I want a gas stove and an electric oven...the open flame broilers on gas ovens are just asking for trouble when it comes to me. pretty sure my gas oven doesn't have an open flame broiler. I grew up with a gas oven with an open flame broiler that we had to light with a match. we all managed to survive.

We were going to do a quartz counter top, but I backed out at the last minute, and did laminate. People don't seem to realize it is not granite. My brother is looking at quartz counter tops, and asked me this weekend if it was the newer high resolution vinyl. As far as I know, it is regular laminate. Cocoa, quartz isn't laminate, but it's not granite, either. We got quartz and it's been great. Here's why I like it: - Almost indestructible. - Doesn't stain since it's impervious; leave red wine, tea, curry, anything on it as long as you want and it just wipes away - Also, since it's impervious, it doesn't harbor mold or germs. You can wipe them away and clean easily like glass. - Can put hot pots directly on it, no scorching. - Doesn't scratch. - Very interesting colors available. - Green. Since it's made from stone chips (readily available), color and hard resin, it's very renewable and doesn't require the destruction of large mountains plus associated waste that granite does. On the downside, it's very expensive and IMHO it does not look like a natural product, so you have to be OK with it being a manufactured pattern.

I guess my ex's was an older model, I went to put something in the broiler and saw the flames on top and decided to cook the meal another way. The one in Rachel Ray's shows had it to, so I just figured that's how they all were.

Is Robert Redford one of them?
Count me in among those who believe that HGTV has skewed peoples expectations of "basic". I know its a regional thing, but around here you definitely see people expecting stainless/granite/hardwood.

I think some of it is a function of our recent housing crisis. People who stretched to buy their homes couldn't afford all of the upgrades, so they got a fancy house with contractor grade insides. In some cases that was smart - if you have limited resources, better to invest in the brick exterior or other major construction costs that will be with the house permanently. Then you can save up to upgrade the kitchen in 10 years. Or you buy a top of the line kitchen from the get go and you still need to replace it in 15-20 years, but the bones of your house aren't as good. (And in other cases, people were just plain over-extending themselves) This. Kitchens can and will probably need to be replaced later. It is better to spend money on things that can't easily be done later. I like cooking with electric. I tried cooking with gas for 18 long months, before we all admitted, it wasn't for me. I am a messy cook and prefer the smooth top. I was also burning myself constantly.

Because of the tenant damage we've decided to go ahead with remodeling the kitchen. Our old cabinets are probably the 50 year old builder's cabinets that came with the house. Put in my order for cherry cabinets on Friday for $13k. I'm waiting for a bid for new countertops to replace the 20+ year old laminate countertop that my tenant scorched in one place and scrubbed with soft scrub down to the backing. It's a fair amount of countertop + a peninsula and island. Bid for granite was 5k and quartz another 10%. I'm currently waiting to hear back on the bid for Corian. My guess is that the Corian will come in around 3k and if so, I'll go that route. I want to keep the countertop a nice neutral off-white as to not sidtract from our view. I can't see a reason to pay to pay 50+% more for off white quartz or granite.

Corian will scorch and scratch if that is an issue for you. We have granite and it does not scratch easy at all and wine spills can sit for a very long time now. They professionally seal it (15 year warranty) these days. I can also set scalding hot pots and pans on it with no problems at all. We've had ours for about 6 years now in the kitchen and 7 years in the bathrooms and have had no issues with scratches or stains, etc. And it's just gorgeous and very easy to clean.
kgb - I hope you find a house that is well built and I wouldn't worry about the smaller things inside as they can be replaced. I highly recommend you hire an inspector before you sign a contract when you do find it. You'll find the right house but I know it takes a lot of time and frustration and disappointment. We are so picky it took us 10 years to find "the one" for us and we had to have it built. But we've never been happier.

The Corian island survived the tenants just fine. I'm told that it also can be refinished which could be an option when it's time to sell. Since moving back, DH stained the granite. Not super noticable but we notice it. My kitchen designer says even the sealed granite will stain with certain substances. We need countertops for a real working kitchen, not something pretty to look at and we're afraid to use! We'll just wait to see what the bid comes in at.

I'm also amazed at the number of houses that have gas heat and an electric stove. Now that's not a big deal. We'll just put in a new stove. But don't these people cook a lot? I HATE electric stoves. That would be our house. I hate gas stoves. I hate the gas hot water heater too. My uncle fried his eyebrows off and all the hair on his arms trying to light the thing when we moved into this house. Not sure if it was an issue because the gas and heater had been off for two years or if that is normal, but it has made me afraid of the stupid thing. We call it the fire breathing monster in the basement.

WWBG- Nope, no Robert Redford. But Sandra Bullock was the neighbor of one of my clients and I saw her taking out the trash and walking her dog once. Does that count?

Hey, I like to roast things over a fire as much as the next girl, but possums are just greasy and nasty. Find some better road kill and we'll join your picnic.

Aren't you supposed to parboil possums or something because of the gamy flavor?

Thanks. We plan on taking our time. DH's uncle is a contractor and my dad has a lot of construction and home building knowledge. They came and looked at our current house before we made an offer. Everything turned out fine, but we will probably get a professional inspection this time.
I'm not worried about small things. DH and my dad are very handy. But kitchens can get into big time $$, and I'm not paying top dollar (for our region) for a house with a kitchen I find unacceptable.
We're also considering maybe building new.
