Dutt here. (that's sort of cheating, huh) Molly said this LOL Molly is a cheater!!! (Sung to the tune of na na na na na na) Molly I love your kitty pic. I'm going to have to figure out how to do pics. Everyone has done so well in 2010. I have too. No debt, lots of rebate money and such. The heating is killing me though. Good thing I don't owe anyone else because the heating man is thirsty. Now that there is no spell check, everyone will know my secret. I can't spell well!!!!

And molly, for all your hard work and the good sense you exhibit on a regular basis on this and the other boards, I just karma'd you! Hope you have a Happy New Year, but I know you will with your DH coming home in a few weeks--please thank him from me and my family for his service and thank you for your sacrifice in sparing him to go do his thing for all of us!

I would like to get better at gardening and also learn a few more household repairs to save money. I have started couponing and have done a decent job of it, but there are people on the Grocery thread that say they only spend $100 a month or less on Groceries for one person! I easily spend twice to three times that amount so I have some work to do!

I would like to learn how to cook. I think that if I actually enjoyed cooking, I would cut out all of the 'convenience buying' that I am currently doing. If I cooked, I could plan a menu for the week, do one big shop - and be done with it! Limiting my trips to the grocery store would probably help cut down what I am spending on food.

WEDNESDAY 12/29 QUESTION OF THE DAY
What sort of things do you spend $$ on, entertainment wise?
I just bought a Kindle, so my entertainment is spent on electronic books now. I also like cross stitch so that is where some more of my entertainment money goes. And bowling league on Friday nights!!!!

My entertainment money is spent on physical fitness, which helps reduce medical bills and keeps me fit for sports. I shoot archery which will translate into big game hunting ie., food gathering.
I am in a social group that goes out for lunch monthly and a coffee group. I do lunch when it's a restaurant that's moderately priced. The coffee group, I lead so I have to be there.
My library, yes I own it from tax dollars, has a good supply to keep me busy.
The internet, cable tv, and this message board also keep me entertained.

I love cooking, and most of what I know I learned from my XMIL. My own mom was a terrible cook. I have actually also learned a LOT from both of my DD's who are 22 and 23!

Quilting- the biggest money pit of all time. Lately I have been spending too much time on the internet and not enough time sewing.

12/30 - YES, but it depends on what I am going to do with it. In my poor college days I bought clearance meat, but I probably wouldn't do that now. I will buy clearance produce though if I plan to use it that same day. I once got 8 pounds of tomatoes for 2 dollars. They were supposed to be tossed out for imperfections, but the manager sold them to me and I took them home, cut off the few bad spots, and made tomato sauce. It was fantastic!

12/30 Question of the Day: Would you/do you ever buy clearance meat, bread or produce? YES!! I always check out the clearance food cart at my grocery store. I just picked up 4 boxes of Kashi Go Lean Cereal for $1.80 each - because the boxes were slightly crushed. I also buy the bagged lettuce when it is marked down - I just make sure to eat it fast. I avoid buying dented canned goods that are marked down.

Would I buy clearance??? ;D
Once a month (more or less) I visit the local bakery resale shop and come home with six tote bags of bread, english muffins, and the occasional special. All of it goes into my deep freezer and taken out as needed. The store I go to also gives out punch cards you can redeem for a free loaf of bread and has a free display you are invited to take from if your purchase is big enough. Mine always is! LOL! I usually go for a white vienna or sourdough since that bread has been around longer than the stuff delivered that day. Wonderful french toast!
I think I've bought one piece of meat for regular price in the last six months. The clearance bin is the first place I go to. I bought two large chuck roasts for less than four dollars each. I plan my menus around what I find there.
And what about the "damaged" or "freight sale" grocers? Does anyone besides me use them?

I fondly call ours the "used food grocery store"--I use it all the time! You can find some great deals there and some wonderful local food. The only problem is that you may find something you really like and then never see it again. Sometimes I'll try something as soon as I get home and if I really like it, I'll see if I can stock up the next day.

Would I buy clearance???
I just can't buy clearance very often. I will buy meat if I see it but it is very rare (no pun intended) to see clearance meat in my area.
As for bread - never. I live alone and because of that I buy one loaf of bread for 2 weeks, so I get it as fresh as I can. Occasionally, I will go through it quicker, but not often. I just don't like frozen/thawed bread.
Produce - occasionally if I find it and it can be used quickly.

I stopped at the Sara Lee bread outlet on my way to my Dad's on Thur. Got a pkg of 12 mini whole wheat bagels for $0.79 (other local bread outlet is usually .99-1.49). Wed I went to the Sara Lee pastry outlet near my house. Got a NY cheesecake on sale + 10$ Wed senior discount for $2.70

12/31/ Question
Do you regularly cut out or print coupons for things you do not usually use/buy in the hopes of a really great deal/rebate.

I do tend to cut them out but usually they sit in my organizer. I always have hope though!
