Oh, see i thought it was a song about dying in a car wreck and being sent to Hell. Anyone else get that from that song? um, no. if I think of a car wreck song, it's Last Kiss - the original of which is almost creepy in its upbeat pop melody. Pearl Jam's cover gave a much better overall tone, IMHO.

Yeah, but "on a dark dessert highway, cool wind in my hair, warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air, up ahead in the distance, i saw a shimmering light, my head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, had to stop for the night"
So, that sounds like he was driving into a head on collision and crashed and wound up at Hotel California because they talk about not being able to kill the Beast and all that?

And, hearing the mission bell, being prisoners of their own devices, and you can check out but you can never leave would seem to be a reference to Hell where they are trying to stab the beast?
That is how the song always sounded to me.

or a cult, a la Jonesboro, or the followers of Manson? those followers joined voluntarily, but would never have been allowed to leave.

Good point. So, is there some official explanation by the Eagles of what is really about?

How about Blinded By The Light?
Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat With a boulder on my shoulder feelin' kinda older I tripped the merry-go-round With this very unpleasing sneezing and wheezing the calliope crashed to the ground Some all-hot half-shot was headin' for the hot spot snappin' his fingers clappin' his hands And some fleshpot mascot was tied into a lover's knot with a whatnot in her hand And now young Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand And some bloodshot forget-me-not whispers daddy's within earshot save the buckshot turn up the band

or Incense and Peppermints, by Strawberry Alarm Clock -
Good sense, innocence, cripplin' and kind. Dead kings, many things I can't define. Oh Cajun spice, sweats and blushers your mind. Incense and peppermints, the color of thyme.
Who cares what games we choose? Little to win, but nothing to lose.

Good point. So, is there some official explanation by the Eagles of what is really about? Henley said it was about the California music world experience, shoobs. Since he was one of the lyricists, I'd have no reason to doubt him. They were having a ball, there's no doubt about it; however, it was unsettling to them to find themselves a part of that mad, fast world.

Some song lyrics definitely need context to make sense.
The Refugee's Rock Ballad
A DJ's there spinning, but the rotters can't vote, and that tall, tall guy comin' over to rock the boat. Ain't gonna build that; that rape ain't legit, Who you gonna crown when all you got is ____?
Love 'em or hate 'em, do the psychopaths care, as the cowboy shoots words at invisible chairs? They shiver. They're dizzy. They're covered in welts. Their words are their daggers, all lower than belts.
Oh oh. There's such hatred today. Oh oh. In that bloodied fillet. The bill's come on board and we all gotta pay. Now rise up with me or the man... yeah the man's gonna put you in cha-ains.

My all time favorite band for crazy lyrics is Acid Bath. All of their songs are strange. I'll try and find one that's PG-13.
Old Skin
We smoke the toenails and the hair of the wise man, Under a black gods thumb, We dance like painted puppets, She bleeds orgasm in tecnicolor, An ocean of alien mystery, We eat the wisemans eyes for sight that we might see the darkness if we kill the lights fast enough, We eat the brain and pray that our eyes can open wide enough, We burn the dry shell,A funeral chant, The pulse quickens and we dance as the blossoms fall, A scattering of dust to the winds, the celebration of OLD SKIN, I feel every flower that is screaming to consume you, The earth and sky your cradle,The earth and sky entomb you, So is the way of forever,Teeming with simple cruelties, Beatings in cold rooms, Hands and head not found.

that's the thing about music...it can mean many different things to many different people...take the eagles "hotel ca" for example...is it about drug rehab, a house of ill repute, a deal with the devil, the music business, the american dream??? there's a good site that can answer a lot of questions, many times by the author...so what does don henley say about the song? www.songfacts.com/

Sometimes, even the song writers really have no clue what they were writing either. I think a lot of them were heavily medicated at the time they wrote them.

I am a fan of Fleetwood Mac and i find a lot of Stevie Nicks' songs to be perplexing:
Thunder only happens when it's raining Players on love you when their playing Say, women they will come and they will go When the rain washes you clean you'll know
Um, know what? What is that song about? I know it is called dreams. Dreams of what?

I agree, Stevie's song lyrics are hard to understand but I love her voice, none the less. Truly has a unique style. She's probably my top 5, ever. Maybe even top 3.

I guess i take the point of that song as her lover is leaving to follow his dreams but in reality he will end up 'listening carefully to the sound of his loneliness when his heartbeat drives him mad, in the stillness of remembering what he had". Etc. I think that is a pretty good interpretation.,

It is interesting to hear how other people interpret songs and what they mean to them.

With few exceptions, great lyrics are rarely storyline literal, there are allusions, analogies, points of references that expect the listener to know and appreciate the significance of a place, event or time…and extrapolate a meaning from that. Maybe old country and western honky tonk…”my baby done left me and I’m cryin in my beer” type of storytelling is an exception. And I love some country. The best lyrics are always “almost poetry”. And there are no two better examples than Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. I mean, taken literally what dose “Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again”, mean? Oh, the ragman draws circles Up and down the block I’d ask him what the matter was But I know that he don’t talk And the ladies treat me kindly And furnish me with tape But deep inside my heart I know I can’t escape Oh, Mama, can this really be the end To be stuck inside of Mobile With the Memphis blues again
Well, Shakespeare, he’s in the alley With his pointed shoes and his bells Speaking to some French girl Who says she knows me well And I would send a message To find out if she’s talked But the post office has been stolen And the mailbox is locked Oh, Mama, can this really be the end To be stuck inside of Mobile With the Memphis blues again
Mona tried to tell me To stay away from the train line She said that all the railroad men Just drink up your blood like wine An’ I said, “Oh, I didn’t know that But then again, there’s only one I’ve met An’ he just smoked my eyelids An’ punched my cigarette” Oh, Mama, can this really be the end To be stuck inside of Mobile With the Memphis blues again
Grandpa died last week And now he’s buried in the rocks But everybody still talks about How badly they were shocked But me, I expected it to happen I knew he’d lost control When he built a fire on Main Street And shot it full of holes Oh, Mama, can this really be the end To be stuck inside of Mobile With the Memphis blues again(great lyrics...for the rest) www.bobdylan.com/us/songs/stuck-inside-mobile-memphis-blues-again

In college, I ate some mushrooms and watched the Powerpuff Girls movie while the radio was on the local classic rock station. I swear that when Blinded By the Light came on it totally synced up with the movie!

Wasn't that on "Rumors"? That whole album was about her divorce with the other guy. Basically it is talking about even when something is real (or seems real), i.e. their love, it can go away and be gone. I always thought those lyrics were clearly about a defunct relationship. I think I found out later that it was specifically about their defunct relationship.

Christine McVie and John McVie divorced, Stevie and Lindsay Buckingham were off, and poor Mick Fleetwood wasn't screwing anyone in the band. Everyone was pissed and the music flowed!

Wasn't the reason Stevie and Lindsay broke up because Mick WAS screwing somebody in the band - It was Stevie! I remembered them performing and they were shouting at each other during Break the Chain. I think this was one of the times that you could just see their tension. I think this was it:

That video was amazing. Do you remember The Dance reunion tour in the late 90s? Stevie was just glaring at Lindsay, awesome!
