As most of you know DH is a civil/environmental engineer. He has just recently passed the PE. Since he works for a ding dong he is ALWAYS looking at job postings. The question is is there a way to show that he passed the PE but is waiting for the state of NJ to finish it's side of the work. He doesn't have it yet so he knows he isn't' a PE yet but he thought it would help if he could figure a way to indicate he passed the test but just didn't get the paperwork from the state yet. Any advice from engineers and other professionals or HR people would be greatly appreciated!!

*Remembers she needs to start studying for the PE*
Could he put PE with a star and a footnote indicating the test has been passed and the paperwork is being filed in state XX? with whatever confirmation number or ID number?

So not an engineer, but in our recent hiring of a director, we needed two certifiacations. We had applicants who listed the cert and then simply indicated the month/year the test was taken if they didn't have the results yet, or the month they were taking the test if they had it scheduled. I am guessing that people in the industry know the timeline for officially getting the PE, so if I were him, I'd put on the resume PE (test passed 5/25/12) Then folks know he's passed the test, but is still awaiting the offical paperwork

put a sentence like the following under Certifications, or business experience, or something.
Passed PE Exam 6/4/12

that's going to look really funny shannendoah.... PE goes after your name on the resume... so it'd be:
Beachbum's Husband, P.E. (test passed XXXXX)

This is NJ he didnt get a confirmation number just an email saying congratulation you should look up your test results. In the congrats email it says that he will get his email after he gets he take home law exam completed and passes, obviously, and then they will send him an application with his bill for the registation in with they money. The only time line they gave was it would be at least 63 days after they get their money. I have no clue when they will get him the rest of the stuff so he can get it to them. I would think this would take at least 4 months. PS he said the PE was the craziest hard test. It was hardier than he could even imagine.

That in our mind wouldn't be right. But maybe it can be a footnote or something in his cover letter. I would just be afraid that if it isn't in the resume it might get lost in translation so to speak.

Does he have any friends that are in the field that hace their stamp he can ask without letting on he's looking around? I'd either keep using EI designation or go the asteriked route until i got the approval... probably the asteriked with the 'filed on' date at the bottom of the resume because it's a bigger deal to have your stamp as a civil than to have it as a cheme like me ETA: Saw your post above me. Then I'd keep the EI and mention that the PE test is passed and paperwork is filed

Maybe I should have been clearer.
In most businesses, the certs go after the name. However, even if you put PhD after your name, you have a section called Education that calls out when/where you got your PhD. I believe that there should always be a Certifications section that lets me know how long you've had a cert. So in the Certifications section is where he would list the PE and the date he took the test.
So basically, follow Archie's advice

Gotcha Shannedoah. No one I've seen bothers listing when they got their stamp... eithr you have it or you don't, so either you have a P.E. ( or an E.I. like me) or you don't... so the listing the 'date completed' was really strange for me

We have one friend who has a MS,PP,CME and a PE.

This is why i'd keep the EI if he's not comfortable using the PE... it's important, especially for civil engineers to be on a pathway to/have stamps
or are you EIT's in NJ?

put a sentence like the following under Certifications, or business experience, or something. Passed PE Exam 6/4/12 It only took about a month for me to get my official paperwork from the state of MO and part of the delay was I had to wait until the new governor was sworn in so that my PE was from his administration and not the previous one. Congrats to your husband. I am sure that is a big relief.

I've been in that limbo state dying for my official number and everything to come through and everyone knew I had it, but just didn't have the number yet.

They call it the EIT but I have seen FE also. Most people don't actually use the letter EIT though. It is kind of useless for Civil's. It is sort of like trying to be a little bit pregnant. If you ain't you aint. ;D Companies might give a little bump in pay if you have it but I have never heard of one actually caring much one way or the other except as a part of the path to the PE. He is pretty old for a person taking the PE so he had to take it twice. Maybe it is because it was in NJ but a HUGE portion of the test questions fell into the WTF catagory. Plus just to make things worse it was two four hour parts done while sitting on the oldest folding metal chairs. To make matters worse the one he got had broken and someone had nailed a bit of plywood over the top so the person didn't fall through it. He still talks about the one screw on the top that he thinks got way to intimate with his botom.

FE is the name of the first exam.. LOL!!!!!!! in NC when you pass it, you're then an EI. Then you work 4 years and take the PE and get your stamp, which is not that useful as a ChemE but gets you super Brownie points with any other ChemE PE <----- Still needs to study for it

If it is PM me and I can give you the tips that seemed to help the most. Most Civils are pretty impressed with it and now I know why. ;D It is kind of make or break for him since he works in a very small office plus would like to hang out his own shingle.

Just put a note in the cover letter that the PE exam was passed and is awaiting the registration number. When I passed the PE in Indiana, I knew that I had passed but didn't receive my registration number until they received the $25 fee charged by the professional licensing agency.
Not sure how other states assign numbers but here in Indiana, all PE's start with the number "1" and all professional land surveyors start with the number "2". The following two numbers are the year that the professional licensing agency authorized you to practice. I'm PE194XXXXX and LS293XXXXX.
And I thought the FE exam was probably the hardest of the four tests I took followed by the LS exam. The FS exam was the easiest by far.

You can't use the PE after your name until the certification is issued with the registry # etc. I think that is even in the 'ethics' part of the study/test you take!
Create a section in the resume called Certifications or Professional credentials. That's where you would list PE test passed xx/xx/xxxx.
Also if he has Linked In, in the section under his name he can list PE (just not after his name) and test passed xx/xx/xxxx. That way when people search on PE he will come up.
