My oven just went out I had dinner all set and popped it in the oven, turned it on and...nothing! The burners still work and the broiler still works. So, my casserole is on the lowest rack and I have the broiler turned on for a few minutes, turned off for a few minutes, turned on for a few minutes, turned off............ Hope it doesn't come out horrible, I haven't eaten anything today and I don't know how long it will be before I can find a new heating element. I'm in no mood to have to buy a new stove. I thought I was a little grouchy when I just had a headache

Looks like Im going to have to make a road trip Woohoo! I'll feign weakness so I can have you, as a manly man, come fix it for me I am, after all, a helpless female with no mechanical ability at all, who should only be COOKING or BAKING with my oven and never, ever try to fix it! apple RJ (and to anyone that doesn't know me, I'm teasing! I've got more mechanical ability in my pinky than many of the prima donnas I work with. So, while I don't need a man to come fix it for me, it would be super-duper nice if I had one. And if RJ live closer I would totally pretend to not know what I was doing )

I changed the heating element (I think that's what it was called) in mine about a year ago apple. I don't have your mechanical know-how but found a fix-it forum and it was a pretty easy fix. Darn thing was ceramic though so I had to be careful not to break it.

I don't know exactly how old it is, but it's mustard yellow if that tells you anything The thing works great and I hate having to adjust to new appliances, especially since I'll have to buy a new one in a year or two anyway. I'd rather not have to buy two. My biggest problem is that I'm in a small town and at work Monday to Thursday (out of town and 6:30 to 5:00, possibly on Friday and Saturday too) so replacement parts may be hard to get any time soon.

Well I remember puttrid olive green and that was the 70's. Home Depot and Lowes usually runs 1 year no financing on large purchases.. If you know what part you need, see if you can order it online! Probably will be cheaper!

Wow...I use the thing almost every day and just went in the kitchen and noticed it's an off-white color (the mustard one was in the old house--oops). I guess I really just take the thing for granted. I could afford a new one, I just don't want to

I will definately be looking online for the part later, just have to accept that it's going to be a few days before I can use the oven.

I fixed it!!!!!! Well, kind of.... I checked the element before I tried to order one and it was good, so I pulled the stove from the wall and the schematic for it was right on the back Turns out the switch went bad so I just rewired it so that "broil" is now "bake" and the "real" broil does not work. I can live without a broiler until I can order a new switch (hell, I could live a year or more without the broiler) but I was NOT happy about having to wait to bake/cook. Glad it was an easy fix!

<<I checked the element before I tried to order one>>
I was just going to suggest you check the element with an ohm meter before ordering a new one because it might be the switch or thermostat. You might want to try spraying the switch contacts with some electronic contact cleaner, you might just have some dirt or grease blocking the connection.

You might want to try spraying the switch contacts with some electronic contact cleaner, you might just have some dirt or grease blocking the connection. The contacts are all incased in a plastic box that doesn't open up (without me breaking it) so spraying them is out. And they probably aren't greasy but possibly fried (or, who knows, a spider might have made a web in it, they can find their way into anything...) I'm hoping it's easy to find a new one--if not, I can jerry-rig something up for the broiler. My crappy $5 meter has served me well at home, but one of these days I want to get a Fluke like the one I have at work. I might have to have you both over so I can be the judge (different nights though...)

I spent over 20 years in Facilities Maintenance. Many times, I encountered this same situation. A few times, I was able to do a stop-gap fix by drilling a hole just big enough to insert the nozzle of the cleaner and spray the contact out. Even fewer times, it bought me a couple of days until the new part arrived.
<<And they probably aren't greasy but possibly fried (or, who knows, a spider might have made a web in it, they can find their way into anything...)>>
More than likely fried, and impossible to clear out without a burnishing tool. I once got a repair call on a HVAC unit that wasn't working. Turned out the problem was that a large earwhig had been crawling across the fan motor contactor as it clicked on, which caused the motor to single-phase and burn out. Frigging little insect cost about $250.00 for a new motor.

I almost said earwig instead of spider web, but I don't have earwigs in the house... We had an RV hookup at the campgrounds that wasn't working. Opened it up and the thing was full of earwigs. We were able to disassemble the circuit breakers (takes forever for us to get parts at work!) and it was packed full. They had got between the contacts, but fortunately, no equipment damage. Right now I can bake again so I'm happy, but if I can't find a replacement switch I might try the drill-hole trick. I'll have to remember that one for work--it's always good to get some tricks from people who've "been there, done that"
