It is a corrupt and unsustainable organization, unless just throwing billions a year at a program that has been a loser since the days of the pony express, is your idea of money well spent. I agree. This is a prime case of the Govt subsidizing costs for the poor and the middle class. This has to stop. Really only the poor and middle class use the post office? Seems that as I stated only junk mail makes up the majority of what hits my mail box, if corporations actually paid full postage price for the crap I throw in the trash, they wouldn't be facing billions in shortfalls each and every year.

The poor and the middle class will be the most affected from price hikes as they have the least disposable income. I do agree that increasing prices on junk mail would make me very happy, as then junk mail would simply disappear. But I can guarantee you that you won't like it, as then the revenues of the USPS will drop even more, losses will mount even more, and the calls to private USPS will just get louder. There is a natural price point for junk mail. You just can't screw around with that without taking a revenue hit.

So the alternative is to continue losing money in order to keep people employed? What sense does that make?
Problem is, the USPS is built on a model of low efficiency. The FedEx and the UPS do not come to your house, you go to them. The USPS however comes every day to pick up mail. The FedEx and the UPS doesn't serve low density areas at low cost (which incidentally are the conservative states). They make the people their pay through their nose, which is why USPS use is much higher in the rural conservative areas. So you have to keep lots of people employed to handle the low density areas, and you still can't charge them high rates as otherwise the entitled conservatives in those areas will scream bloody murder. So what do you do?

The reality is, there is no way for anyone - public or private - to make money while keeping the USPS service model and fee structure. Either you say that rural conservative communities won't be served, or will have to pay through their nose, or you say that the Govt subsidizes these communities through the USPS. There is no other way. If that was an attractive business for FedEx/UPS/DHL they would have gone after it already. They didn't. They went for the big juicy corporate mail, the overnighters.

Is it time to privatize USPS?
Yes. But it must be privatized according to the Obama Economic Doctrine.[/color] This will create millions of shovel ready jobs.

It is only appropriate that USPS become privatized, following the business models of such stalwarts of capitalism as AIG and General Motors.

Is it time to privatize USPS?
Why? Surely you don't think that there is some entity out there that could possibly manage something better than the U. S. Government? Let's just rename it "Obamamail". Oh & let's also open a branch post office in Moscow.

I don't know if it should be privatized, but I'm sure the efficiency and business model needs to be improved. That being said, I do like the Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes ... I send at least one a week to my wonderful DH when he's deployed, and that always necessitates a trip to the Post Office to deal with customs forms. Over the years, I've gotten quite close to the ladies in my local Post Office and they even gave me a holiday gift this last December since they knew my wonderful DH was gone.

Besides, aren't those nifty "forever stamps" a teeny tiny hedge against inflation?

That it probably will. No one can beat them in the 13 oz or under category, which is the bulk of our mail. They are pretty competitive on parcels also.
The poor and the middle class has no complaints when it comes to higher costs.
They were a monopoly for most of our countries history. They are by far the biggest mail carrier & package carrier. Nobody "should" be able to compete with them because of the tremendous cost saving that should be available to them because of size. Yet they are so poorly run that they lose money. WTF?

Does anyone know WHY they lose money? Is it labor and pension costs? The need to update and upgrade equipment?

I already told you why they lose money, because they have to serve the remote conservative areas with low population density at below market prices.

Does anyone know WHY they lose money? Is it labor and pension costs? The need to update and upgrade equipment? No and no. They lose money because the business model is invariably going to lose money, if it has to serve low population density areas at below market costs. Incidentally these areas tend to be in the conservative red states. The USPS would be profitable if for example it just had to serve the Eastern seaboard cities.

So it's Nebraska's fault? It's no one's fault. We need to subsidize poor people who live in remote areas. That's basically it.

Not enough business. With e-mail, the need to really send a letter has become almost obsolete, with on-line bill pay there is no need for a majority of people to send out a bill, with on line banking, the need to send paperstatements has been reduced. The post office is the only federal agency that is required to fully fund it's pension year after year, the cost of fuel has seen a steady increase, all of these are contributing factors as to why it's losing money.

So ... if we want to save the USPS, we need to boycott Nebraska, abolish the Postal Workers Union, outlaw emails, and prohibit online bill paying?

Most Republicans I know have two arms. And many are armed. And some are in the Army. Does that mean they are "up in arms?"

Wow, I knew labor rates were high, but 79% of operating cost is a wee bit much wouldn't you say!

Let's not destroy another group of American workers. Machines and Chinese don't pay American taxes, build American communities or keep people off the dole
It doesn't have to be destroyed it does need to have a budgetary review and stop bleeding money on a yearly basis. As more business find a way to make electronic business easier and faster, less and less need for the amount of postal workers we have, a parring down along with a price increase will need to be considered.
***** As I sat here typing out the final few words I started to laugh to my self, I realized we are talking about a GSE they much like the government have zero need to follow budgetary decisions, which is humorous in a very sad, sad way.
