DH used to work in an auto service center and said some of their wealthiest clients dressed/looked like total slobs. His take on it was that people who wanted to be "seen as" well off dressed better, and those with true wealth just didn't care how people thought of their appearance. I was thinking about this thread. Really thinking about all the people I know who have real money. None of them are flashy. They don't drive luxury cars or where cloths that you would think much about. These are the people with more than a million in the bank. Of the people I know, who you would think had money based on how they look, none of them actually have much money. They are high income with a lot of access to credit. All flash, but no cash. Luxury cars, vacations abroad at 5 stars places, huge houses, designer cloths, huge restaurant bills. I know a lot of people who fall into this category. A lot, a lot. Now maybe those who work on commission know this. I kind of think they do. But it is probably easier to flatter the ego of the image conscious and get a sale than to haggle with the ones who are more conscious of their net worth.

It doesn't matter to the salesman if you are raiding your 401k, using credit cards or home equity, or saving up your pennies to spend some money. What matters is who is more likely to spend.

Natural Gas at 2.17.. Who needs nuclear or to worry about high generation costs.. Good solution for the shortrun, while we build more reactors, we now have 104 in operation, need 200 or 300 more. But long run, we should try to get rid of carbon air pollution. If we used nukes for energy that would take away about 45% of US air pollution. (the coal & gas power stations). The other 50% or so comes from cars. So we need a Manhattan project to develop a 700 mile car battery, one that will last for a full day's drive on a trip. (That is where we should spend our R&D tax dollars, not on solar & windmills). By replacing carbon fuels, the skies over LA, Chicago, Boston, will be cleaner than it was in the 200 yrs ago when coal was used to heat houses & factories. Or we switch cars over the nat gas until hydrogen is viable..

I know people on here have said to not mention you are already financed or that you are paying cash because you will get a better deal if you don't. I have found the opposite to be true. Whenever we have gone in for a car and needed to be financed they rarely would negotiate on the price of the car and played hardball. When I was buying a car for my stepdaughter I had sales people falling all over me when they found out I was paying cash for the car. The dealer I finally went with not only met my terms, but as I was texting with my DH (who was in Iraq) to find out if he was ok with the terms, the dealer threw in a free 1 year warranty on the car. When we bought DH's SUV we were pre-financed through our bank and had the check with us. They tried to play hardball with us but we told them we would just go someplace else if they couldn't come closer to meeting our terms. In the end they came within $200 of meeting our terms so we took it. We never had that experience when we were needing financing.
