I'm a teacher, and we have a pretty casual dress code. No jeans except on Fridays. You have to wear a "spirit" shirt, which can be a school shirt or just a shirt in the school colors. Everyone, including the principals (we have six or seven) wear jeans on Friday.
The rest of the time you wear "nice" slacks and a shirt without a slogan. If you dress up too much, everyone wants to know where you are interviewing. We have a dress code for the kids, and we are expected to respect that (no piercings except for female's ears, etc.) Almost no one wears a dress; it's not work appropriate. Teaching is more physical than most people recognize.
I've always argued that you can usually tell the real professionals because they don't overdress. Lawyers, bankers, and accountants are exceptions. But many professionals wear lab coats, etc. If they are going to be around construction, they wear jeans. Professional is what you are, not your style mantra.

I know our high school is business casual, however on Fridays, the staff can wear nice jeans provided they pay a dollar. the money goes to a different charity each month

There shouldn't be a problem with a basic, common sense dress code. Getting everyone to comply, on the other hand....
My last employer, there was no cleavage allowed (chest or butt--don't ask why they had to put THAT ONE in writing), skirts had to be a certain length, your underwear could not be visible above or below your clothes (none of those "falling off your butt pants for the guys), closed toe shoes were required (more for safety purposes, than for fashion), stockings were required, men had to wear ties, etc. It just needs to be spelled out what is tolerated, and made clear what will not be tolerated. It also included the number of acceptable piercings. If you had a pierced nose, you had to leave your "nose jewelry" at home. It also limited the number of ear piercings. There was a certain image they wished to project....

Totally depends on the school environment (suburbia/inner city) + student age + teacher age.
Inner City, 50 year old teacher of high school students - jeans okay Inner City, 24 year old teacher of high school students - jeans not okay since teacher needs to differentiate him/herself from the students.
Suburbia - I think you only get away with jeans if you are the Drama or PE teacher.
I think it is sad that your school is having to institute a teacher dress code. Will it actually make a difference to the quality of the education? Why hasn't the principal just addressed inappropriate dress with those that are doing it?

Well, we had a few younger teachers who dressed like hookers or they were going to the bar after work. No one said a word, certainly not our chicken shit principal. Finally after some parents complained out loud at a PTA meeting of which teacher attendance was mandatory and the teachers heard themselves referred to as "streetwalkers" by some parents, it ended quietly and no one had to say anything more to them. But it shouldnt have gone that far. If they didn't have the common sense to realize they weren't dressed like everyone else and certainly not for working with children unless they planned to show the kids their vay jay all the time, then some admin should have stepped up to the plate. It made our school look unprofessional by them dressing inappropriately and admin saying nothing about it until parents complained. Even then the few male teachers we had, you know, the ones who guess whether the teachers wears thongs or not, complained about the jealous parents who complained. Trust me, these teachers weren't HOT just sending the wrong message for a school.

Ewww Zib. That sounds HORRIBLE. I have never worked for a school that teachers dressed like hookers.
I HAVE however seen substitute teachers sent home for inappropriate dress.

It was pretty bad. They taught the very young kids as well so you'd think they'd have had issues getting down to their level without having everything exposed! It was an elem school, not too many guys worth having or dating at that level! Trust me.

It was only 3 of them. All new hires so I think they thought they were still in college maybe? Or that we old fuddy duddys didn't know how to dress. Well, I'm not climbing up a ladder in a dress to get a kid off the top of the monkey bars!

Thanks, everyone. It's been an interesting week with this topic in our school. Differentiating between high school students and young teachers is a definite cause of this change. Many people are worried about being able to afford additional clothing. Shoes are interesting because so many women's dress shoes are now made to be comfortable. They cost a bit more, but are easy to stand in all day and generally last a few years. I'm curious to see what my boss--the superintendent--decides to do. I do think many staff members' nervousness is unwarranted. Their appearance is fine. Zib, it's amazing what it takes sometimes for someone to get a clue.

Well, I'd have died if someone had referred to me as s streetwalker and when the parent did, all eyes turned to the girls dressed like them! That, to me, would have made me slink out in shame. To their credit though, they started dressing better and no one ever said a word, us or the newbies.

I cannot wait until the younger generation is in charge of dress codes. When the words dress slacks, blouses and stockings will become obsolete. I predict flip flops, tennis shoes, jeans and tank tops will be the new professional. Just need to get all the old fuddy duddies to retire and move to old age homes.

Or, by the time they are old enough to be in charge, they will have changed their preferences and will condemn casual.
FWIW, the younger interns at our agency are encouraged to wear jackets and ties and nice work business clothes. I think thats a good thing overall, but sometimes I think they get a bit of an attitude about it. Like "we're SO taking over this place from these lazy older people".

"A few years ago, suburban teen Max Flatow (Christopher Jones) was making bombs and LSD. Now he's a rock star using his fame to urge young people to vote at the behest of a senator (Hal Holbrook). But Max hasn't abandoned his love of anarchy. Soon, the voting age is lowered to 15, Max is elected president, and everyone over 30 is shipped to retirement homes. Richard Pryor and Shelley Winters co-star in this satirical cult classic."

I joke that I have a uniform. On Monday, I wear my black pants with my maroon shirt. On tuesday, my brown pants with the yellow sweater. On Wednesday, either one of my dresses. On thursday, my gray pants with the blue sweater. On Friday, I wear either my white pants or my jeans.
It isn't quite that rigid - but pretty damn close.

I take it you have casual fridays.

DS is a teacher. Dress code is business casual. She is in preK. On special days, they do dress in jeans or themes to go along with a special activity. At the preK level, there isn't much school spirit yet, so it's for things like Halloween, holiday parties, field days, etc.
Depending on what they are doing, the teachers can wear jeans. However, my DS is the consummate professional. Whenever I have met her after work, except for when they visited a farm, she was NOT wearing jeans. She likes to look nice and does not think jeans are appropriate. She thinks you need to start setting examples even at that age.
I've worked in CPA office and saw one woman first be sent home over cleavage and then fired over returning dressed in the same blouse the next day. Grow up people.

Well - I do still wear a bra, every day. Kinda like this - but with jeans: I never noticed this aspect of the picture before ( I've seen it prior to today ) ,but DAHMMM, she looks like she's in pain. She should have either stuffed some kleenex in there, or just gone topless.
