when I was completely isolated, usually walking alone in a small town.
I for one enjoy the NY attitude. I hate having to make small talk CONSTANTLY everywhere I go. DH and I would always joke that in NY you could literally set yourself on fire and walk down the street and no one would give you a second glance ;D
And the crime per capita is incredibly low, when you consider there are more than 8 million people living in a tiny area.

I love NYC! And I don't find it dirtier or more dangerous than any other large city. Actually, I've never felt threatened or unsafe there.
I was actually grabbed and someone tried to take my backpack in Montreal, a supposedly very safe city.

NYC has to be a lot better than Atlanta. I saw a documentary on AMC and Atlanta was overrun with zombies.

First of all, to hoops and his 'documentary'! As for NYC, I visited there a few years ago with a female friend, and I was surprised at how safe I actually felt nearly all the time. It seemed cleaner than I'd expected and we never had a problem with anyone untoward. Granted, we stayed out of areas that really seemed like not a good plan. But in all the places we visited, we walked around feeling pretty comfortable.

DH and I walked from our hotel at Times Square down to the Meat Packing District to meet friends for dinner and never felt the least bit threatened or unsafe.
We took the subway back to the hotel at 11 and still didn't feel threatened.

"But so what - it's NYC - everyone should go a couple of times.... " I agree! Doxie, seriously, you come across as if you come from a royal family or something! Get over yourself. You have something negative to say about every place except for your tiny town. Guess what? You are a townie, not a royal princess... Can I just say that I totally dig you. Karma for you. I have limited emoticons at work, so you don't get the image, but your number just went up!

You should have posted back "Topics childless people need to MYOFB on" Ugh. I had a childless "friend" who always felt the need to give me parenting advice. I don't talk to her anymore for other reasons, but I so do not miss that about her.

The person Happyscooter describes seems more like a "negative nelly" than a know-it-all. Always downing anything someone else is doing, possibly there is more than a little jealousy at play. But it might not be rooted in jealousy - it just might be habit. In other words they may feel they are giving an appropriate positive response because that's how their internal scritp goes. They may not 100% realize that they are being seen as negative (or a Debbie Downer). Sometimes it's a good idea to ask the other person "What does that mean?" Or "why do you think that?"

"Why - are they so egotistical that they think most people are dumb and need their back seat guidance on everything - even places they haven't gone?" I think it is plain and simple jealousy. And none of us is there when the op actually brings up the subject of a trip or granite counters. There are usually three sides to the story, hers, hers and somewhere in there...the truth. I would ask, why do you care what someone else thinks about your personal choices? you don't need anyone's approval. I've posted before and Mid just did on the past page, about the age old game of "I can top that." Boring and usually indicative of someone who isn't confident or cool with themselves...just sayin'.

I don't know... Seems like the know it all in the op is spot on the mark. I have been to New York City. It is dirty. Also loud and the constant honking of horns could drive you bat shit crazy. Large cities do have higher crime. Really?? I was just in NYC & found it to be fairly clean considering the amount of people living there. The only dirty issue I saw was when trash is out for pickup & that was gross. I expected the subways to be disgusting, but found them to be pretty nice. I also was very surprised because I expected to constantly hear horns & did not. I am surprised thousands of pedestrians don't get killed every year & was terrified when I first got into a taxi because lane lines seem to be just suggestions. But, horns I didn't notice as a problem at all. ETA - frankly I thought NYC was absolutely awesome & if I could afford to live there I absolutely would. I was surprised that I liked it so much, before visiting I couldn't understand why anyone would want to live there. But, I totally see why some people think it is the best city in the world.

I can relate to this topic. But at my workplace it is "Yours isn't as bad as mine". Example - I mentioned I hadn't been feeling well because I had West Nile and a coworker didn't even acknowledge that I said anything and went on for 10 minutes about her aches and pains. Example - I mentioned my daughter had to have a bump behind her ear cut off and examined for cancer and a coworker thought that her son almost running out of gas was just awful.
Just silly stuff - but they actually say "but not as bad as mine" or "mine is worse". Really?
I just don't talk to those people if I can avoid it.

It might be rooted in jealousy - but generally I find with myself, and with other people, and soon as one person opens their mouth, other people feel the need to justify their own decisions.
Person 1: "I'm going to NYC." Person 2: "NYC Sucks" - but was thinking "I'm scared to go to NYC, or I can't afford to go to NYC, or even I don't want to go to NYC."
Person 1: "I'm getting granite" Person 2: "Granite sucks" - but why does it suck, beause person 2 wants it to suck so they don't have to get it, for whatever reason.
98% of what people say has to do with them, not with you. Except me...99.8% of what I say has to do with me.

NYC was a cesspool back in the 1970s in terms of dirty levels, compared to today. I was there late last year, and was actually pretty impressed with how good things looked. I thought the trains and subways looked great - clean and almost no graffiti, both the cars and the platforms.
And as for the noise, you need to remember the number and closeness of all the buildings increases the noise levels. The honking horns and other sounds just have more surface area to bounce off.
But I was born and raised there, so I'm also not that objective.
Oh, and Happyscooter probably knows my office manager...if you've done it/seen it/experienced it, she's done it bigger/better/suffered more/paid more/paid less/just plain been more excellent than you.

If NYC was the only place with crime, then I wouldn't have minded them saying it. But every weekend there is a shooting in the city 10 miles west of here. And a few years ago, someone went on a shooting rampage in the next state then crossed state lines into a city 10 miles east of here. Kind of weird to be in Pa. watching CNN and they are talking about the county you live in and someone had been caught that had gone on a shooting spree. NYC isn't the only place with crime and litter. Yes, I guess they are Debbie Downers. I heard someone tell a co-worker that she couldn't believe they were going on a cruise to Jamaica. Crime, poverty, trash, etc... Only if you are knowledgeable should you be allowed to speak.

When I went to China with my cousin, one evening we were sitting in the forward cabin (during the river cruise part of the trip) chatting. We were talking about calling home, and I looked at my watch and said "It is X time at home right now" and some random man interrupted to tell us I was wrong, it was really some other time at "home". Mind you, there were people from all over the US on our trip, and he didn't know which time zone we lived in. What an annoying idiot.

If they stay up late, how do you get them up in the morning? Anything past 8:45 and my daughter is terrible to get out of bed. They are homeschooled and can get up whenever they want. Does that work for you? DD pretty much will wake up at 6:30 regardless of when she was put to bed. So if I put her to bed too late, she will wake up normal time & be a terror most of the day. I don't think there is anything wrong with a late bedtime if that is what the kids are used to. The problem with mine comes when the bedtime is irregular. They function better on a schedule.

Seriously? Are we really questioning if this works for wrongside? If it was a problem, she would likely fix it - not brag about it. Obviously it DOES work for her. Obviously she DOES think that her kids get enough sleep. Obviously mornings are NOT a problem. Hilarious that you would ask such silly questions on a thread that was designed to criticize people who think they know everything.
