Rush seems to think so...I guess the wind chill index would be part of the plot also...-----"They’re playing games with us on this heat wave, again. Even Drudge. Drudge getting sucked in here. Going to be 116 in Washington. No, it’s not. It’s gonna be like 100, maybe 99. A heat index, manufactured by the government to tell you what it feels like when you add the humidity in there. 116. When’s the last time the heat index was reported as an actual temperature? It hasn’t been, but it looks like they’re trying to get away with doing that now. 116. Drudge is just linking to other people reporting. He’s not saying it, I don’t want to misunderstand, but he’s linking to stories which say 116 degrees in Washington. No! It’s going to top out as 102, 103. It does this every year. We have this every year. There’s a heat dome over half the country, midwest is moving east. And it happens every summer. Every summer. If we want to cool things off, please, Al Gore, schedule a global warming conference, wherever, in Washington! Go there. You want that 103, 116 to get normal? It will, within an hour of Gore announcing that he’s going! Another ten degrees off when he shows up. Plus hail, and rain, and maybe some high winds to really cool people off! That’s all that has to happen." thinkprogress.org/green/2011/07/21/274859/limbaugh-the-killer-116-heat-index-is-manufactured-by-the-government/

So Rush is smart enough to know the definition of heat index, but stupid enough to believe that it is a govt. conspiracy rather than a number that measures what it claims to measure. Stupid govt telling us it is hot when it is hot.

Well, I am in DC and it is HOT AS HELL. The humidity is killer, it is hard to breathe and you are sweating by the time you get half a block.

Well, I am in DC and it is HOT AS HELL. ... That is clearly a better measurement system but with the First Amendment, the government can't use it.

DC Summers are always hot and very, very humid. July and August, the worst. Nothing really new. I don't even think that the temps we are having now broke any records.

Well I wouldn't call it a conspriacy- just more dramatic. 116 sounds way hotter than 103. I mean why say it "as hot as hell" when you have the chance to say "it's hotter than hell" thereby justifing everyones misery.
Meanwhile, in the Northwest, we'd kill for some sun. I'm so f'in sick of rain and clouds. But I'll keep it over the crap that you all have.

I'm so f'in sick of rain and clouds. But I'll keep it over the crap that you all have. Well on the news here, they say all of that to warn people about working out (I saw people jogging when I went out to lunch), leaving pets outside, those with respiratory ailments because of poor air quality and to look in on elderly people in your neighborhood, etc., you'd be surprised how many do not have AC that live in the District in the older apartments. Also advertised on most local radio station and their websites are areas where there are cooling centers. When I went to go pick up my prescription at the CVS, there were just people standing in the front of store just to cool off a bit. That's how we feel during the winter, can't wait for summer. At least here, we get to experience all of the seasons, so I'm not that upset about the heat. Rather be hot than freezing cold any day. But it is hot. The temp tomorrow is supposed to be 102, not sure of how hot it will feel with respect to the heat index.

I don't think it's a conspiracy ... I think it's plain, old fashioned "one upmanship." We're hot here. How hot are you? 104 degrees. Well, we're hotter ~ we're 109 degrees. But we have more humidity than you. So? That means we're hotter. No, it means you're wetter. Well, wet = hot. Not when it's snowing. Well, your winters are milder. Not if you count the wind chill. That doesn't change the temperature. Yes, it does. Wind = cold. ;D

El Nino. La Nina.
I'm still waiting for the "above average number of hurricanes" that the forecasters guessed we'd get this year.

I'm still waiting for the "above average number of hurricanes" that the forecasters guessed we'd get this year. I'm sure as hell not. Mention of a hurricane sends the idiots off on their "French toast run" (Eggs, milk, bread). Really...buy tons of eggs and milk and watch it all spoil when your power is out for a week.

Dang, and not to mention clearing all the peanut butter off the shelves I hate it when that happens!!! ETA: I also hate that the name of the city I live in is completely changed when a hurricane gets in the Gulf

Government conspiracy? Not so much. It sure seems like a good way for weather and news people to sensationalize the weather.

Not really,IMO..I find it helpful. Here in the Chicago area, 85 could be nice or it could be unbearable depending on the heat index.Same thing with the wind chill index.15 degrees is not bad unless there is a wind chill. It is nice to know before going out.

Ugonow, Agreed that it can be helpful, especially in the examples you mentioned. I know here in Kansas City, the temps have been around 99-100, and the news people keep mentioning the heat indexes, but when it comes down to it, it is just plain hot. I heard mention of heat indexes of 130 up in Iowa and Minnesota (still not sure how accurate that is?), but I would still hope people would be able to judge that it is really hot just from walking outside and it's not really a time for outdoor exertion. BTW, I'm clearly a weather wimp, but 15 is lousy to me wind chill or no wind chill!

Did anyone actually use the heat index number & try to play it off as the actual temperature? Rush seems to imply this, but I couldn't find any instances of anyone actually doing this. As long as they preface the number as it is the heat index, then I think it is perfectly acceptable to report this number.

Just for funzies, why does 100 degrees in Phoenix feel like less than 100 degrees, but 100 degrees in Chicago feel like 120 or more degrees? If you have a printer you might want to print this out and study it. You definitely want to pay attention to what the different shades of pink mean. If you had the right kind of resource material you could even determine why your automoble reacts differently to the heat index scale, but for you gun nuts there is a link to an introduction of how ammunition reacts to heat and humidity. www.r-p-r.co.uk/heat_index.htm

If I am correct about this it goes this way, They take the temprature and then calculate in the humidity factor that affects the way we feel heat. Humidity is actually a heat conductor. Same in the cold. it can be 20 below but very low humidity and it does not effect the body. Raise the humidity and it will feel colder and chill the body quicker.

I've never head a forecaster do that, and here in the midwest have heard the terms heat index and wind chill index used frequently in both summer and winter.
