What are you supposed to do when you see a coyote? No joke..there have been quite a few sightings now in my neighborhood. I'm not in a wooded area- very suburbia/ residential. All of them have been seen during the day. My daughter came home at 5:30, and one ran across the lawn in front of her car. Should i run, make noise, play dead...? I'm nervous to go for my morning walk. Should i carry a whistle?

Thanks Sug. I just read those links. I think the whistle is a good idea. A few of the sites said to throw rocks at it, but I think I'd be too scared. Truthfully, I'd probably have a heart attack before i even got to blow the whistle!

Make sure you leave all cats and small dogs outdoors they are a coyotes' natural food source so it cruel to deprive the coyote of his food.

Depends where you live. They are not a threat to humans, but they will take out small pets. We are inside the city limits here so we cannot shoot them, but that is what they do on the nearby farms.

I live in a metro area and there is a pack of coyotes that lives in the park behind my house. I saw 11 of them one night standing in my driveway and on the street. Called animal control and they said they are normal in the area.

Do you have room for a donkey (or maybe it was a mule). My ex is now raising cattle and horses, and they were having trouble with coyotes. Evidently coyotes don't like donkeys.

At the last place I lived, I could hear the coyotes attacking animals in the night.
The year I lived in the mountains, there was a very tame coyote who would walk with me as I went from my house to my car. It was a daily ritual. I never fed it but I was told the person who lived in my house before me had left out food for the wild animals and had racoons living under the porch. I must have disappointed them terribly.

Coyotes aren't a threat to full grown humans.
The old saying still holds true "it's more afraid of you than you are of it."

What Phoenix said. However, around here, they can be rabid. If he looks mangy and sick, be extra careful especially if you have small animals around. Make sure there is no food source around your place. They "learn" where the restaurant is and they'll come back. That means no dog food or cat food, etc. They are mostly shot around here by the farmers. Not by me - I couldn't do it unless I was sure they were sick, but they aren't wanted around livestock.

When I lived in California (highschool) I would run in the evening and one night heard nails clicking behind me, when I would stop they would stop, when I would run they would follow. Scared the crap out of me and I had to have a friend go with me. It was a coyote They scared the crap out of me!

Coyotes can be a threat to humans, just like small dogs can be a threat, where I live, even inside city limits you can legally use a firearm to defend yourself from bodily injury, whether that is a snake, big cat, dogs, etc. We shoot them as well.

Keep your pets inside. They are the ones at risk.
We have lots of coyotes in the woods. Share the space & don't be a bad neighbor.

My cat is safe because he's an indoor pet. There's a park nearby, and maybe that's where they've been coming from. I walk in that park every weekend, and have never seen more than geese and squirrels. I really wish Animal Control would catch them and move them somewhere more 'country.'

The problem with moving them somewhere more "country" is that they will come back, canine packs, including coyotes and wolves are smart, they know where the easy meals are, in the places where man generally doesn't or isn't allowed to hunt or do population control, so you can move them, but either another pack will move in or they will move back.

We have coyotes around my house. They're generally afraid of people, but I always made sure my cat was in at night.
I came home from work one time and there was one sitting in my driveway. He walked away when he saw me coming.

You might call department of forestry or agriculture or something like that. Around here, there are news postings about coyote, mountain lion, and cougar sightings.
Also, people get llamas to fight them off. ;D

Sorry, not trying to worry you, but just want you to be prepared, I can be a bit of a pessimist, most of the time, coyotes will keep clear of humans, unless diseased or extremely hungry, it is with kids and small animals that are at the most risk. So make sure your presence is known, keep your trash can's/dumpsters tidy so their isn't food out, if you find a small dead animal in your yard such as rabbits and such, dispose of promptly and safely, have all the neighbors do the same and it can help make the area less desireable for coyotes.

Coyotes are no more dangerous to humans than foxes, raccoons, squirrels and other woodland creatures. Like those animals, about the only extent they can endanger humans is by being carriers of disease. Your fear is unfounded. Coyotes are not wolves.

Deantrip...we were just talking about not seeing rabbits on our lawn this year. I hope that's a fluke. Pheonix...thanks. The only thing on your list that does't scare me is a squirrel. I've never seen a fox, and racoons only from afar. I jingled my keys walking to and from my car today. Haha my neighbors will be calling on me soon for making so much noise!
