Steph a friend of mine just completed a half marathon yesterday too. How exciting. I am just hopeing to be able to run a 5k. 1 mile at a time...right? That's how I started - couch to 5k. Run 30 seconds, walk 30 seconds, etc. It is a slow build-up over time!

I ran it in 2:14:36. I was consistent at at 9:30 pace through mile 9, when I got the injury (which I believe was my IT band - pain is gone now). My last 4 miles were 10:30-11:30. My goal was 2:15 so I made it under that, but I feel I could have been under 2:10 if I didn't hurt myself! I really do need to stop saying I am going to start out slow and actually do it! I have another half on Saturday. I am not planning on racing that one too hard - I already had a 12 mile training run planned so figured I would just do 13.1 and get a shirt! ;D

That's a good time, Steph. I'll need to see how some of my longer training runs go before figuring out what I'd like my goal to be. And LMAO on doing the extra mileage and getting a shirt! Might as well... If I recall, Steph, you're working towards a full marathon, aren't you? Have you already signed up for one? Yep, I have already signed up for the Walt Disney World Marathon in January! Eek! But seriously, if it wasn't for my leg pain, I could have pressed on for a few more miles, so the endurance is getting there! I am following Hal Higdon's Novice 2 marathon training plan. I like his plans. Right now I am running 4 times a week, which is good for me. Some weeks I like to run 5 times, but I don't want it to be required for my training.

You ladies are awesome with your running.
I will probably be running 3 days a week. Right now it is just a mile each time...but hopefully soon I can add to it.

the 1/2 is tomorrow morning. We are supposed to have record cold, around 21 in the morning. Chilly, but better than being too warm.

Another half-marathon today! I just used it as a training run (so I could get a free shirt). Ran 2:20:05 - 6 minutes slower than last week, but no knee problems and no walking besides drinking water during the water stops! Pace was about marathon pace + 30 seconds, which is what I was aiming for.
Plus my last 3 miles were faster than the others. Felt great. Hips started to hurt a little around mile 9 but was able to push through. I think I just need to start adding miles to my workouts so the hips get stronger. Legs felt fine.

What a beautiful day for a run. A little cool, but sunny and nice. According to my watch I ran a 1:48:33, which is 5 seconds faster than my time last year! New PR!
Now, time to drink beer and eat.
Nice job, Steph!

I finally made it back to the gym! I managed to get 20 mins of running in. Hopefully with the cooler weather I'll be able to build my stamina back up. They are opening a branch of my gym close to my house so I'm excited for that.

Awesome job MM. Getting the refueling thing down is hard work! I use the Jelly Belly Sport Beans and try to have a pack every 5 miles or so. I usually eat half before a water stop, then drink, eat the rest, drink, and continue on my way. I don't mind walking through the water stops too much at races. If I continue to run and drink, I always spill half down myself and end up gulping a whole bunch of air and upsetting my stomach!

So as I was about to get back into it I got some respiratory crap that I cannot seem to kick! At this rate the gym closest to my house will be open.

WVW, sorry you are so ill. Checking in with a status update since I've been MIA: As of this AM, I am down 33 pounds since January 2. I am still low carbing it at 1200 calories/20 carbs max daily. I'm up to 30 minutes on the treadmill, and have been hitting the weights pretty hard. My upper arms are changing. ;D

Training isn't too bad (yet) - 14 miles tomorrow! You can do it, MM! My first race ever was a 10k after running for only about 3 months and taking 3 weeks off for a European vacation right before the race, and I still ran mine at a 9:44 pace (1:00:20 - so pissed that I was so close to being under an hour and I didn't make it!). And if a slow poke like me can do that, you can definitely do yours at 9mm pace! Just start out slow and pace yourself well!

My update is dismal. I have turned pudgy from playing 18-holes of golf 3 times a week plus gym visits to sitting around with minimal exercise for 3 weeks. I try to get back in the swing of things again and end up with another 10 days sitting around and eating high calorie stuff.
I am working my way back up to my pre sit around gym training. The older I get, the slower this process is. I am recording calories and food intake.
What I noticed is - someone else's home and town are not nearly as convenient for exercise. Subway is probably the best fast food nutrition but a person can eat only so much of that.
An unsettled schedule for eating and sleeping increases the likelihood of eating incorrect foods in increased quantities.

Update; things were pretty tough for around half the year. Now they've improved quite a lot. There was a lot of illness in my family and though some still is it's now centred around my father-in-law who's in his eighties so it's not the same as when it was my brother who was ill!

Biglin, I can relate. (eta) Exercise because they cannot.
I am trying something old again. Long before time began, I read an article where the cover model had won the weight reduction contest and got a TV contract. One method she used was wearing a tight belt around her waist.
Yesterday, Day 1 - I found a stretchy belt and put it on.
This is Day 2 and I am reminded every second of my retained pudgies. I have reduced my food intake. I switched from the stretchy belt because there wasn't enough tension. I am using a leather belt with buckle holes.
If this belt works for today and I get cinched to the last hole, I am switching to a woven belt where I can cinch it in tighter everyday.
I need to figure out a belt to wear while exercising that will pinch it in. The woven belt could be a fashion statement on abs days. I do have a weight training belt that I can wear on weight training day.
Precor and bike have become a challenge to motivate.

I back to being a fat bloated cow. I haven't been running. Awhile back I twisted my knee or something..it just felt swollen every time I tried to run. UGH. So I took time off and now I am back to being a fat/bloated cow. It doesn't help that my 2 daughters have totally messed up my hormonal cycle. UGH.
I need to get back to the gym. It has been cold and rainy outside and I do not like running in the cold and rain. I can run on the treedmill or work out on the elipitcal since that is easier on my knees.

I know the feeling, Imanangel. The latest from the snake oil doctors. Try drinking pineapple juice. That is supposed to relieve a bloated stomach. I love a heaping spoonful of crushed pineapple with these bad guys, 1 plop of cool whip, 1/4 cup coconut silk and 1/4 cup grapenuts. Breakfast and snack.

Belt experiment Day 3. I did eat reasonably yesterday and came down about 1 to 1 1/2 lbs. I have a hard time reading my scale in the morning.
I switched to the woven belt and have tightened it twice this afternoon. I could hear the teasing so I didn't wear it for exercise. I do see the merit of that when I think of the ab and midsection during a situp or crunch.
The noon meal looked more like a snack with jerky and coconut milk because of shopping. Snack looked like lunch. Dinner is ?. I REEAALLY want a hamburger.

Nice job MM. Don't be too worried about the raw numbers. The great thing is the run itself. And just get faster for next time!

way to go MM
i did my south mountain 10 mile on sunday....it sucked like i knew it would. 1:42:34. just over 8 min slower than my last 10 mile race but that course was flat, in warmer weather and i had trained for it. i did NOT train for this one, so i can't complain, though i did almost cry when we had a mile left to go and i could see where we finished and i could feel my legs giving out on me.
and i couldn't hunt yesterday because i could barely walk.

17 mile run today - it's the end of week 10 out of my 18 week training plan. My next long runs are 18/13/19/12/20/12 before tapering for my marathon. Had some knee pain the last three miles today, had to run/walk those. But feeling pretty good as the mileage keeps increasing!

Ratchets, nice work. Keep it up.
Steph, 17 is pretty good. Bet you can't wait for your 20!!
I signed up for a marathon at the end of march. A friend and I are starting a 24 week training plan in mid December.

My work out is pale compared to your running.
I have a new exercise CD and have been trying to build up to do the entire hour. I don't know where my endurance went; or maybe, it's because of new exercise sequence. My DVD player quit so I got a portable battery operated one early this past week. I plan on taking it with me to the fitness center and doing the ab segment.
I have continued with the tight belt or waist band. So far, I cannot tell if I have cut down on eating. I have noticed my pant legs are looser.
I can still get into my xc ski overpants that I've had for 20 years. I consider that a victory. My usual mantras are - at my age, any exercise time is great. At this point, I can only do so much.
