I went back to the dentist today and remembered my last visit. While I was in the chair, a mom peeked in. She didn't want to disturb me but her three year old opened her door and scratched my car. I got out of the chair to check the damage. I honestly couldn't see the new scratches for the old ones and the dint in my tailgate was much worse than than the scratches anyway.
The mom was relieved she didn't have to pay for a paint job and I was glad to reassure her that there was no harm done.
Since that visit we had a historic snowfall here in SC. Folks with new cars stayed home. I figured I didn't have much to lose. (I did actually lose control of my car, but didn't hit anything.)
Anyone else glad to have an old car?

No but I wish I did. I have high car payments and expensive insurance. I've learned my lesson, as soon as I can I am getting rid of this car and getting an older one.

I love having a car old enough to be paid off but new enough to start in -40 weather. Since I did buy this car new I am maintaining it really well. Here's to 10 more years.

Happiness is being the owner of a 14-year-old Honda CRV with 188k. She's starting to 'age naturally' but has the heart of a lion. Don't know what I'll do when Syl gives up the ghost. I haven't saved enough to buy a replacement yet . . I was living in an apt. when I paid her off but have bought a house and done a fair bit of work to it.

My father has a 1965 Caddy Eldorado with over 400,000 miles on it. He says you can keep an old car forever if you can still find parts and have the money to keep repairing it. His old car still looks almost like new. Maybe I will inherit it when he finally gives up the keys? But does it ever guzzle gas.

My car is a 1994 Honda Civic with 113K miles on it. Runs great. Had to replace the clutch at 104K miles, but that game me a lot of miles. Never had a repair that wouldn't be considered maintenance. Things are going to wear out on a car that old.

I have a 2000 Dodge Caravan that ds is driving now. I've taken loving car of it and now I don't have to worry with ds driving.
I have a 6 mo. old 2010 Honda CRV that I will be driving til it dies. As I don't go anywhere it should last a long, long time.

Still have the first car I ever owned: 1991 Corolla station wagon, 205K miles and counting! It's definitely had to have some repairs here and there (right now DH has the wheel off, in the process of replacing the CV boot) but it's great to have a cruddy yet practical car for picking up compost, bringing a sandy dog home from the beach, etc--and it still gets great gas mileage. It's semi-retired; I bought a 2005 Focus wagon a couple years ago because I wanted something more reliable for long trips...but I still use the Corolla for lots of things, including trying to keep the mileage from creeping up so fast on the Focus. The other thing I love about old/cheap cars: minimal carrying costs! It's about $300-400 a year for insurance and registration on the Corolla. Buying the Focus was kinda traumatic; I paid about 8K for the car and then another 1K to the state of CA for taxes/registration. Can't imagine having to pay taxes and registration on a Beemer or Audi or similar

I was putting more money into my OLD car then it was worth. Everything and I mean everything was braking down... No I don't like car payments, but I now get 40 MPG's vs 20 with my OLD one! It will be paid for in less then a year, so I'm not complaining!

My car is just over 3 years old and I paid my last car payment in December. This is the first time I have not had a car payment and I must say that it's a fabulous feeling!! I have decided to pay myself the car payment amount monthly and save up so that I can avoid a car loan in the future, or at least have a decent down payment saved up. Now I just have to cross my fingers that the car will last another 4 or 5 years...

Yes and no. I love having an older, reliable, paid off car that still looks great and gets great gas mileage. But I worry that somebody will smash it up and it will become undriveable. That would hurt my heart as I love my car. It's a red Mitsubishi 3000 GT SL and it's still gorgeous and has low mileage. I don't want to lose my beloved car, nor do I want a car payment - so that stresses me out. LOL!

I love a beautifully cared for classic car - as long as it's someone elses! ;D
I drive a 2003 minivan - it's been years since I've had a car payment and I'm hoping to get several more years without car payments before I have to buy a replacement.
my boss one day noticed a scratch on it and asked me what happened. I didn't know and I didn't care. It gets me where I need to go.

Right now, I'm driving a 2007 Subaru with another year of car payments. It still hurts me when it gets dinged, but quite frankly, I like having a car where all the pieces work on it correctly. I bought this car new and fully plan on driving it until the proverbial wheels fall off of it.
My old 1991 Mazda MX6 bit the dust when an uninsured driver hit it in 2004, doing an illegal U turn, totalling it. I loved that car, but was getting increasingly frustrated with the things that were falling apart. They were minor things, but irritants nonetheless. But that car started every single time I turned the key (which broke off in the ignition and I had to pay a locksmith to retrieve) and at 13 years of age, got nearly 40 mpg.

I am quite happy with my almost 11 year old Camry.... 160k miles on it, had it 2.5 years & it had 122k on it when I bought it. It's fully paid off and runs great. I'm glad to have an older car when I have to slide into a snowbank going down a hill due to slippery roads and get a small crack in my bumper..... happened last week Going to drive this car into the ground!

My daily driver is a 1987 GMC s-15 with about 115k. The body isn't pretty but it's 4x4 and still runs like a top.
DH has a 1992 Chevy 1/2ton 4x4 with about 90K and our spare vehicle is a 1997 Chevy Blazer 4x4 with about 115k.
As old as they are, we have not had to put all that much money into them other than regular maintenance.

DS drives an 86 Isuzu Trooper. We had it painted, and it actually looks kind of like the new range rovers! One of the great things about it was that when we bought it, and listed DS as driver our car insurance went down $15 per month, since it removed the son as a driver of my higer value Ford truck!
One of the hard things about adjusting to driving it is that it does not have the bell that goes off when you leave your lights on, so both DS who have driven had to learn rather quickly how to jump start it.

We have older cars (bought used paid cash), but they both look pretty new. Ya I have a couple of dings, but nothing that anyone else would notice. DH drives a 2003 and I drive a 2000. I just turned 80K miles and DH has around 60K so we'll be driving them for a looooong time.

DW drives a 2000 Accord that looks new, runs great and is ulev so it doesn't pollute much. We keep talking about getting a newer car but I suspect if we do we will replace my 7 year old Explorer first since her car is in better shape. Both bought used. It is amazing that some folks pass up such gems for "new" cars.

Our cars aren't that old ~ but we like them, they are paid for, and we are planning to keep them. My wonderful DH drives a 2002 Ford Explorer (bought new). I drive a screaming yellow 2006 Ford Mustang (bought new).

I drive a Toyota Matrix that's 8 years old and just turned 143k miles today. I bought it new, so I've been its only owner. It runs very well, but is starting to require more and more routine maintenance. (Things start falling apart after 8 years.) I like that it's LONG paid for, and that I haven't had any car payments in 5 years or so, but I am getting new car fever. We'll see.

We drive our cars until they pretty much won't go any further. We made a '74 Pinto last for 30 years. We can do this because my husband does most of our maintenance and repair work. Right now we drive a '94 Mercury and a '97 Dodge for our everyday cars. We do have something newer for out-of-town trips because anywhere we go from our town involves long distances over the desert.

I LOVE MY 98 DEISEL JETTA! It has just under 150K miles, original clutch. No major repairs! And I get mid-high 40s MPG. Hoping I can make it last another 12 years!

I love older cars. You don't feel the need to go to the body shop if it gets a minor ding or scratch (usually received when you park them in a busy parking lot). I love NOT making car payments too, lower tabs fees, and lower auto insurance!!

Uuuut oh! I think I jinxed my car by bragging about it. The AC isn't working. Fortunately it died in February so I have time to shop around for repairs.

My car is a 2007 but now has over 15K miles on it, I decided not to worry about scratches from the day I got it. When it snows I take my 97K truck with 4wheel drive but really miss my little car with the remote start and heated seats, last time the snow was light so I took my car anyhow. I like having a truck for hauling things but an not sorry I bought my little Sebring Limited.

we had a historic snowfall here in SC. Folks with new cars stayed home. I figured I didn't have much to lose.
Actually, you did have much to lose - your health, your life, the life of a family member in the car with you, etc. I was more concerned with that than the fact that my car is not "old."
