Well, I'm in my 40's, and I care a little. My Mom, who is 70, and I were going through it and at the end of talking about it she said "This is all really boring. I mean - who cares?" So, I don't have much hope. I always wonder if people care when they are older because they are pondering their own mortality and they think if they care about their deceased relatives, someone one day may care about them.

www.theshipslist.com/This site is alot of fun if you were fortunate enough to have your ancestors "cross the pond" during the expansionism period of American history.

Well, my mother arrived here in 1958. I don't think that's the "expansionist" period you're talking about.

is anyone else excited to see that "Who Do You Think You Are?" is coming back to tv? that's the show where celebrities trace their genealogy. I've been seeing teasers for Tim McGraw's show.

I've played with tracing my ancestry the last 12 years or so. In the 70's, one of my mother's cousins and another relative traced her father's family tree back to the early 1600's when the first one in VA was given a land grant from King Charles. My grandfather's mother has a name that is kind of rare in the US. Its found in TN, VA and MO and each group can trace their ancestry back to one of three brothers. BUT, no one has ever been able to verify where these three brothers came from. On my father's side, I've found some evidence that my great-great grandfather was related to Robert E. Lee and a descendant of Rober "King" Carter who was once the richest man in the US. Of course, even if that is true (I haven't found any records to verify it), none of those richest made it to my line. Beyond that, I can only take Daddy's family back to the early 1800's on his mother's side and on his father's, find no record of where my great-grandfather came from (just some records that seem to show he lived with the family of my grandmother's great-great grandfather as a child). I kind of got away from my research when I started getting confused. On my father's side, they all come from the same area of the same county and the 4 families intermarried quite a bit (ie: my grandfather's older brother married one of my grandmother's maternal aunts; grandfather's grandmother and grandmother's great-grandmother were sisters, etc.)

Let me see. On my mother's mother's side: mom's grandfather's family has been here since the revolution (and actually were part of it, they settled in the Boston area). My mother's grandmother on that side is interesting - the family is Irish, but her birth certificate says she was born in Canada, so we're thinking she was an indentured servant or something, then ended up here. Anyone who'd know has been dead for ages. My mother's father's family was from Germany pretty recently and she knows a little about them, but didn't see her father once from after she was about 15.
My father's family is interesting... my family name is decidedly not common, I'm one of 5 in the country with it - me, my brother, parents, and my father's mother. It's a changed version of a probably common Italian name, but oddly enough, it wasn't changed at Ellis Island - my father's father's birth cert has the original name on it, so at some point in his life, he changed it, for reasons unknown. Ancestry-wise, all I know is that all of my great-grandparents on my father's side came from Italy, and that my grandmother claims her mother's family was descended from the De Medicis, so who knows. I might look into it someday.

On mom's side one branch is traced back to the Mayflower, and another branch met them (American Indian). Dad's side is LDS so I'm sure if I looked in their genealogy records I would find something.
I personally know where my g-parents are buried but that is it. I'm 69 and parents have died so can't ask them. My husband was part Cherokee and our daughter has tried to find out more about his family. During the push west so many of the records have been burned/destroyed that she has about given up the task.
I don't have a 'home nationality'. I am a good mix of European decent.

I can trace my paternal grandfather's back to 1600s France. I can trace my maternal grandfather's family back to 1700s Germany. Have had a tough time tracing both grandmothers' family history.

Traced back to Welsh Goat-farmers. We have a coat of arms and all, with a Goats head on the top of the shield Imigrated to New York area in 1700's. The men are all named after their grandfathers, so we tend to see a lot of the same names throughout the generations

That show is pretty interesting - what a great idea for ancestry.com! I watched two shows and they were so different. The one show was Lisa Kudrow, who found records of her great-aunt being burned by Hilter's gang. They pretty much spent the whole show on that story line, including finding the guy that delivered the news to her grandmother.
The other was Sarah Jessica Parker - her family had all sorts of history, so they went from one historical event to another, tying her family in to each one. This went all the way back to having someone burned in the Salem Witch Trials. I would love to own that history. And, I'm sure it opens the door for all sorts of great jokes about Sarah Jessica Parker.

The show was on for a few episodes during summer rerun season. Some of the celebrities they traced had interesting history, others not so much.

On my dad's side my great-great grandfather helped to settle Santa Ana, Ca and was the first doctor there. There is a street named after him. My 10th great grandfather came from France and was a ship captain as was his son and his son, they settled in MA and was quite a well known family there. My mom's side was from Ireland and Whales. My husband's genealogy is done on both sides of his family. Both sides from England. He had a great grandfather who had 3 wifes and 31 kids.

I haven't done much genealogical research, but others in the family have. My mom's side goes back a ways. Mostly German, and her father's family spent several generations in Nebraska after they got here. There's one town in particular that the family basically owned every business in town and a good bit of the real estate. Still a bunch of "Honors" there to this day. My dad's side is a total PITA. My grandmother refuses to tell a soul who my dad's father was. She either doesn't know, or it's something really painful (rape/molestation). Her side goes back through Canada and to France. There's of course a little of everything thrown in here and there though.

My parents really got into the whole geneology thing a few years ago. My mom's dad's side of the family was a dead end at her dad. Apparently, he was adopted (she didn't know that) and she couldn't go any further as all of the documents she found were dead ends. She went pretty far into her mom's side, but didn't turn up anything spectacular.
Dad on the other hand found all sorts of stuff on his side. I don't remember the particulars, but I seem to recall something about him finding a document for a relative's will in the 1600's from the New England area and how it spelled out the daughter was to receive a horse, a pig and a slave girl. My Dad's response to that was, "We have ancestors that were slave owners?? - COOL!!" (to know my dad is to know he was speaking tongue in cheek)

We can trace one side of our family back to the mid-1400s in Spain.
