I'm feeling excited by my race progress. I love that both Discover's are applying the whole payment to the Balance Transfer that ends soonest. It's funny how a couple of months ago I was fretting over which one to focus on and most likely the Discover's will be almost gone by the time the promo rate expires so that makes it easy to focus on Citibank 26. The minimum payment on Citi 26 is $39 so I rounded it up to $40. I'm trying to find more wiggle room in the budget to get the citi 26 payments higher. The First Bank of Seahorse is doing well. DH and I have $2500 in CD's (5 Cd's for $500 each for 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months). We opened our first Money Market Account and have $2503.89 as our balance. Most of the MMA is our fund savings so we'd have a higher rate; we went from .05 to .75 so that is a nice increase in interest. Now that I have these two savings goals met I feel I can focus more on the debt paydown and it feels good to have the First Bank of Seahorse as a back up plan. DH and I are going on financial lock down for the month of September. I'm nervous and excited b/c it's been a while since we have stopped all unneccesary spending to get ourselves out of the habit of using the credit cards. At first I was really upset with myself knowing there will be another credit card debt race after this one is won but I'm feeling much better about it and I'm looking forward to getting this race done so we can hang up the credit card debt again and hoping to keep it that way!

I think I got maternity leave figured out! My sister is having a shower for us and work is throwing us a diaper shower. I've been getting our baby things out and cleaned/organized. We got a crib for $50 off our neighborhood FB site and we are just using DD's crib mattress since we converted her crib out to the full size bed (with a free mattress from my parents!). 2nd kids really are a lot cheaper We can't afford for me to be off through the end of the year like I had wanted, but I will get to take 9 weeks off plus a week & a half for Christmas, so that will be nice. December is very slow anyway so it's a good time to transition back to work and figure out the logistics of a pumping schedule. Apparently our new office location only has one "mother's room" out of 15 floors, which really isn't helpful when you consider all the women we have here trying to use it generally at the same time each day. Hoping I can find a conference room to use or work something else out. All that to say, I may not have an update for awhile. Things are up & down so much right now. I hope we can make it through November with everything still where it needs to be and can start again in January with really making progress on these debts. My last two leaves have set us back quite a bit but we are in a position to come through this one still in the black if we are careful!

Lulu: Sending prayers. Chalupabatman: welcome! My budget is the same, $500 a month for 4 people (including 2 teenage boys) all shopping (groceries, toiletries, cleaning supplies, eating out, clothes). I aim for $100/week and I used to have a little left for debt. This year has been awful, I canNOT stay in budget, it does have something to do with those bottomless pits (and their friends) rummaging thru my cabinets. Usually running $700 per month. I coupon, shop sales, garden, collect and freeze leftovers from friends gardens, and whatever else I can do to get food. Lisamomof4: the little one is 8! Oh my, I remember when she was a baby. Sorry the wedding was so stressful, hopefully DD and SIL were able to enjoy it. Chicg: ((hugs)) for Dexter. Speedchick: Thank you SO MUCH for the link. You have no idea how much this means to me right now. Sam: I hope your plan works!

I am so ready for this car loan to be gone. Between paying for the wedding (we're just past the 50% mark on that) and trying to save money for vacation (leaving in 15 days!) our budget is stretched tighter than it's been since "the bad old days." I'm trying to remind myself that we are doing okay, and there is money in the EF if we need it, but it's hard to let go of those "we're teetering on the brink of a big black hole of debt" feelings that used to keep me awake at night. It doesn't help that work has been positively INSANE for several months now and shows no signs of letting up any time soon. I so need this vacation and really, really hope that I can relax and enjoy our once-in-a-lifetime trip to Australia. The trip is entirely paid for, we have the cash stashed we anticipate needing and to pay off any CC charges once we get home, our travel documents are ready, we have our "travel wardrobes" assembled, new luggage purchased, arrangements made for airport drop off and pick up, etc. Youngest DD came over on Saturday and I walked her through our bill paying process since she is going to take care of a few bills that will come in while we are gone. I also wanted her to see where things were as she will be the one who will have to take charge of it all one day (hopefully not for many years ...). It was kind of entertaining to watch her trying to be grown up about it as she still believes deep down that her dad and I will be around forever and nothing will change that. Eldest DD is flying to Washington state in a couple of weeks to get all the financial stuff in order with her biological dad. She is his only child and his health is not very good so he wanted to make sure all the paperwork was in order so she would inherit whatever instead of his (third) ex-wife. Hearing all this inspired me to double-check all my documents and make sure they were up to date. Hope everyone is keeping cool in this miserable heat wave. I try not to complain since we've had a relatively mild summer until this hit, but it sure makes it hard to get out and do stuff - thank goodness for AC!!

Has anyone here actually worked with a Financial Advisor (fee based)? Is it worth the cost? I'm spreadsheet capable, what can they do for you specifically? When opening IRA's would it be better to just work with our credit union for free? If I pick an IRA on-line, how do I know they are legit? Any experience would be appreciated....If you don't want to posts here feel free to message me. Thanks!

crazylady - I am married to one, so that my affect my opinion I liken it to any other professional service that you hire out to be done. Sure, you can probably change your own breaks and oil, or you can pay someone who knows what they are doing to do it for you. The planners all have very specific training and will be able to let you know all of your options and what the pros/cons are of each. I would run from any that seem to be pushing one thing in particular, but most of the ones I know really do care about their clients and work to do what is in their client's best interest, since that's how you keep business and get referrals. Look for someone who's actually licensed (CFA) and go that route.

Hi Ladies! I have been MIA for awhile but am planning on updating the $50-$100K and $100K Lists updated this weekend! Get those updates in! If you would like an update on me personally please check out my blog. I am doing as good as can be expected. The divorce finalized last week. Things with my new BF are going great, but I feel have many, many sad times. I am happy with where things are going with him, but I still would not have picked for my life to go this way. When I said "I do" I meant it, for better or worse, forever. All I can do now is look forward to my future. BF booked us a trip to Laughlin for October and the only thing I have to cover is my gambling and possibly some food/shopping, rest is paid for my BF/Comps. YEAH! Looking forward to some time away and relaxation! He said he wants to take me ring shopping while we are there.....and while that is very exciting and I do see a future with him, I am obviously tentative.....I just got my teeth kicked in by XH. I don't want that to happen again. Trying to find a balance between being smart and protecting myself and living my life....... How I feel : Taking Chances/Being Stupid{ME}Living Scared/Hermit Life I am somewhere in the middle of that.....lol

Crazylady- I am impressed with your grocery budget with 2 teenagers! I have a 3 yr. old and 7 month old and we can not stay in budget, sigh. We had plenty of food in our freezer this month and we still could not do it.
It seems like we either do really well or the wheels fall off. We had several extra expenses creep up this month. I am disappointed that we could not throw more towards our credit cards, but luckily these things happened during an extra pay period to avoid adding to our CC balances. I will have another update next Tuesday.

OK I'm doing a priority check on our finances, because we should be getting a little windfall here in the next couple weeks (selling something) for about $2k. Plus I figure it will be easier to get this all figured out now before I get my bonus in December ($5kish) and the last couple years my parents have given a good chunk of money ($5k) at Christmas. So my top priority items: 1. Add $5k to our cash EF fund. This would take it up to 3 months expenses ($12k). This would handle anything around the house, medical deductibles and short term job loss. 2. $4kish Pay off car (It is more than that now, but this is a December goal, by then it will be $4k). Interest rate is like 7%. So it just needs to be gone. I'm paying $200 a month that could be designated else where 3. Add ~ $2k to our sink fund expenses. I would like this fund to be able to handle most things around the house and not to ever have to touch the EF. Things on my 2015 list of expenses: 1. ~$3000 for DN graduation. I'm pretty sure we can do it for $2k. But if we end up footing the bill for MIL too, I don't want to come up short. We would be flying from probably KC to Portland, OR. DH doesn't want to go, but we need to go. I think his sister would be devastated if we didn't show up. We looked at driving and we can't do it any cheaper driving without killing ourselves. 2. $2000 for preschool. It could be less than half that. DS will be done with preschool in May. DD is only 1.5, so we don't HAVE to start her next year. I would like to send her for 2 days because I think she will get bored, just her and DH around the house and this will give DH a chance to sort of have some time to himself for the first time in 5 years. 3. $1000 additional activities for kids - probably cold be cash flowed 4. $1000 additional trips/vacations - money for trips to my parents, weekend getaways. Most of this stuff we currently cash flow, so I wouldn't necessarily have to save for it from our windfalls 5. ROTH IRAs... I haven't contributed since DD was born. My before tax retirement contributions are from profit sharing with my company and the last couple years have been over 10%. So maybe look at 5% of my salary+average bonus to contribute as a realistic goal. That would be in the $3500-$4000 range. (Our current combined retirement savings is at $100k+) 6. Addition savings - we have a long term goal (5-10 years) of putting an addition onto our house just a rough guess at how much we need 400 sq ft X$100 sq/ft finished is $40k. I would like to have over half of that in cash in 5 years; so $4k a year. Now obviously, I can't do everything on my list even with windfall money. But I can get started. I think with $2k I would split $1k between the EF and the sinking fund (sinking fund handles things like propane and car insurance, I add to it every paycheck, but it isn't quite enough to handle everything). After that, I get fuzzy. Do I want to neglect the 2015 side of the list to make sure the top 3 are taken care of? Does it matter? I mean if I'm short on like DN graduation because I put the money in the EF, then the money would probably come out of the EF or sinking fund. If I pay off the car, I can send that $200 a month to handle preschool/kids expenses. I guess it doesn't matter, but I figured I would throw it all out here and see what others think. (Of course all of this goes out the window in case of a medical problem, BTDT too many times not to throw that out there).

muttleynfelix:
You say you'll have $7,000 for 2014. I would: Pay off car: -$4,000 Sink fund: -$l,000 DN grad: -$2,000 (because you need to book/pay for the airfare early in order to get a good fare at that time of year (June?))
Now you need $5,000 for 2015 (not counting retirement). With the car payment gone, you'll have an additional $2,400. That would definitely go to augmenting your EF. Now you're down to needing $2,600 which you should be able to save each month: less than $240 per month. This might free up some $$ to use toward retirement.
If your parents gift you another $5,000 for Christmas 2015, put: $2,000 sinking fund for 2016 $1,000 kids activities fund for 2016 $1,000 vacations to see grandparents in 2016 $1,000 emergency fund
Good luck!

Sam – Thank you, we have no goal and it bothers me. Ners – I’m holding on, hoping we resolve some things here and I can make some big leaps before year end.
Chalupabatman: It takes a lot of work to keep it that low, and good kids that will eat anything.
Bankergurl: I do check on your blog once in a while. It’s over, relax, and enjoy each day, where ever that takes your future. Muttleynfelix: For DN graduation - every year we price out flying vs driving the kids from the west coast. It’s usually near equal and when I add in the time off work flying always comes out ahead. However if you really do need a cheap option – check out Amtrack Train. Strapping kids in a seat for 4+days I figured was impossible though, so I priced in a Roomette and the savings was gone.

I was going to send the $96.04 to savings but decided since it was fairly easy saving up $2500 for my Cd's and then $2500 for the MMA that maybe since Citi 26 is $2580 that it might go away quickly. Starting next month whatever amount I don't need for the electric and gas bills will go towards paying Citi 26 off. Both the electricity and gas are now in the black in the household account and there is surplus for both of them. I think I am financially ready to start snowflaking again .

Here's my thoughts - The original $2K you are getting now should go to Graduation expenses. First $5K - Finish paying off car $4K. With the remainder I would put it towards Preschool. That is a semi-fixed expense that you know you will have to pay so I would be prepared for it. With the car payment freed up you can start adding that money to your EF or SF to get to the amount you feel comfortable having. Second $5K - Put $1K toward a vacation Put $1K to pre-school Put $2K into the Roth to make you feel better Put the rest into your activities line

UPDATE: Seahorse [2] 08/30/14 $9,244.75 (01/25/12 $56,511.37 MPT206, 237, 248, 268, 276) | 08/28/14 | 08/30/14 | | Debt | Previous | Current | Diff last | Discover DH | $1,423.23 | $1,423.23 | $0.00 | Citibank 26 | $2,483.96 | $2,405.52 | -$78.44 | Citibank 27 | $3,512.00 | $3,512.00 | $0.00 | Discover (Mine) | $1,904.00 | $1,904.00 | $0.00 | TOTAL | $9,323.19 | $9,244.75 | -$78.44 |
Pd since last time | ($78.44) | Total Amt Pd | $47,266.62 | Total % Pd | 83.64% |
I cleaned out the month ahead checking account. I realized it would be easier to just clean out the extra funds versus rotating them into October payments since I have all of the September payments made. Being too far ahead seems confusing to me. Plus this will reduce the amount to budget for the initial Citi 26 payment for next time. I'm excited to see how much I can chip away at citi 26 before the Sept 18th statement .

bankergurl, I read your blog.
Having been through something similar (but far more complicated due to kids and college expenses), I think that filing for divorce is an act of empowerment. Sad as it may seem, when you have been kicked around for long enough, filing the papers makes you feel that you CAN do something to save yourself instead of continuing to be victimized. Despite that, getting the final papers is a sad day. For me, it resurrected all the bad/sad memories.
With no kids involved, you don't have to worry about interacting with XH. It's a clean break in that respect.
Because our kids were older (youngest was still in high school), I decided that they could define their relationship with their father and I would no longer facilitate it. XH then realized that the relationship he had with his kids was pretty pathetic. He didn't remember their birthdays; they didn't remember his. They were also upset about the divorce and the reason for his leaving the family (another woman). They now have a very casual relationship with him: no holidays spent with him, very little interaction or communication with him. I think it's a cordial relationship, but not close.
I took a huge hit financially in the divorce. But the worst part is having to sit next to him at the kids' weddings, and listen to the officiant talk about lifelong love, commitment, honesty, fidelity, patience, etc. I wonder what he's thinking when he hears that. It makes me want to kick him in the a$$. Seriously.

Update
Serious this time [2]: 9/1/14 $5,732 (12/9/2012 $11,021 MPT 266)
Still plugging away. The first debt (of two) in this race is getting downright pretty looking. In a few short months it will be paid off, and I can concentrate on the rest of the debt in Race #2.
I just got back from a trip and had no choice but to put money on a card. I should also have a check waiting for me when I go through my mail tomorrow, so that will put a nice dent in the money I had to charge.

Hi Everyone! I haven't back read much of anything yet, I will work on that. So I apologize for not knowing what is going on in everyone's life. However, BankerGurl, I did read that the divorce has gone through & is finalized. I know that was a very painful time in your life, and I am so sorry you went through it. I can only hope for better things for you, and that you soon find peace in the decision to end the marriage. Good things will come your way when you open your door to them.
I just wanted to drop in and say HI! Cant remember when I was here last, which is terrible and probably tells you how my finances are going right now Needless to say, I've buried my head in the sand right alongside my DH, b/c its better to die with company, but I'm starting to think maybe its time to dig myself out before I get too deep. So I need to balance my checkbook properly, organize the paid bills which have been thrown in a heap for a few months or 5, figure the debt totals & come back here for some tough love or ass whooping as the case may be, then make a plan.

Hey, I've been a little MIA again. I'm absolutely swamped with work, and I feel like all my free time is spent at various pet stores. Dexter seems to be doing well, he gets bloodwork next week to see if his treatments are working. My fingers are crossed so tight that they are, I seem to have a huge black cloud that follows me throughout life but I'm doing all I can to learn about this disease and be very proactive. I've sourced some food and supplies online, saving over 50% of what the vet charges, so I'm doing my best to get him what he needs for the best price.
My finances are taking a big hit right now but that should be slowing down (with Dex at least). I'm doing pretty awesome with restraining on any extra spending. It's funny, I had to think about the last time I went shopping. Years ago I had such a problem with that. I realized I need some new work clothes, then realized how old some of my stuff is. My car window motor is busted, but that's a pricey fix so for now I can't roll them down. So embarrassing but whatever, it's just going to have to wait a few paydays.
Bankergurl, I haven't read your blog yet, just want to say not to be scared to take your time with your new boy. That's awesome you met someone so quickly and you're happy again, just be careful regarding any big life decisions for a little while. At the end of the day though, just keep making yourself happy, whatever that may be!
Shop - no one is going to give you an ass whooping! I think we all just know that when we bury our heads in the sand it means things are not well and we don't want to see our WIRR ladies get buried too deep. We've all been in DEEP holes with our money but we know how to crawl out! Financial situations ebb and flow. I was doing well, then crawling out, then BAM my cat got really sick. I've finally learned not to panic. A little worry keeps me on my toes but panic never helps. You'll be ok, just arm yourself with a plan.
that's all I can think of for now, I'll update my totals soon. Not very impressive, I'm holding back payments in the effort to buy supplies and such for my cat in cash. The vet appointment will be $300-400 since lbs are involved, ugh.

UPDATE Chicg [2]: 9/15/14 $2,645.75 (11/7/2012 $4,217.34 MPT266)
Ugh, my balance on my Chase card, which I used kind of like a short-term cc that I usually pay off right away, I don't like to keep a running balance on, is $2K. It's mostly from vet bills that I can't keep up with and a little "fun" spending but not much. I've been better about bringing food to work so that has helped a little bit. Because of all this I'm not going to be able to pay my BofA card in full when the BT ends, so I think I'm just going to keep paying down the Chase as aggressively as possible and do another BT when the BofA is nearing the end of the promo. I know this could all be worse, just a bummer that it won't all be a nice big $0 at the end of the year like intended. I'm not comfortable taking money out of savings right now so I'll just have to keep watching the budget.
(actually I've been getting a lot of offers, maybe I should just consolidate with a BT now? hmmm?)
I'm getting annoyed again listening to friends talk about spending money. I've learned not to compare and not to let it bug me, but lately it's been getting to me. I did sell a humidifier on craigslist and have some shoes listed, doing everything I can to get a few extra bucks and purge out some extra stuff.
