By the way CME, provide your proof that this ISN'T so. The door swings both ways.
I have made no bold assertation. It is not up to me to disprove your belief but, for you to prove your statement.

Fact of the Day: Even on Less Than $15,000 per Year, 56% of 18-24 Year Olds claim to Have Smartphones ... fixed I don't see how far off the number could be. Why would they lie? It is not like there name is posted on the survey results and they won't be cool.

Mine is but I pay for it. Just me, not the taxpayers. Well, I guess, me, the taxpayer. It also notifies her if there's an issue on campus or a class canceled.

And she makes around 10k a year so she is in the right demographic.

Because of reading this thread I'm wondering whether I should drop my landline and DSL internet and go to a smart phone. I pay around $68/mo. but I am wondering how easy it is to apply on company websites, craft cover letters, etc. on a smart phone.
I have done job searches at libraries as well and the time limits were the biggest issue for me. Connection speed typically has been the same or sometimes better than what I have at home. Its the 1 to 4 hours max timelimit a day that hurts. Some involved website applications have taken me two hours to do at home. Does anyone here use their smart phone to apply for jobs? If so, how easy or hard do you find it to do? I think if it is not part of a family plan the cheapest smart phone with data runs around $65/mo. but maybe someone on here knows of something less.

None of that is very easy on a smart phone. If you already have a computer and cell phone, you could look into the cost of tethering - so that you are able to access a wireless signal on your computer from your phone. That probably isn't cheaper than a landline and basic DSL - but it could be cheaper than a landline + DSL + cell phone. I pay about $65 per month for unlimited talk/text/data, but the tether thing would cost me more.

I have made no bold assertation. It is not up to me to disprove your belief but, for you to prove your statement. You can't answer my request, because there is no practical way to answer such a question one way or the other. The data simply isn't there unless we fund a vast research project to determine who has the smartphones and why. I am sure some private company has done just that, spent a fortune to do so, and it is now proprietary information. Regrettably, assuming that people are generally reasonable and do things for purposes that make sense to them, doesn't carry the frisson of moral superiority. Duck, Dodge, Deflect.

I can see a smart phone IF you truly need it for work, absolutely required, can't work without it.
Other than that it's an expensive toy. Claiming it is necessary for work is a justification for the expense.

Sav. These days having a cell phone is a necessity.. I think some will go hungry rather than give up their cell! ;D No owning a cell phone is not a necessity. ne·ces·si·ty/nəˈsesətç/ Noun: 1.The fact of being required or indispensable: "the necessity for law and order". 2.Unavoidability: "the necessity of growing old". A cell phone is a want not a need. No matter how people try and frame the issue. want/wänt/ Verb: Have a desire to possess or do (something); wish for. Noun: A lack or deficiency of something: "houses in want of repair". Synonyms: verb. wish - desire - require - need - will - lack - like noun. need - lack - necessity - deficiency - poverty - shortage For those who wish to spend the money I have no problem (either the ones who spend personal money or those who spend governmental money) but to try and cage the conversation as people need them to exist is foolhardy at best, disingenuous at worst.

Why wouldn't "low income" people have a phone? Are they never supposed to be anything but "low income?" Why would you imagine that "low income" people live in a different world than anyone else? A world where employers comb the streets looking for them? A world where jobs materialize without the normal process of contacting employers via phone and email? A world called Rock Candy Mountain where the friendly storekeeper takes messages? For Pete's sake. Stop watching Black and White Movies. The 1940s are over. Its not about having a cell as much as having cell phone that costs more money to purchase and to keep running than is necessary. Understand?

Than you have determined sitting in your own little world is necessary for other human beings who you have no idea of their life circumstance. Understand?

We have them all and it's funny how they almost instantly seem like a necessity. I personally could care less who has a smart phone or what their income level is just as long as I'm not paying for it somehow! I also still think Apple should give up and make their products more useful by making them compatible with more PC software.

Fortunately, thanks to taxpayers, the poor neither go hungry or without cell phones.

Is it just me or does that truck scream "douche"? True, that one is unsuitable for my purposes, but I did say 'along the lines of...' That was just a pic of a big truck I found quickly. Mudding is one of the 'redneck games' this Yankee actually enjoys.

You have no reason to assume the taxpayers are paying for anything based merely on the "low income" designation. Plenty of low income people are working poor who get little or nothing from Uncle Sugar or youth new to the job market getting help from parents instead. I think if you are so certain "low income" is a gas, you should welcome the opportunity to experience it first hand. As for me, I'll take every dollar I can get and gladly skip Uncle Sugar's goodies. This coming from the Queen of Assumptions telling someone they shouldn't make assumptions is FUNNY

Thank you CME, I will always treasure your sterling logic and your refusal to stoop to personal attacks. You are a true prince. I wish you everything you so richly deserve. What personal attack TT? I asked for direct proof of your assertation earlier of which all you have done is duck dodge and deflect, your assumption in this thread alone is not based on any fact. You madam are the Queen of Assumptions, when asked to back up any assertation that you state as known fact you come back with multiple personal stories that involbve distant relatives or neighbors never once using fact.

If a kid is going to school then a smartphone isn't necessary because he can use the computer labs at school. Maybe a prepaid dumb phone for job hunting, but nothing more. If a kid is living in a place where he has access to a computer with internet, then a smartphone isn't necessary because he can use the internet at home.
What I'm talking about here is someone who is living in an unstable situation, moving from place to place, with a string of untrustworthy roomates. This is a very specific living situaion that doesn't necessairly match the living situation of the majority of those making $15k or less live.
I lived for years on less than $15k, but I never had the kid of roomates that would steal my laptop, nor did I ever live in an area where breakins were common, and since I was in school the whole time, I had access to computers at school. But I did know people who were living in bad areas with with untrustworthy roomates and didn't have access to school computers. They saved hundreds a month by living this way. Had smartphones been around then, it would have been a good investment.

Imagine trying to herd 12 fuzzy kittens up hill and into a small box without using your hands and with no other help. That is what this thread reminds me of.

I remember when my dad got one of these in the mid 80s, I thought it was so avant-garde, so futuristic, so James Bondish. Looking back I have to laugh. It practically had its own briefcase to lug it around. Technology has certainly moved, and is moving, fast. And the next big thing...In a year from now we'll all be wearing a pair of google HUD glasses. It’s about time: By the end of 2012, Google will launch a pair of Android-powered, augmented reality, heads-up display (HUD) glasses that will have 3G or 4G connectivity, a forward-facing camera, GPS, and a full array of movement sensors. They will cost “around the price of current smartphones.” Just imagine, a year from now people will actually be walking around with both bluetooth earpieces and terminator vision glasses making our race look more like cyborgs than ever before.
Unlike Google’s upcoming home entertainment system, a pair of wearable Google Glasses makes an awful lot of sense. Google’s arsenal of real-time, mobile, location-aware services is second to none; Search, Latitude, Goggles(!), Maps, Places/Hotpot, Navigation, AdSense, Transit, Wallet, Offers, Product Search, Translate, Voice, Music — each and every one of them could be built into a pair of Android-based spectacles, and boy would the end result be awesome. In terms of necessities, the only real necessities most humans need are air, water, 1500 or so calories a day and shelter from the storm. But what would life be without its little frills.

I can see it now: Right into the nearest lightpole, down the open manhole cover or right in front of the truck. Remember the surgeon to the stars who twittered right off the cliff? Cell phones and Darwin...it makes sense.
