Looks like Monday morning, TD and I will be taking another jaunt down to Seattle so they can remove my other hip.
Not a happy camper.

Aw Mich! TD has to do a better job of keeping you out of trouble. Will definitely have you in my thoughts & prayers on Monday. FIL had a hip replacement recently. He had a smooth recovery & did all the exercises he was told to before & after surgery. (He says that helped a lot!)

Did ya know this was coming ?
If I was honest with myself, I would say that the thought of this was at the back of my brain when my inflammatory markers did not respond well.
But I was asymptomatic until I went off of antibiotics last week, then 5 days later my hip turned crankier and crankier. Aspiration yesterday showed a gram + cocci, the same shit that was in my abscess and other hip.

Holy crap Mich! My thoughts and prayers are with you that you can get through this process. One has to wonder now whether there were improper procedures with the implants, or whether your body is simply rejecting them.

Wow!!! What a bummer, Mich. I'm sending good vibes, thoughts, prayers etc. for you and, most especially, for the medical folks treating you.
So, how does one manage without any hips? Because they're not replacing it, right, they're simply removing it until your blood counts improve and they can do another implant? I guess we'll have to cut TD some slack over the next few weeks because it sounds like he's going to be focused on you (and rightfully so!).
Take care and best wishes for some relief and whole lot of success.

Wow! That stinks but I am an optimist and think that after this hip is replaced you will be feeling better than you have in years!!!
I did have a boss who had one hip and both knees replaced. He was 66 and took up bike riding and such because he was so thrilled that his joints didn't hurt anymore.
I know it probably wont make you feel any better now but I hope it does.

Aw, Mich. I have to ask the obvious: what's next? Same type of replacements for both, or do they try something totally different?

Let me know if there's anything we can do for you. I'd offer to come visit you, but I don't think I'd want the first time I met someone to be while I was in the hospital, so we'll skip that. But do send me a pm (or have TD do it) if there's anything I can help with here in Seattle.

Holy crap Mich! My thoughts and prayers are with you that you can get through this process. One has to wonder now whether there were improper procedures with the implants, or whether your body is simply rejecting them. Neither, this is simply the result of a massive internal abscess Mich got. Not sure why, her theory is a boil that she got on her waist not that long before the abscess developed. The doctors won't say one way or another but it makes as much sense as anything else not that it really changes anything. It's nothing to do with the implants themselves or the insertion of them by the two surgeons. She recovered very quickly, no post-op infection, everything as looking really good until this.

What TD said is correct. There was nothing wrong with the implants, the insertion of them or my body rejecting them.
I had 2 different implants, a MOM (yeah, the one that has gained all the publicity) and when the surgeon took it out, he said that it was a shame because it was perfectly installed and *should* have lasted me a lifetime. The second implant is a ceramic and it has now been determined that it is also infected.

They put in what they call a spacer. It's an antibiotic impregnated fake joint made out of acrylic. It cannot withstand the forces that a hip would normally take, so I can bear very little weight on it.
Right now, the currently infected side has been doing about 90% of the work since the other hip was removed in Dec. I really hope that there is a spacer on the market that is stronger.

God, I am so sorry. Wow all you have been through and now more. Makes me really nervous now to get my CT scan of my hips because Doc thinks I may be in some what sort of a similar situation as you and you are having huge issues. Keep strong.

Hi there
I'm in the waiting room at Swedish Ballard. Mich is out of surgery according to the monitor and is in the recovery room. I have not seen her yet and won't until she is in her room, no idea when that will be. Surgery was supposed to start at 11:00 so if they were on-time, it's been about 4.5 hours so far.
