My DH can't seem to drink more than 1 glass of water a day. I on the other hand drink about 15 because if I'm going to consume calories, I want them to be from food. That's more than my DH drinks. He argues that the first ingredient on the pop bottle is 'water' therefore he's drinking water.

Ditto. Unless it's alcohol or milk, I don't drink my calories. Ditto, except I hate milk. Thanks guys, good beer is the exception to that rule

DD is in a "I will only eat Gerber puffs or cheerios for dinner" phase the last week. I am trying not to freak out about it as best I can because she eats well at daycare and normally eats a healthy dinner. It's either a phase or due to teething, the puffs pretty much distingrate on contact and involve no chewing. They are at least "better" for her than chips or other snacky type foods. I am trying to go with it since she is eating good at daycare and hope she comes out of it eventually. I've read that you're supposed to look at how they eat over several days instead of concentrating on a single meal anyway (I think it's time for me to cancel some of those parenting magazine subscriptions....).

As for unhealthy foods, DS is a great eater at 1.5. We let him have a chip here and there etc, but the big thing is that we don't give him desert that often. What 18 mo old needs desert on a regular basis, right? Plus we were at a friends house for a BBQ 4 months ago and one of her other friends had her LO who is the same age as DS and that poor boy was 35 pounds and fat. Those parents fed that boy an entire piece of oreo cookie pie!! We have friends whose 19 month old is currently 36 pounds and he is big, but he isn't necessarily fat. This other little boy was fat and I felt so bad for him. Yes oreo cookie pie is awesome, but should your (at the time 14 month old) eat an entire piece? I was watching my kids at swim lessons the other day and there was a woman next to me with a 2yo. The 2yo ate an entire Hostess cherry pie while we watched the lesson. I couldn't believe it. My dd is 5 and just last week finally hit 30lbs. I cannot imagine a 19 month child weighing 36lbs. The parents' arms must be so strong!

At least they are cheerios, so she should have good cholesterol levels with as many as she has been eating.

She's really tall and really solid built. I'm having a really hard time carrying her. She probably weighed 30 lbs when she was 18 months old.

dramaQ, many kids go through that phase of "I-will-only-eat-this-and-nothing-else" between 1-4 years of age. Nothing to worry about. As you said, she eats well at the daycare and also eats a healthy dinner. I wouldn't fuss too much about it. DS went through a LONG phase of not wanting anything but fruits and cheese, between 18 months and 3 years of age. He LOVES fruit. Think 4 lbs of strawberries in 3 days, 12 apples in 2 days, 12 peaches in 3 days kind of love. But I was still freaking out because even though he was eating fruits and cheese which is very healthy, he wasn't eating what "I" wanted him to eat. Then the pediatrician told me to back off. Once in a while I would force him to eat some bread and pasta, but I had to control myself. I simmered but what can you do? Thankfully around 3 years old he started eating everything by himself. Now I can't cook enough and I can't buy enough food to feed that child. His butt is constantly in the refrigerator or the pantry, and he is a tall, skinny chap. Hang in there.

That must be one regular kid.
Although the cheese should help plug it up a little.

There was a survey a while back, and it showed that parents of obese kids didn't think their kids were obese. The article was considering the doctors as part of the problem. Why didn't the doctor say anything?

Did you tell him it's diureticYes, he is also not supposed to be drinking it due to being prone to kidney stones. You'd think passing one big enough that he nearly passed out would be enough to get him to stop drinking the crap. I can't make him stop, he's an adult . I make him buy it himself out of his fun money, I refuse to purchase it for him.

Oh just for the paranoid people out there ... there are no sex offenders registered within 5 miles of me. There are 4 registered within 10 miles of me. Now, there are people in my neighborhood I wouldn't want DS to spend time with, but he is not a registered sex offender.

I have never quite understood that. Caffeine, I assume. I just don't understand how it works. Does the diuretic overwhelm the water that you are intaking from the drink?

A diuretic makes you pee a lot. So if you are not taking in more water to make up what you are losing, you are constantly dehydrated. That's part of what killed my grandma. She was on several diuretics but wasn't drinking more water to compensate so she was dangerously dehydrated. In DH's case since he is prone to stones, he should be taking in the same amount of water as he does pop. So if he drinks a 16 oz bottle of pop, he should follow that with a 16 oz bottle of water to make sure his kidneys properly flush everything out. But he doesn't. Now he's got another stone and I am going to kill him if it costs another $20k to get rid of.

"So, how do you distinguish between them truly not liking something and just being picky and how do you deal with that??" I never stopped encouraging DD to try new foods, but I learned to listen when she said she didn't like something. If she ate something she 'didn't like', you were likely to see it again. She doesn't like beans in her chili. I still put them in there and she'd eat the chili and have a little mountain of beans on a plate where she'd carefully picked every bean out of her chili.

The notion that they will have to learn eventually or whatever is not the point. Yes, they will learn eventually, but that time will come when i deem it time and the time when i think they can handle an unforseen situation. Until then, no. That is all we can do, as parents.

Seriously Snerd? WOW! Mine are 6 and 3 and they play in the backyard(fenced) by themselves. If they are playing in the front yard, only DS, who is 6, is allowed to play alone. DD (3 years) can only play in the front yard under supervision. You don't think your 9 year old daughter can take care of herself? How will she even learn to take care of herself if she is never given a chance? No, I don't think a 9 yr old can take care of themselves. I do not allow her to walk anywhere alone. I may when she hits 12. It was easier with my boys because they are close in age and i feel more comfortable with 2 going places together. I don't even allow my daughter to play at the playground around the corner unless i am there. If she is going with a friend and her brothers and their friends, then i allow it. I don't think i am an overly protective parent either. I do allow my sons to walk alone through town and to friends and to the YMCA . I had more leeway for my older son who is physically more imposing and seemed more able to take care of himself. My younger son , he really wasn't until he hit about 12.

Yes. It really depends on your kid, your situation, etc. But, i don't think what i am doing is out there in the extreme. And, i am more protective of my daughter. Right or wrong. One time i let her go to children's bible study while i went to the women's group. She was in a different room with teacher and the kids. Our group decided to move to another room. When i came out of our study, my daughter was standing in the gym crying because she didn't know where i was. Her group time was over and i ASSUMED an adult was going to stay with the kids until the parents arrived. She knew i was in church but not where. Needless to say, i don't take her to anything anymore unless i know there is good supervision start to finish. That really upset me. Are you sure she wasn't freaked out from the Bible Thumping class?

I doubt it. I have been freakin' out my kids for years with Bible Thumping. I would think they would be completely immune by now. Maybe they were dancing with snakes.
