So, how much is too much-- or is any amount too much for government to take in taxes? an amount equal to what we spend would be a good start. the unfunded mandates of the Naughties would be a good place to start. This ignores the question. What is the highest percentage of any individual's income and/or wealth you think is acceptable?

The endless Biblical babble on this thread is getting really out of control. USA is not a Christian country. Morality is not defined by the Bible. On top of that, morality is a personal and not a public matter. Why don't adults understand that? I don't care what you use as your moral code. Those discussions were OT. What is assumed in this thread is this: 1. There is a widely accepted 'morality' of 'helping needy people' by transfering tax dollars to them. 2. The reality of an income tax and inheritance taxes Given the above, is there some point at which it becomes immoral to take more than a certain percentage?

So there's about 300 million Presidents of the United States? Any more absurdities you'd like to lay on us? Anything to win an argument, eh?
Well then, march to Washington and take it. Hey, while you're collecting your money, could you pick up a Fort Knox brick for me?

The endless Biblical babble on this thread is getting really out of control. USA is not a Christian country. Morality is not defined by the Bible. On top of that, morality is a personal and not a public matter. Why don't adults understand that? there are two types of morality: public and private. private morality is in regards to such things as sex, drug use, and other things that are not harming the person or property of a non-consenting other. public morality is such things as murder, property crime, and extortion. the latter is absolutely the domain of justice. the former, in a free society, is not. the problem with the religious right is that they can't seem to leave private morality alone.

the problem with the religious right is that they can't seem to leave private morality alone. Is it not a moral issue when the left tries to legislate "financial justice" and "fairness"? How about the whole health care care issue? It has nothing to do with the morality of whether or not we allow people to "die in the streets"? How about medicare/medicaid? Attempts to legislate morality is not simply a left / right issue. IMHO, any social engineering has roots extending into morality issues. Otherwise why would we care about the old, young, sick or defenseless? ETA: Took me a while, but I found a quote I heard quite a while back: It is not the business of government to make men virtuous or religious, or to preserve the fool from the consequences of his own folly. Government should be repressive no further than is necessary to secure liberty by protecting the equal rights of each from aggression on the part of others, and the moment governmental prohibitions extend beyond this line they are in danger of defeating the very ends they are intended to serve. – American Economist Henry George (1839-1897)
