Or they can walk 5 feet off campus to the nearest stop&shop and buy a bottle of water. Not quite sure what campus you're talking about but most of the time, 5 feet won't even get you to the sidewalk. Campus size at USF, here in Tampa, is 1,567 acres.

And I suspect that at every edge there is a place to buy things that are not available on campus - water, beer, strippers, etc.

Changing the subject away from water - and onto bottles.
About 5 years ago, I bought 4 water bottles, one for each person in our family. Since then, there has been a ridiculous proliferation of bottles. We bought the metal bottles before everyone had them. I would say that we now have 12 metal bottles and 15 plastic bottles - not including the ones my husband bought special for cycling.
After we went to a street fair and got 3 new bottle give-away bottles, my husband asked "Do you think that the manufacturing of the gazillion promo bottles has now trumped the environmental benefit of everyone owning a water bottle?" Any of the reusables appear to have a longer half-life than disposables.

Depending on where you are on campus, I'm sure it could be sort of tough to get to them edges though if you only have a 15-20 minute break between classes. I'd be the majority 'dying from thirst' will just grab a bottle of coke rather than make a 'water run' half way across campus. I really don't give a rats behind what they ban for sale on their campus. I just can't understand why they target 'bottled water'. I think it's a pretty dumb-assed cause to champion. You'd think people would have more noble causes to spend their time on.

Think of the enviroment man, I mean you gonna put that bottle up to your lips for what like a total of 6 minutes and then BLAMO the next 1000 1000 years it's gonna be like, always in the earth man, it ain't never gonna degrade, just sit there man, just. sit. there.

It's funny that wherever you find bastions of liberalism, you find people trying to micromanage your life who are deathly afraid that conservatives want to micromanage their lives... I love the conservative argument about regulation. When the federal government does something they argue it should be up to the states. When the state government does something they argue it should be up to the local government. When the local government does something they argue it should be up to the private organizations. When the private organizations do something they argue it should be up to the individual. When the individual does something they argue it is up to God and you are going to hell.

Call me crazy, but I sort of figured placing recycling bins around campus right next to the trash bins would take care of the environmental issues.
The water filtering units in our office / warehouse (sort of like the typical office water cooler without the huge bottle of water on top) always have waxy paper disposable cone shaped cups that get dropped right in the garbage can when the person is done.

I'm not sure what arch was going for there. But, it might have been a good strategy.
I agree that this will bolster soda sales and make everyone fat. Just what the next generation needs!

I did plenty of research and I know you are right some are tap water. One word FIJI. Just so you know Fluoride is a poison. Ha. Indeed it is, if you get enough of it. I'm pretty sure you would die of water intoxication before you would get that much fluoride from tap water. You should know that there is BPA in the dental composite they will use to fix your teeth when they all rot due to lack of fluoride. Everything is dangerous if you google it hard enough. I don't use fluoride for my teeth and it isn't necessary. I use tea tree oil and neem, which are known to help irritated gum issues that most generic toothpaste can cause.

Plastic leaching into the water you drink is a source of some very nasty chemicals, including some known to feminize men. There is every reason to drink out of that "nasty" declass, water tap whenever possible. So, the FDA took the time to protect us from the evil vitamin B6 and yet they have not even addressed the nasty, dangerous water bottle? IMHO, the 'dangers' of the plastic water bottle are over hyped. Besides, a good majority of reusable water bottles are.....plastic!

That is true, but even using the plastic bottles is an improvement over bottled water. The bottled water sits in the plastic for days and weeks, while the plastic water bottle can be filled from a tap and immediately consumed. That exposes one to far less resin. Also, metal bottles are readily available, often for free, and glass bottles used for juices and the like are also easily found and free also. Metal thermoses are another possibility. Then you have all them mystery materials in the metal water bottles.....and, of course, you may lose your tongue. Six-year-old Mary Kate Person is home recovering after spending 4 days in the hospital. She says it all started Friday at lunch. She was drinking out of an aluminum water bottle.
"I was drinking water and then it just got stuck on my tongue," Person said.
Her father admits when he was told what happened, it seemed funny at first. But when he saw his little girl at the hospital, it quickly turned serious.
"She was in a lot of pain and she was really scared and there was no way. It wasn't coming off," Andy Person said.
Doctors at Paoli Hospital cut off the end of bottle and realized exactly what they were dealing with: Mary Kate's tongue was severely swollen and it had the potential of cutting off her airway. She was flown by helicopter to A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children' in Wilmington. abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/special_reports&id=7748011

Actually, they use skateboards to get across campus, which is pretty funny to see.

Glass with well softened well water with a filter on the faucet= best for me.

I can see the trash issue with plastic bottles but do not find all the issues with the plastic in water bottles. They in fact are not plastic as we think of it. Most are made by Nalge corp. specialists in making polymer lab ware. Keep in mind that just because it may be called plastic all plastics are not created equal. Ever looked into what is in many of the other bottled drinks you buy including beer. And you are worried about water in polymer bottles? Really? Oh by the way by FDA rule bottled water may have minute traces of Floride in it. Geez I should not have mentioned Beer. My bad. Next the Universities will be banning that.

I don't buy bottled wat. I DO use a refillable bottle. I'm not so much worried about stuff in the water or PBAs as I am CHEAP!!! Also, I so think the college just might be right here. 6-10,000 students x 2 bottles/day = in trash pick up & land fill costs. Bet they saved that $20,000 for hydration stations in a single month.

You're assuming that everyone currently drinking bottled water will start using a "filling station." I'm sure that some will, but some will also just bring in their own bottled water or just buy a soda. The waste hauling cost difference will likely be negligible.
