I think a garlic press can be pretty useless, a good sharp paring knife to mince it and you end up with much better results and less mess.

I threw my ice cream scoop away, hoping that making it harder to dig the stuff out would make me eat less of it. Hasn't worked. I just bend our regular spoons now. Use a fork and eat straight out of the carton. Stick the ice cream container in the microwave for 15 seconds, then scoop. No bent spoons!

Depends on the garlic press, and what you are doing with the garlic...

If you just eat the whole container of ice cream then future ice crystals aren't a problem...
I love my Pampered Chef garlic press too... but i don't always press, depends on what I want to do with it...

This was the only "gadget" my mom ever had, and she was the best cook on earth.

I was thinking about buying a third, small crock pot. I have a large one with a digital timer that once it counts down it automatically switches to the "warm" setting. That really helps to not have dried out meat at the end of the work day. I have a medium size crock pot with a locking lid for travel. But I was thinking about getting an even smaller crock pot for things like dips. I would also like a mandolin. A saw a very good brand-name crock pot on sale the other week. Regularly $59.99 for $6. Maybe I should have bought it. I just have no room for storage.

I vote for the blender and the waffle maker. I don't use either one, but when they do get used in my house, guess who gets to clean them up and put them away.

One thing that I don't use a lot but am still glad I have is my Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer. I cook more than I bake, and I don't use it often, but when I need it, I'm so glad it's there.

KA (Kitchen Aid) mixer utterly rocks! Mine is over 20 years old. I want a new one in a cool color, but this one (in white) refuses to quit working.

Ok, I don't have one of these, but we did growing up... The Presto Hot Dogger! Basically it was a home electrocution set for hot dogs... they were terrible. This stupid thing became the family joke (and still is to this day). OMG- We have one of those. We found it when cleaning out DH's grandparents house. He kept it and says he wants to see if it still works. I told him I wanted to upgrade our insurance first.

We cook probably 98% of our meals at home now so our crock pot, Vitamix, juicer (a new Hurom, it's awesome!), toaster oven, food processor and KitchenAid mixer get daily and/or weekly workouts. But if they sit unused and collect dust, I can understand why people think they're useless.

Banana cutter, avocado pitter (or whatever it is called), any kind of peeler (potato, apple, carrot, etc). I wouldn't say useless but totally unnecessary.

My favourite "gadget" is my $60 Swiss Army Victorinox butcher knife. That puppy will slice, chop, filet, mince and cut anything, effortlessly. I just had it sharpened today.

My DH loves kitchen gadgets, but he doesn't cook. He wants to buy everything in specialty kitchen stores and on infomercials.
The last time I went out of town, I returned to find my kitchen floor covered with the contents of my cupboards. Useless things like pots and pans were placed on the floor to make room for incredibly useful things like salad spinners.
I cook 6 days a week.
DH nearly lost his life.

I almost caved in and bought the one from QVC when it was a Today Special Value @ $379 I think. The guy put in oranges and apples etc. with whole or cut in half with the skins still on....WOW was all I could say. I love smoothies, and would drink even more if I had a way to toss in old greens, lettuce, celery, tomatoes etc.

I love smoothies, and would drink even more if I had a way to toss in old greens, lettuce, celery, tomatoes etc. Well all I can tell you is that I've had it for almost 10 years and I still love it. The sales "hype" about it pulverizing whole fruits and vegetables is actually true - it will make almost anything into a creamy smoothie texture; if you want to keep going, leave it on for 4 minutes and you will have a warm soup (great for leftover veges). If you want "true" juice (no pulp) you will need to get a juicer - but for fruit and/or vegetable smoothies, soups, sauces, dressings, blended drinks, nut milks, popsicle mixes, marinades, puddings, grinding bread into fresh crumbs or grinding grains it's great. Made in the Vitamix - "A Glass of Sunshine": half an apple; half a lemon (or two tablespoons of lemon juice); 1/2 inch piece of peeled fresh ginger; 1/2 peeled cucumber and as many greens (celery, spinach, kate, lettuce, parsley, cilantro, whatever you personally like) as you need to stuff in there to make whatever size glass you're using. Add ice if you want. Made in the Vitamix - "Green Goblin Pops": one small fresh pineapple, peeled, cored and cubed; 2-3 small bananas; one bag of fresh baby spinach. Whir until smooth, pour into popsicle molds and freeze. Yeah, you need one! ETA: if you have a Costco near you, they have them on "road show" every once in a while (that is, if you can stand to wait), and they'll be cheaper than QVC.

I love my mandolin, but definitely use the guard. I'm a tad, uh, graceful so I need it! The joke is that the secret ingredient to my mac and cheese is blood because I always get myself with my shredder. I've been wanting a microplane! I have two food processors. I have an 8-cup one that was a hand-me-down from a friend. It works perfectly well, but DF knew I wanted a new one so he bought me a 3-cup one for Christmas. I love the new one, but I can't get rid of the old because I do make dishes that require the bigger bowl. DF bought me a molcajete years ago that I use to make guacamole. I definitely use the tejolote most. It came with a totally useless avocado scraper. A spoon works just as well. My most often used gadget is probably my muddler. Couldn't make a caipirinha without one!

I bought a microplane about 2 yrs ago, but haven't used it yet. I don't really use zest of anything. Any other uses? I bought it from a co-worker who was selling stuff out of a book for her kid's school.
What I don't have is a toaster oven. Never did. I do think I want one though. People either love them or hate them.

That's the worst thing about my Thermomix: I can no longer even pretend to justify either a VitaMix or a KitchenAid. I'm kicking around the idea of a meat grinder; DH will only eat ground sirloin for hamburger-type stuff and for some bizarre reason top sirloin goes on sale regularly for better prices than you ever see for ground sirloin.

What I don't have is a toaster oven. Never did. I do think I want one though. People either love them or hate them. DH grew up with toaster ovens and I never owned one until DH and I moved in together. We were given one as a present 10+ years ago that we used until we purchased a new one last year in an attempt to downsize appliances from 2 to 1 (toaster and toaster oven to just a toaster oven with a toaster feature). About our current toaster oven, we currently don't like the smallness of it. It's a combo toaster and toaster oven. The oven part isn't as big as were used to. (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Hamilton-Beach-Toastation-2-in-1-2-Slice-Toaster-Oven-Red-22703/14711169 in black and I thought we only paid about $20, not $40 .) We've talked about getting a new one that's bigger, but just haven't done it yet. Either way, we love having a toaster oven! Edited to make it easier to understand.
