"Mom arrested for taking 5-year-old tanning"
OMG!! Go to the Yahoo front page and catch a glimpse of this woman!! She is a walking skin cancer ad and an anti-aging cream marketer's dream (to NOT look like her)!!

"The key is to find a morbidly obese Dr. IMO"
It's like going to a HOT gynecologist...NO WAY!! I want the old, fat, half-blind, homely ones giving me a physical.

ROFL!!!!! OMG! moxie- Have you met my gyn!? He's not ugly for a guy old enough to be my grandfather- but there's definitely no interest other than professional. On the downside- he's talking about retiring now that I found him!

patstab- I admire you. I used to get so tired- and still do from the ones of my family that are still around- telling me that I need to "just deal with" putting on weight because we all do.

I dated one BRIEFLY. The idea of having sex with him made me cringe. He was absolutely gorgeous but him looking at vay jays all day just didn't do it for me.

Just kinda felt I would be compared. I actually told him why I wasn't going to date him anymore and it said I wasn't the first woman to say it made her uncomfortable. I'm sure some lucky woman is living the life of Riley with him.

zib- I would be afraid he would want to give me a free yearly first! Like dating a trainer who checks your form and monitors your eating.

I was having some breathing problems and ended up at the pulmonary specialist, so when I finally meet with the Dr. he's Korean and as big around as a twig and tells me I need to lose 50 lbs. After considering several responses I looked him right in the face and told him 'not gona happen'. So he starts going over my numbers to convince me and finds out, surprise surprise, the numbers are really not bad. It is possible to 'fit but fat'. I just decided many years ago not to get on the scale at the Dr's office and I refust to own a scale. My Dr. actually asked me one time why I won't get weighted, this is what I told her 'When I get on the scale the number depresses me and I eat. Is that effective?' My weight has gone up and down in the past and right now it's up, but I haven't been small/thin since before puberty and now I'm post-menopausal. I know I should be more physically active but just not feeling it. And truthfully if my Dr. wouldn't get off my back about my weight, I'd change doctors. I do know that one of the impact factors of my weight is that I have a sleep disorder, when I sleep better I am smaller, but I can't seem to find an effective treatment for the problem. But I have decided to be happy no matter what I weigh and whatever the size tag on my clothes say.

998fbird- I am happy for you, really, but that really doesn't work realistically for most of us.
The number on the scale depresses me too- but I need to get off my butt and do something about it so I can get back to my life. I miss being able to be active without having to worry about severe asthma attacks and stress fractures to my ankle.

998Fbird, so you're telling me that you can't breathe, can't sleep, but are 'fit and fat'? Even if your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers are perfect, carrying extra weight can still cause issues. For example, I have a bad back and feet and many of my joints are rather weak, so while I could weigh a lot more and still be relatively healthy, I know that if I don't want to destroy my joints, I need to keep the weight off. It sounds like you could be in a similar situation. It is fairly common for extra weight to cause or worsen sleep problems and you can't deny that loosing 50 lbs would lessen the workload on your lungs. Fat cells use oxygen too.
If the scale depresses you, then I would concentrate on eating better and exercising more. It's not like the numbers on a scale tell the whole story anyway.

Once I was 30 lbs overweight, (40 lbs overweight according to the charts) my back gave out and I couldn't do any kind of vigorous exercise without hurting myself. And since I'm reactive hypoglycemic, most diets don't work for me. It was pure dumb luck that I stumbled upon a diet that actually kept my blood sugar stable, and I'm also very lucky to have a husband who was willing to make sacrifices so we could afford the $300/month for those medifast 'meals'.

When I first went to my pmc physician I was at an all time low weight for me(was just so depressed from being dumped by a bf that I couldn't eat for days!)...just coincidence that I had to change docs right then , but I couldn't maintain that. When I went back and had gained 10 lbs and my pb was high, boy scolding I got! I explained the situation to deaf ears. Ehh there are worse things then being the chubby girl with high bp, although I wish he would prescribe meds instead of wait for me to lose the "break up" weight again... that won't happen! lol

Has Your Doctor Asked You To Go On A Diet? No, they're too busy scolding me about my smoking.

Yet tells me I'm fat!
I weigh right around 100lbs less than him. And use to weigh around 200 less. Don't smoke, rarely drink- my vice is hot cocoa...

I am a lifetime Weight Watcher member since 1979. Losing weight has never been easy for me but I kept the weight off by making better eating choices: lots of veggies and fruit. Since menopause, it has been a bit more difficult so I have had to up the ante on exercise. I actually love to be active but it was the time factor that was difficult. You know how it is with work, kids, obligations, etc.. Years ago I started walking during my lunch time and that habit stuck. Not only did I get the exercise benefit, but my employer got the benefit of an energy renewed employee. I was much more productive in the afternoon after my walk. Too bad employers don't realize this--they seem to think working through lunch is a better idea! In any event, I'm still a daily walker/hiker. We live in a very hilly area so I get a lot of variety.
Most important: don't beat yourself up if you slip and eat something "bad". Let it go and move on. Just try to make the best possible choices.
As for the doctor: as in all things, some are better than others. All they can do is try to get you to change. It has to be frustrating to them when they know your health would improve if only.... DD2 just finished her 3rd year of med school. Her last rotation was cardiology. Common factor with most of the patients: obesity!

Under some of the new federal incentive programs for doctors one of the things they are required to ask and document is that they have advised their patients who are overweight.

Personally, I wouldn't trust a doctor that was too 'diplomatic' (i.e. chickenshyt) to say something if I were doing something blatantly unhealthy. It is their job after all. I can still do what I want with my life and I'm not the kind of person to be traumatized by a 2 minute conversation.

Well I go to my doctors so regularly that my weight and diet are constantly on the table and for damn good reasons too. I'm seen by a large number of specialist's and basically me losing weight means more health benefits than can be named. I've lost about 19 lbs since January. One of my doctors said I looked younger. That alone is worth it.

I can still do what I want with my life and I'm not the kind of person to be traumatized by a 2 minute conversation. Hi All! The visit described was way back in June of 2011. It has been almost a year since I decided to not only laugh his "You're waay too fat" comments off and realize that he wanted to help me from getting diabetes and heart disease. ( I have a strong family history of both). I also read that my uterine pre-cancer and ovarian tumor may have been "fed" by increased estrogen. The oncology doctor warned that my increased estrogen from increased fat may have been feeding the cancer....not sure. Time to go on a diet and exercise program. I have slowly lost about 46 pounds. I now weigh about 143, and I wear a size 6 or an 8. On a wild day, I might fit into a 4. I exercise every morning, M-F for about 1 1/2 hours, and I swim 2-3 days a week. I take Sundays completely off from exercising. I have met new friends. We all like fitness and exercise. We talk about easy and healthy meals. The added benefit is Lower cholesterol, high blood pressure, and low blood sugars.

I just went to a new CNP and she just said that we would like to get your weight in the over weight catagory and out of the obese side. Which means about 25 lbs for me.
I think she is duty bound to point it out from a health perpective. I also want to be there and then in a healthy weight. She didn't hound me, was very understanding of my challenges and also told me that I look like an active person. I really liked it when she said that! ;D

It isn't just a matter of looks anymore. I will admit that I look and feel better having lost about 45 pounds.
At first I just thought it was better for my high cholesterol, high blood pressure and high blood sugar (A1C). Now I have learned that the "Western diet" red meats, fats, sugars, and salts may be the cause of many cancers. Time for me to get serious about my health.

That's the first thing doctors tell their patients when they are overweight, i.e. to lose the weight and to go on a diet. Usually it is followed with exercise. Around my neck of the woods, the doctors are advising patients for a walk.
