I'm no expert on geological formations, so I'll have to take your word for it. It's amazing the range of types of oil, from the Eagle Ford that has the density and viscosity of gasoline, all the way up to a few types of oil that are even heavier than water and not a liquid at room temperature. I'm sure it would be a fascinating subject to learn more about.... Not that I have the slightest desire to think much about oil outside of work. Oh wait.... BOB, THE INTERESTING THING ABOUT OIL SAND IS ISRAEL HAS MORE OIL THEN ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THAT NECK OF THE WORLD..IT IS ALL ABOUT THE SAME TAR/OIL FORMATION AS THE(KING)TAR SANDS.. WE NOW NEED AT WAY TO MAKE IT MORE LIQUID VS HUGE HOLES IN THE EARTH.. Bruce IN THE KING SAND FORMATION MOST OF THE OIL IS TOO HEAVY AND HAS BEEN TOO COOL TO FLOW..MOST IS NOT RECOVERABLE WITH OLDER SYSTEMS SO WE GOT AT BEST 10% OF THE TOTAL HYDROCARBONS. ( AT BEST)...

Israel? Interesting. All this talk of oil sands and shale oil makes me think back to all the hype around 2007-2008 (and prior) about "peak oil". 85MMbpd was the max rate the world would ever produce.... I think were almost up to 90MMbpd.

"I would be interested to learn what kind of damage this reclamation has done to the natural soil structure?" They re-use the natural soil. They scoop up the individual layers in one spot and use them in another spot that is being reclaimed. They do have to fertilize once because all the plant-life has been removed and it needs a jump start. They also plant millions of trees/plants, and even design the landscape to be in harmony with the surrounding areas (ex: water drainage, etc.) Moving soil from one place to another has nothing to do with soil structure except that they are destroying it! So they have killed all the activity that is natural in the soil & expect to renew it with some chemical fertilizer? It doesn't work that way. The soil microbes have to be re-established before the soil starts working and they need organic matter to feed on! Planting trees & plants is good BUT it would be a lot better if it was done naturally & not according to someone's idea of what "should" be.

IN ISRAEL THEY LET THE MAJOR RE-TREEING OF LAND THAT TREES WERE CUT A THOUSAND YEARS AGO PRODUCE NEW LIFE. MILLIONS OF TREES LATER WE HAVE PARKS AND A REBIRTH OF RAIN. WITH THAT KNOWLEDGE THEY CAN MINE THE OIL/TAR AND BE FOR THE FIRST TIME ENERGY INDEPENDENT AND EXPORT TO EUROPE A STABLE SUPPLY OF DIESEL. THE YEARS OF WORK IN CANADA WILL BE OF GREAT USE TO THEM AS THEY WILL NOT HAVE TO START A ZERO. Just a thought, Bruce

No, actually kadee what you are saying is exactly why it will take 40 years to certify it, and why such a small amount has been certified. Is it 100% natural? NO, but neither is any park in any city. Tthe point is that we are giving the earth new life. Working with it, and restoring it. A thank you for provding us with all of your resources mother earth. Which as investorrob points out, weltz proves with the link that she gave. So eventually over time. Long term it will be something the earth can work with. But in Nigeria... Canada, produces 4% of world Carbon. The oil sands are 0.3. The Saudis are at 11% and China?? Well, they have finally said they will publicly admit the size of the problem.. We are working on Carbon Capture for EOR. That would eliminate the need for chemicals in this process. Anywhere else doing these things? I know the Saudis are buying our tech to restore their oilfields(making Oil a semi-renewable resource) Every dollar spent on trying to stop the tar sands, is a dollar wasted in research into helping the process work better. Bruce you say the damage is deep down? Why then after 40 ys is land certified organic Also, ill bet those copper mines would love this persons invention. All he has to do is tweak the make up of the filter, and all the water would be drinking water.

Exactly, every dollar spent on protesting it, is a dollar wasted on better research on how to get it out. That tech would also drop the cost to produce tar sands oil to around $30 a barrel.

One of the interesting things I have seen was the open pit mine for copper that took a mountain and made a huge lake of copper water.. It is going to cause the super fund to spend over one billion dollars if the water level reaches the ground level.. but in the mean time it is drawing more and more purest "tree hugger" to see this "disaster". yes ..B.Braunii will grow well in oil filled water.. Just remove the algae and cook it to reclaim the water.. add salt and you have "Orange Water"... and you have more and more lakes at the top of what was a mountain.. now you have algae that eats the CO2.. Now how many will want to see the "Orange Water" as it is under stress..... by the way heavy oil sinks in pure water and only come to the top with you make it saturated brine!!.. IE salt out the oil!!!.. Great Idea... You mean this right.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algae_fuel

Couldn't agree more with you guys! It seems as the argument of the oil sands being the deadliest project on earth is over and the fact is that supporting Canada, your Friends and neighbors is WAYYY better than buying from some of the other available sources. I great point, from a smart man. A++, AND YOU ALMOST CAN NOT COVERT HEAVY OIL ( OIL-SAND) TO GASOLINE WITHOUT METHANE.. THAT I WHAT THE REFINERS TURN TO H2 FOR CRACKING OF THE HEAVY TO LIGHT ENOUGH HYDROCARBONS LIKE C8 ETC...TO MAKE GASOLINE.. ALONG WITH DRIP CONDENSATE FROM THE GAS OFF THE WELL HEADS.. IN WEST TEXAS WHEN I AS A BOY THEY USED TO BURN "WELL HEAD GAS" AS WASTE UNTIL TEXAS UTILITY STARTING USING IT TO MAKE ELECTRICITY FOR DALLAS!! Just a thought, Bruce one of the systems that makes methane is located about 100 miles into the center of the earth...so methane is also renewable..just look at all the seeps under the polar cap etc...

Sometimes reading is just better than sleeping. NATURAL GAS is changing all the rules. Just think about when cars run on it too? If the world still gets warmer after we get rid of most of our carbon foot print. Then what? We build villages on Greenland where the 1000 yr old ones are now? As far as the DFP ... the earth was destroying itself on que before me arrived.

... To continue on with how companies are the ones that are looking at solutions, not pipleline/environmental protesters, we can take a look at Huskey Energy.

I just love it when the obvious is stated... No proof of CO2 causing global warming: Greenpeace co-founderSo wait... Almost all of Canada was covered by an ice sheet at one time, and that melted because of warming temperatures? And even if we just look at the current industrial age, temperatures have only risen on the very low end of the scale? Even though carbon emissions have been higher than the levels that were supposed to leave us in a scorched earth scenario??... If only there was some kind of naturally occurring... plant....that could use this CO2!!
