"Mr. vandal (see Reply 6), as another example, has firmly expressed his support for abortion as birth control to prevent Malthusian unpleasantness. In sir's mind, India, Mexico, and other nations with greater-than-self-sustaining birth rates will shortly grow to sizes that will only be kept in check by starvation, disease, and other Malthusian factors. It is therefore not only necessary but preferable that couples in these nations abort their children by the hundreds of millions rather than subject them to (what sir believes will be) imminent suffering." ______________________________________________________________________________ I am flattered, Virgil! That is exactly how I envision the future. Good to know that someone was listening! I almost dare ask "Are you looking forward to it?"

"SF chose the article because the murderer's immediate reason for killing his mother and sister was to "save the Earth". In that moment, the murderer completely and utterly disregarded his family's humanity in pursuit of an environmental ideal."
What was Jared Lee Loughner's ideal is slaughtering six people and wounding 13? Was it Democrats are destroying the country?
What was George Hennard's ideal when he slaughtered 23 people and injured 20 more at the Killeen Texas McDonalds? Was it Vegetarianism?
What was Seung-Hui Cho's ideal when he slaughtered 32 people and wounded 25 others? Was it Education?
How about these folks are simply mentally ill.

I thought about that, and at least it's an anecdote that helps explain why there are so many just plain crazy people out there. That explains a lot... Or, maybe we do have a least on large mental institution left...

That's usually what causes a person to "completely and utterly disregard his family's humanity" when pursuing his ideals.

My BIL's friend went to jail for eco-terrorism. He tried to blow something up. BIL thinks his friends' research into how to create the perfect vegan marshmallow radicalized him.

I get the feeling that people have no idea what Schizophrenia is. It is a real, major mental disorder. It is not a "split personality" or "multiple personality" ala Sybil. It is a real, quantifiable problem characterized primarily by florid hallucinations. Well, yeah- and Sybil was a complete and total fraud. But you don't have to take my word for it. Take hers... www.salon.com/2011/10/16/sybil_exposed_memory_lies_and_therapy/

One of Obama's friends went to jail for terrorism too... Oh I forgot we aren't supposed to talk about that.

Paul, so far as the "Sybil" reference, I brought it up because many people think "Schizophrenia" equals "multiple personality." As noted, "Schizophrenia" is a well-established diagnosis, multiple personality less so. Multiple personality disorder isn't even considered a psychosis. It's a neurosis. But you're right....most people immediately equate it with schizophrenia.

Sad to say, I have met people who were diagnosed with Schizophrenia and were taking drugs for it. I have not seen the real, untreated thing, but the flat affect of people taking the drugs is scary enough. -------------- Mon Dieu, some of it was beyond belief! The strangest thing I saw was "waxy flexibility" in catatonic schizophrenia.

That is very interesting. When I first heard of "multiple personality" years ago, I had heard that these were adaptations created during a fugue state. But, this "diagnosis" has been so often misused such as when hypnosis creates false, "recovered memories." As things stand right now, I was not even sure whether this "diagnosis" was even recognized as legitimate. Sad to say, I have met people who were diagnosed with Schizophrenia and were taking drugs for it. I have not seen the real, untreated thing, but the flat affect of people taking the drugs is scary enough. I've seen it, it's not pretty.

I've seen it too:-.....hearing multiple voices, thinking the TV is talking to them, paranoia, delusion...sometimes visual hallucination, confused...non functioning, vulnerable and completely cut off from reality. Its surprisingly common 1/100 will have it at some point in their life....and very few are dangerous.
Its very distressing for the people and their families....Sure it isn't pretty but it can be controlled.
Anyone without treatment would be in a bit of a state I would think.
