But every once in a while they do some little thing that lets me know I'm doing something right.
Last night I had to make the usual rounds through the kid's rooms well after they should have already been asleep to tell them to put their books down and go to sleep. My younger daughter (10) was already asleep for once, with a book on JAVA programming half open on her chest. My older daughter (11) was still awake reading something on my netbook, and when I told her lights out she says, "But I'm almost done reading this article."
"What are you reading about," I ask.
"Quantum particles," she says without looking up.
"Oh... uh... well don't stay up too late"
I just had to shake my head while I headed towards our room to go to bed. JAVA programming and quantum particles. I may never get grand kids, but my daughters are going to rock when they're older.
ETA - Dangit. The Proboards bear ate the bottom of my post.
I don't normally ask about your kids either, but I'm feeling all paternal today, so please share your favorite "I must be doing something right" stories. If you don't I'll send the bear after you!

Nice! I think I was in sixth grade when I read Stephan Hawking's A Brief History of Time. I probably need to try that again now that I might actually understand some of it.

I don't know why, but it is weird thinking of you with kids who are that old.

You must have a better education system. I don't think my kids (same age range) have ever heard of quantum particles. And they like science.

I thought you were raising little jocks, but they are really little geniuses. Very sweet.

I thought you were raising little jocks, but they are really little geniuses. They're both. Kinda. The older one was the first pick in the draft for summer softball, and will be the starting pitcher for her team. The younger one is less talented athletically, although she still plays, but she's the better musician.

DS is three and very sweet. When he sees a kid crying and tries to bring him a toy and pats them on the back I know I am doing something right.

I'm turning 30 this year and my kid will be one in 1.5 months. It may be a bit early for me. I'm pretty sure DS's disposition and behavior is more a reflection of his personality than anything we've done.

Well, we go to private school, and a few times they had fundraisers to help feed the poor. Our son didn't tell us about it, and instead went into his spending money (not even his charity money) and donated money. He donated one week's worth of allowance.
He gets upset when his separated from his sibling(s). #2 had emergency surgery and he was really, really worried. We let our kids forge their relationships with each other, only stepping in when bodily harm comes into play.
We've also gotten unsolicited emails from teachers about how they enjoy having #1 in class.
ETA: No doubt some of this is nature, but I'd like to think some of it is nurture.
When did you start them on musical instruments? Sorry, to t/j but I teach kids music privately, and WIBeth, you can PM if you want. It depends on the kids and the instrument.

When did you start them on musical instruments? 3rd/4th grade. Not like super early. Their old elementary school was pretty cool though, in that every single class from Kindergarten up got at least one hour of music a week. They played simple instruments like the triangle, recorder, etc. They all learned at least the basics of reading music, keeping time, and that kind of thing. Their current elementary school doesn't do the weekly music, but they have an elementary band that starts in 4th grade. As well as an advanced band, jazz band (in conjunction with the middle school), choir, and an inter-district travel band. The local school district and state have cut all funding for it, but the community has kept it going entirely through donations. So far anyway.

My 16 yr old DD is on the beach playing hooky from school today. Does that make me mother of the year or what?

Congrats to you! Kuddos to you for teaching your girls that they can do and be anything. And don't worry about grandkids, you'll have them. And wouldn't you rather have grandkids being raised by intelligent women? :-)

We were watching our daughters graduate, either high school or college I'm not sure which, and Loop turns to me to tell me she was pregnant. She was like hugely pregnant when she told me. Cut to a freaky hospital and her giving birth. Cut to us at home waking up in the middle night with baby crying. Then I woke up drenched in sweat. Maybe I'll ask my primary care doc if they can do like a backup vasectomy. Go re-crush the vas, maybe put a second set of clamps on, or something.

My kids will be be out of the house before I'm 40! DS will graduate high school when I am 40 DS is a super smart kid and does very well in school. But I was most touched right around his 13th birthday. He had a small falling out with one of his friends. The kid told DS he was a jerk and didn't want to hang out with him anymore. DS was hurt but moved on. A few months later it came time for DS' birthday and we were taking a couple of his friends to the bowling alley. DS came home and said "Mom, I know it's short notice but can you call and invite Wyatt to my party. His mom was just diagnosed with Cancer and he looked sad at school today. Maybe bowling with me and the guys would help him feel a little better" I called up Wyatt's mom and invited him. He came and had a blast. He and DS rekindled their friendship some. They aren't super close but they do still hang out together in school.

Responding to a post on another thread that's locked, so I can't respond there. ::Unless one of you has a time machine handy::
Talk to Dark, apparently his kids are some kind of science mutants. If anyone's going to develop it, they will. Not likely. The younger one is really into building stuff in general, robots in particular, and programming to a certain extent. The older one wants to be the first person to invent a quantum processor/computer, and a way to travel between universes if we do in fact live in a multiverse. I don't know about time travel, but I figure between the two of them they should have no problem building an intelligent robot army to take over the universe. Or universes if the older one ever works out that travel between them thing... *shrug*

that sounds... uncomfortable.... It sounds better than a surprise baby at 40! By like a ton. Kids are cool and all, and I really enjoy other people's in short bursts, but I'm like really really done having anymore of my own.

Thanks I am proud of him. He is an awesome kid. Kind of kid that will scold a bully on the playground for pushing a kid down. Once he lectured a group of kids for using the phrase "that's so gay" because he knows many gay people find that offensive. He is very open minded and respectful to everyone. We were having friends over for dinner one night when he was 9 or 10 and he asked who was coming and I said "Angela and her girlfriend" He said "They are lesbians right?" I said that yes they were lesbians. His response was "Cool, I don't have any lesbian friends yet"

Eons ago a co-worker was all set to sue the doctor that did his vasectomy because his wife got pregnant. Turns out his surgery was not the problem. The wife left him and the kids they already had for the real sperm donor.
