Damn right. It's one of the stupidest things I've heard, and I make no apologies for pointing it out. I must say, you have some pretty selective hearing then.

If elected President, I promise the following: 1. Return of the Smite Button 2. Free air conditioning for everyone 3. I shall abolish fleas, mosquitoes, cockroaches and gnats 4. Television commercials should be limited to one every 15 minutes of show, and no turning the sound up. 5. Every American will be given the power to issue traffic tickets to people previously designated as idiot drivers. 6. Fast Food restaurant food will be required to look just like the photograph advertisements 7. Airline seats will be made 1.5 times roomier. 8. Total revamping of the current tax system, with everyone voting for me getting a significant reduction over what everyone else pays 9. Free cable TV, including whatever nifty channels you want 10. Every year, you get to select a free household appliance from a nifty catalog Oh, and $2.00 per gallon gasoline! ;D How about a pony (if I promise to be really really good)?

Of all the political promises to make, this one would be rather easy to keep. I think if Americans knew the extent to which gasoline prices are kept artificially high by government, they'd flip out. Most people aren't even aware that your local gas station is being forced by government to keep gas prices high-- and that's before you even get to artificial supply choke points and taxes.

Molly the last candidate that promised all those things got the job, but he's now running from them, so I doubt if the voters that fell for it before will fall for it again. But you are sure free to give it a go.

"Of all the political promises to make, this one would be rather easy to keep" ----------------------------------- I beg to differ. Bachmann did not lay out a specific plan to drop prices on Tuesday. But her campaign website says that as president, she would ease restrictions on drilling and roll back federal regulations on the shale gas industry. While increased oil and gas drilling in the United States may create good-paying jobs, reduce reliance on foreign oil and lower the trade deficit, it would have little impact on gas and oil prices. Drill baby drill won't lower gas prices That's because the amount of extra oil that could be produced from more drilling in this country is tiny compared to what the country -- and the world -- consumes. Plus, any extra oil the United States did produce would likely be quickly offset by a cut in OPEC production. According to a 2009 study from the government's Energy Information Administration, opening up to drilling areas off the East Coast, West Coast and the west coast of Florida would yield an extra 500,000 barrels a day by 2030. The world currently consumes 89 million barrels a day, and by then would likely be using over 100 million barrels. After OPEC got done adjusting its production to reflect the increased American output, gas prices might drop a whopping three cents a gallon, the study said. www.stereokiller.com/boards/topic.cfm?topic_id=365135&forum_id=2&Topic_Title=Michelle%20Bachmann%20%3D%20%242%20Gas.&forum_title=General%20Crabbery&M=0&s=1&all=1

We have not built a new refinery in 35 years and counting. Are you opposed to drilling our own oil and building more refineries? No, I'm not. I think the US needs to be more self reliant in the energy field so we can tell OPEC to go pound salt. Or sand. Why do you think I'm opposed?

Ending the government price fixing schemes alone would lower gasoline prices overnight. Instead, when Wal-Mart wanted to sell gasoline for $1 a gallon, the government sued them and won. Basically, they would use gas as a loss-leader, but so what? If they can afford it, consumers want it, then let's do it.
The problem is that we have all these crazy theories that are unproven at best, discredited at worst that basically assume that Wal-Mart will put everyone else out of business, and then once they have a "monopoly" they could raise prices and "gouge" people.
No one ever takes into account that as soon as prices go up, they will invite competition. The "monopoly" game is never really won- unless it's a government monopoly.

While not as cheap as it once was, gas is not really all that expensive here yet. I actually like the idea that other parts of the world are pumping the oil that they control out of the ground now and that the US is leaving the oil we have control of "in storage". Maybe it will pay back future generations for a part of the selfishness of running up the debt that they will have to pay off.

However, the market is pricing in the Obama threats to basically put the hydrocarbon industry on a path to extinction while the fed prints money willy-nilly. The mere STATEMENT that we were changing course would result in $60 a barrel oil almost overnight.

I am, just as I would be against cutting down our forests if people decided to make the use 8"x10" wood studs a new building code. Oil is a natural resource, to drill it as fast as we can so we can burn it in cars/trucks getting 12-16 mpg is crazy. We can also reach energy independence by raising the mpg standard from where it is to 40 mpg and start putting similar standard in place to deal with trucks. When I turn on a Sunday football game and see advertisers advertising pickup trucks by the gas mileage they get instead of the engine power, then we'll be getting close to "needing" to drill more oil.

"Opening up drilling in Alaska and off the east and west coast, the Gulf, and on land, would accomplish this. Nothing complicated about what she has said." -------------------------------------------------------------- No, it wouldn't. It all goes on the global markets. Do you really think companies like Exxon will say "Oh! This oil is going to Americans? In that case, we'll sell it for less. I'm sure our shareholders will understand. They won't mind making less money." Seriously? Canada is swimming in oil. We've got oil coming out the wazoo. We're still paying a lot at the pump, because it goes on the global markets. What's so hard to understand about that? EXACTLY!

I had not heard her entire statement, so I thought she might have said something really off the wall, , , , , but , , , I have now watched the video. I'd like to know what is so far out? She said that less than three years ago when Obama took office, gasoline was $1.79 a gallon and today it is over $3.50 a gallon, and that under her presidency we would see gasoline under $2.00 a gallon again.
What's so far out? On the world stage, what has happened that the price of American gasoline has doubled in less than three years? Who else in the world has had such a spike in gasoline costs? What other consumer product has doubled in price in the same time frame?
Why is her statement so wild as to be classified ridiculous out of hand?

Romney campaigned hard there in 2007, for nothing. he learned that it was a waste of time and resources. Perry is going to actually be in for a fight. Romney has done this before.

I'm sure you could if you try real hard.
