I need my car. Public transportation here is not very good and I work odd hours. The buses start running at 6am and some mornings I need to be to work at 5 or before. Normal work start time is 6:30am and with the way the buses work it would be at least an hour commute for the 12 miles to work across town.
Right now we have even borrowed a truck from my dad so DD has wheels at the moment. Actually I'm driving the truck and she is driving my car. The truck is a Ford F-350 long bed with extended cab. I need to give a two week notice if I am going to turn a corner.
DD has been going to school early to get help with classes and staying late for play practice and with the weird hours I work we have needed two cars for the last 2 weeks.

No -- DH works 1/2 an hour away, no public transportation between. We have cut down to one car by manipulating our schedules.

I just tried it out... and because of my work schedule (I have to be at work at 5:15am) it wouldn't be possible because the buses don't run that early. The earliest i would get to work would be 6 something.
I could take the bus home from work though, and it would cost me $15 a week (I'd have to change buses once so it would cost me $3.00 from work to home in total, but i'd have very little walking which would be nice). It would take about an hour and 20 mins instead of the normal 15-20 mins.
But this may mean that my future hubby and I could get by with only one car, which is something we may have to consider. My fiance has a really old car, and if we can't get it to pass California smog, it won't be coming here when he moves to california.
If he was willing to get up at the crack of dawn with me and drive me to work, I could take the bus home and that would free up the car for him to use if he gets a job that doesn't work with public transportation. We wouldn't save on gas since he'd still drive home and then to his job in the same car.
The bus would save us about $50 a month to insure his current car ... and at $15 dollars a week for bus rides we'd be in the hole the bus would cost us $60 for 4 weeks, or $55 for a 30 day pass... so either way, we are in the hole $5 since we'd have to put gas in the one car and keep insurance and stuff on it.
but it does mean if we can't have him take his car from Utah to California that we could theoretically get by with just the one car.

As long as I am able I will have a car. If I lived in a city with good/great public transit similar to Europe I might consider being 'car free' but for now I'm glad I have a car.

We live in suburbia and although there's a bus system it doesn't get used a lot. They're usually empty. I suspect that most of the routes are in and out of nearby KC and for anything else you have to transfer a couple of times. I've never seen a bus go near my office.
So, living without a car is out of the question. Since DH is semi-retired, though, we get by pretty well with only one car. He drives me to and from work and I work from home 1 or 2 days a week. Having only one car saves us a lot of money and grief.

I also use my car for a lot of my travelling. To go see my parents costs me about $250 in gas compared to a minimum of $600 to fly. When I take people with me we are saving significant money.

Funny, I was in an appt this morning and we were talking about could we do without a car or not.....when I was growing up my grandmother walked all over town, plus took the bus all over. I am so spoiled I could not imagine that. Is that not so sad??

DH and I had only one car when we bought our first house. We sold one car to qualify for the mortgage. I worked downtown and would have had to pay for parking, so he dropped me off and picked me up. I Often waited quite awhile in the eve for him to pick me up.
Our lives are much busier at this point in time. DS and I have had to share a car several times in the last 2 months. It is not for me. I actually am questioning if we should get another beater--winter car.

I share a car with my DF and over the last 1.5 year we have only needed to rent a car twice, and once the car was in the shop. I take the bus/train and we plan when each of us needs the car. It can be a pain sometimes but it saves us so much money, cannot see going back to two cars.

No way. I live in a small town. Work is only about 7 minutes away, by car, but I sure wouldn't want to walk it twice a day and there is no public transportation to speak of.
Everyplace else I go is even further away so no I have to have a vehicle.

i live in chicago and take public transit everyday. i've lived in the city for 5 years, and only just bought a car last year. if we didn't have a dog then we probably wouldn't have bought one.
